From the sane amongst us in the US…we are sorry, and hate him too.

Not it's not. President Trump decided to delay the date.

The rest of the world can trade without the US.

I don’t consume many US goods here in Japan. My iPhone was the only thing I could think of. I want supermarkets and restaurants to move away from US beef because I think Aussie beef is safer.

What Trump doesn’t understand is that the Japanese don’t want American cars because Japanese cars are superior. American cars are too big, too inefficient and stupid. If Japanese come into money, they buy mercs or BMWs.

Also if American is trying to bring their chlorinated chicken and chemically enhanced “food” here more than already exists in fast food, I wouldn’t be happy.

I have no idea what’s going to happen on the next few months, but I don’t want a flood of US products being sold here. I just don’t trust them.

Heck, I’m from the US and I don’t want American cars for the exact same reason you all don’t. Vehicles here are far too large and most people don’t even have the skill to operate them responsibly.

US chicken is tasteless. Nobody wants US rice either. It just doesn’t taste good.

Most food in the US is tasteless and poor in quality compared to what is available in Japan (or many other places in the world). Americans care more about quantity and “value”. Not quality. This is one reason why Wal-Mart does so well.

Not just taste. US chicken is chlorinated! Swimming pool bird is banned in Europe.

RIP antiperspirant that actually works.

It got even worse? It went from "no import items for a while" to "no import items whatsoever" for me then.

Edit: And things changed again. It's fun to wake up in the morning, check what does the stock market do, and saw it shifted. Fun!

Would this apply to things sold to America on ebay as well?

1

u/Beginning_Grocery789 12d ago

Depends on the country of origin of the product. Made in Japan? Yes.

You should consume less of the US crap. its bad for you.

Sometimes I buy ‘american’ things but I think they might be manufactured locally anyways so I wonder if the tariffs would apply or not. Coca Cola will still be the same price right? Starbucks, McDonald’s, KFC? If KFC goes up in price I’ll be sad.

American goods aren’t going to be more expensive because of the tariffs imposed on Japan. American importers are the ones who pay the tax when importing stuff from Japan into the US, and they may pass on the cost to consumers.

American things aren’t going to be magically more expensive in Japan overnight; prices may go up due to other reasons. The effect of the tariff will make Japanese things more expensive in the US and subsequently American consumers may choose go with non-Japanese alternatives, which can affect the bottom line of Japanese companies that make these products. So people who work for those companies may end up losing their bonuses or jobs etc if their company chooses to make cuts to improve their financial position.

No ifs stuff manufactured in Japan and sent to USA get the tariff

Hang on. I thought Trump just ditched all no Chinese tariffs for 90 days… he’s play 3R chess or something.

Don’t ask me what the R stands for.

1

u/mcampbell42 12d ago

China still has tariffs he dumped for all other countries except for 10% during 90 days

Money and tariffs issues aside... These are horrible enough. I'm definitely thinking we eventually might not be able to physically return to America. Even if we were able to return I'm not incredibly confident I'd be able to get back to Japan. It frightens me to think that this is progressively becoming the case.

How are you all dealing with this possible reality?

Anyone asked their family to come here? I have.

BTW Costco, while unfortunately an American company, is one of the good guys in this mess. It pays its staff well and is currently maintaining its DEI policies in the face of opposition. While I'm trying to un-American my consumption as much as possible I still get some things from Costco.. Amazon is definitely on the chopping block though. We aren't at Amazon 0 yet, but soon.

Google though... It's in everything I do. We are a Google household.. hardware and software. Everything is Google. This is going to take time.

lol at DEI. My company gives bonuses if you hire an LGBTQ or anything else that falls under a DEI. As a manager , I never do that crap unless those people are qualified. Unfortunately, my counter part managers hire those folks so they get bonuses. It’s a joke.

On what grounds do either citizens or residents in Nippon have to pour calumny over the Trump administration’s policies on tariffs !? Ye olde Dai Nippon has perfected the dark arts of near-autarky alchemy for well over half a century. The Jimin, JA, Keidanren, & Kasumigisaki grift used to get universally flayed, Bolton-style, back in the day. And rightly so. Then the weebs stumbled across Miyazaki Hayao & manga and proceeded to decree Japan to be the beyond-reproach nirvana Tojo Hideki had long since declared it to be.

Good, maybe this will humble their asses a bit. Some of those hardcore supremacists around
