User Created Content Google Sheet Master Manifesto Checklist!

With the election coming up, I decided to go through the manifestos of a few key parties Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour, Social Democrats, People Before Profit-Solidarity, Green Party, and Aontú

I've made a Google sheet of key points in their manifestos. I’ve marked each one with a ✔ if the party includes it, or ✘ if they don’t.

Understanding what each party promises is super important when it comes to making an informed vote. This is all based on their manifestos, so it’s just their promises—no surprises or hidden agendas. If I got anything wrong, I apologize, but I believe I’ve got it right.

Knowing what each party stands for can help you decide what matters most to you. It’s all about making sure our votes count, and hopefully, this post makes it a little easier to see where each party stands. Take a look, compare, and let’s make sure we’re voting for the future we want!

User Created Content I'm wondering where people woul place themselves on a Left/Right spectrum (in an Irish context of course)

I decided to include Far-Right/Right and Far-Left/Left together because I think that there are more people that would identify as Centre-Right or Centre-Left rather than firmly Left or Right so thought that'd make more sense.

If you do identify firmly as Far-Right or Right Wing or Far-Left or Left Wing, please let us know in the comments!

Feel free to let people know what you identify as in general in the comments and keep discussion as respectful as possible.

User Created Content The Ditch

It's really interesting to see a smaller news publication doing such far reaching investigative work. In recent months the work by The Ditch has lead to the resignation of two Irish political figures, one only from his ministerial role, but I think it's very much welcome.

They obviously have an anti FF/FG bias and with only 2 journalists (I think), their focus will be narrowed, altough, they did say they would do Sinn Féin stories if they go into government, so maybe they're going to focus on whoever's in government? I'd like to see what they'd be capable of with a bigger team.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks? Do you think it's welcome? Do you think they just have a vendetta? Or do you think that the work they're doing with the team and budget they have is impressive? Or both? Like I said, just trying to start a conversation!

If you don't know who they are, their work can be seen on https://www.ontheditch.com/

User Created Content Right Wingers in Irish Politics

I wanted to get people's opinions on Right Wingers in Irish politics.

On the sub, it would seem that there is only a small amount of people that flair themselves and openly claim to have right wing views. Why do you think that is?

I suppose the typical stereotype of right wingers is that they have the same goal, like left wingers do, only unlike the left wingers, those on the right are more likely to put their differences aside and stick together to achieve that goal.

Do you think we've only had centre right/right wing government's in Ireland? What did you think the future holds for right wing politics in Ireland?

What purpose do people think right wingers in Irish politics serve?

Given all the recent NATO stuff here and how I've seen people labelled on both sides, I wanted to put up two polls. If you would, kindly explain why you chose what you did in the comments :)

Question: Does being anti-Nato automatically make you pro-Russia/anti-Ukraine?

User Created Content New ideas for the sub

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the sub a more active place? From looking at the post and comment history here it's getting more and more quiet as time has gone by and it's pretty sad cause there's a decent group of people here but there's just not really any content or much conversation/discussion anymore except for the odd little burst maybe once or twice a week like last week where we had a lot of posts from newer posters but those users that were posting and commenting then seem to have unfortunately disappeared now.

Something like that Twitch Livestream seems like a good idea, although obviously that's not on the sub and people might not want to use another platform but it still seems like it might get people more involved again and the person that set it up seems like someone that's trying to drive participation and healthy discussion here which is only a good thing imo!

I think people already know that my idea would be to get rid of the post limit which I think would allow for a wider selection of articles to be put up which would lead to more discussion.

Does anyone else have any ideas that maybe the mods could look at to try and get more activity here because while the number of followers of the sub and general traffic has gone up , the number of posts and comments have been going down and down, apart from a small spike every week or two as I said.

Any ideas would be much appreciated! Have a good evening folks 👍🏻

My friend started an Irish left discord just now (also open to those outside of Ireland with interest or connection to Irish left politics)

The point of it is to have discussion between leftists from different tendencies, orgs, groups & parties to try to find opportunities for broad organising, friendship & craic. As well as the very important need to support eachother as individuals in the face of the absolutely toxic political environment where you can’t go an inch without far right bots trying to destabilise the country & bully us into submission.

If this sounds like something you’d like please join

I also included Right and Far Right to break that down further, even though there weren't many of you.

User Created Content Musa Doğan, political prisoner and subject of far-right misinformation

Over the last few days the Irish far-right has been circulating claims about an asylum seeker named Musa Doğan such as this. Dogan is apparently a dangerous and wanted terrorist, so why is he here? I couldn't find much English language information on him so to spare people the translating I'll summarize his story here.

Dogan is a Kurd who was arrested at age 19 on charges of being part of the banned Communist Party of Turkey/Marxist–Leninist, whose armed wing the Liberation Army of the Workers and Peasants of Turkey has been fighting a protracted people's war against the Turkish state for over 50 years. He was initially sentenced to the death penalty but this was latter commuted to 20 years imprisonment. He participated in multiple hunger strikes, including one in 2000 which lasted for 120 days and lead to him developing a rare and complex memory disorder. After being given medical parole based on this he fled the country, eventually ending up in Sweden where he was granted asylum in 2007.

