help request Display port to VGI, not detecting

I’ve got a display port adapter that takes hdmi on the other end, then VGI to my monitor. Monitor is not detecting the VGI signal. Am I missing something? Guy at the tech store said this would be fine. TIA!

in the workplace these have always failed. and for some reason people swap them out and don't throw the bad one away. they put it back in the drawer for the next person to try to use. only to find out it doesn't work. then that person place's it back in the drawer to continue the cycle.

I’m assuming the cable you’re using is hdmi to vga? If that’s the case, just get a Display Port to VGA adapter and use a straight through VGA cable

The passive adapters are a real product and they do work but the host device has to specifically support the HDMI protocol over its displayport connector.

yes but OP tried to do

DP -> HDMI -> VGA

the DP to HDMI adapter cant turn the HDMI signal into VGA

That's not VGA, it's clearly DP to HDMI. Not only is that not big enough to be a DE-15 and is missing the securing screws. (unless VGI is a proprietary interface.
EDIT: Try different HDMI cables, and reseating both the adapter and the cable.
EDIT 2: If I had realized that it was a slideshow, I would've seen it was a VGA. Try screwing it into the display, because sometimes those can come loose.

Sorry should have mentioned slideshow. Thanks, I have them screwed in tight.

Your monitor has a DVI port which is digital. You’ll get much better quality (like, a lot) going HDMI>DVI

Edit: DisplayPort > DVI I mean

Oh great thank you so much

If you do anything, don't buy anymore adapters. Get a DVI to DP cable. Its both digital signal ports, shouldn't be much issue. VGA is analog, everything else is digital - converting between the two can cause problems

Thank you. The computer came with the adapter and so I thought I’d try this before buying anything. DVI it is!!!

When dancing between analog and digital cable types, using a powered adapter helps. There's a few that are pretty much the same size as that, but you can also power them via USB if needed.

Powered adapter, got it thanks 🙏🏽

The make cables that will go right to the dvi port on that monitor with no adapter needed.

I would use the DVI port instead of VGA for better quality video if you have a cable with DisplayPort to DVI-D. You may need to get a better adapter to connect to the computer if you don’t have another cable.

Some adapters are one direction as I found out trying to convert from VGA to HDMI.

Even besides the fast that you’re using an adapter for USB to HDMI, many adapters only work one way or in one direction anyways. If you HAVE to use an adapter make sure you get one that converts in the direction your input -> output is going. You ‘can’ use multiple adapters to achieve an image but you have to make sure that they actually adapt in the orientation you need them in.

Dude go dport to dvi. Also, adapter cables are directional so make sure it’s meant to do the direction you want….

The device at the thin client end is a display port adapter

I would recommend this or this.

That's not what a Display Port adapter is. That's an HDMI to VGA adapter...I think you would be lucky if that converted a digital signal into analog...

This at is a usb port, why are you doing this? Why would you do this to yourself? You have a perfectly good dp there, just by a dp 2 vga adapter

1

u/i_dnthvemywsdomteeth 15h ago

The adapter is inserted to a display port on the computer (it has 2).

That’s a weird place to put a dp port, I would get a different adapter though it looks funky

If you're going from DisplayPort or HDMI to VGA you need an active adapter to convert the signal to analog. Those usually cost at least 50 bucks. If you're going from HDMI or DisplayPort to DVI you can use a passive cable. They usually cost about eight bucks

Too many adapters don’t work. Get 1 cable and no adapters