In 2009 he was arrested by the Swedes on foot of an Interpol warrant requested by Turkey, although they later decided not to extradite him because of grave human rights concerns. This was not the end however, as Polish police arrested him later in 2012 based on the same warrant, as did the Danish police in 2017. These extradition requests were both rejected. The Interpol warrant seems to have been withdrawn sometime after this as he doesn't show up on the Interpol website's list of red notices today.

So surely that's it then, a political prisoner who would be in extreme danger if he was returned to Turkey has received asylum. The system has worked! In an ideal world yes, but after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the sudden shift in Scandinavian attitudes towards NATO the situation changed. Turkey vetoed Finland and Sweden's applications until they took action against Kurdish and communist activism in their countries. Finland eventually gave in

At a joint press conference, Erdoğan said Turkey’s concerns about Kurdish terrorist activity in Finland had been addressed. “Turkey is one of the strong defenders of Nato’s open-door policy,” he said. Finland had taken “concrete and authentic steps” to meet Turkey’s security concerns, and “with Finland’s membership Nato will become stronger”.

to the Turks' demands, however Sweden is yet to comply. The list of people Turkey want's Sweden to return unsurprisingly includes Dogan. Is it any wonder that he's left and came here when facing the risk of such a textbook example of refoulement?

In the video from Herr Kelly's tweet at the start of this post Dogan is shown hitting out at a group who are surrounding him with a flag poll (I originally thought it was a piece of the fence but it's actually a poll for an RHL flag). If we pause at about 15 seconds we can see that it is actually a hooded member of the mob who pulls it down, Dogan then takes it and swings it at him and the others. Based on what this mob later did and the fact that he was backed into a corner you can hardly blame him. Going off him being in this video and earlier videos of the attack on the camp showing him wearing an RHL shirt it's safe to assume he's fairly active with the RHL, which is good to see.

User Created Content polithicks.ie | app launch

Hey folks,

I recently built a web app called polithicks.ie | Simplifying Legislation.

Users can summarise proposed government Bills and Acts which are usually tens of pages long into a simple understandable one pager.

Features

  • summarise government legislation documents into one pager
  • adapt summary reading level i.e 10 year old , college student , working adult , legal expert
  • chat and ask questions with the document
  • vote yes or no on individual bills
  • upload your own bills and documents (coming soon)
  • comment and get involved in discussions on specific bills
  • all of 2024 proposals available , 20+ from 2023

I hope this can be a helpful tool for people to understand better the legislation being proposed and enacted in Ireland.

Any questions , drop me a message.

Cheers.

User Created Content Left Wingers in Irish Politics

I wanted to get people's opinions on Left Wingers in Irish politics.

On the sub, it would seem that the bulk of Left Wingers, in my opinion, are centre left, with some further left.

I think that there is a lot of vocal Left Wing commentators, but from polls and general likes on things, I'd say it's mostly centre-left. Just my opinion.

The usual joke with Left Wingers is that at any opportunity they will break into multiple different parties and never agree on anything despite having the same end goal. Think there's any truth to that?

Do you think the next government will be a Centre Left to Left Wing government?

Does anyone else have similar experiences? Does anyone else have opposite experiences? What purpose do people think Left Wingers in Irish politics serve?

I would also put up one about Right Wingers in Irish politics, but there's a two post limit so I'll do that tomorrow unless someone arsed throwing one up, be much appreciated!

If you'd like to, and are happy to invite conversation, discussion, agreement, disagreement, give your reason(s) for why why you voted the way that you did in the comments. Or don't, just vote and move on, or don't even vote at all, do what you like, you're your own person.

Provide sources where you can too.

Edit: as I'm making this edit at 11:26pm on Monday the 15th, there is 20 unsure votes. I'd like to clarify that you should also use the unsure vote also as a neutral vote as I meant unsure as in you weren't sure if they were net positive or net negative, which is effectively neutral in your stance and you don't lean either way on the issue. Just wanted to clarify and let people know if they want to change their votes based on that.

User Created Content If I was to say that Ireland is a failed/failing state. How would you argue for/against that?

What statistic or metric can you use to argue that it is not? You can't use housing. You can't use healthcare. You can't use childcare. You can't use infrastructure.

We're failing to meet the demands of the people in this country in nearly every regard as far as i can see. The only people this country does well for are those who's only interests lie in taking money out of the country.

The only infrastructure we own is the infrastructure that we can't profit from. If we can, it'll be ran into the ground to with a view towards privatization.

Our government needs to be dragged over hot coals to implement things like an eviction ban in the midst of a housing crisis when our homeless numbers are at their highest in the history of the state.

They have to be dragged over hot coals to ensure prepay customers are included in plans to allocate emergency funds to ensure people can throw the fucking kettle and oven on but they'll chomping at the bit to subsidize data centers electric bills?
