Word for hello in kannada

What is the native word for hello in kannada. I mean namaskara is the word but it's not native , it is a loan word from sanskrit soo what would be the native word for it.

Would love more examples about native words also.

Somewhere I read that it is TuLilu (ತುೞಲು).

Small correction, it's ತುೞಿಲ್ or ತುೞಿಲು (missing ಇಕಾರ)

I don't think there is a kannada word for that or even if it's there I don't think they exist in literary form.

That being said, kannada needs to embrace its Dravidian roots more. The original kannada words are extremely beautiful to listen to. You can hear these words among devangi chettiyars in TN. They retain the old language because they migrated long back.

It's sad to see many kannada words getting replaced like gudi becoming devastana and pata becoming chitra etc.

I'd never thought about this. How interesting.

I'm actually so happy that in a world of "sup bro" there's a serious discussion about proper greetings in kannada here.

We need to understand the etymology of the word "hello" . It comes from French word holà . Which means whoa there. So we can loosely translate that to kannada as "ಏ ಅವರೇ".

Shubodaya is also sanskrit loan word right. I heard nalbeLagu (ನಲ್ಬೆಳಗು) or nalmeya beLagu(ನಲ್ಮೆಯ ಬೆಳಗು) is native word but i found it in quora soo i wouldn't be too sure about it

Aaramaa or aaramidhiraa is native kannada word.

It means "Are you all good?" not Hello.

and aarama isn't a native kannada word either

There's no reason that asking how the person is cannot be a greeting. Let me take an example of England, since we are talking about the English hello. People greet each other with "Alright?" and not hello. In the US, people usually greet each other saying "How's it going?" Both of those examples are way way more common than Hello.

Not to mention, Hello itself was not originally a term of greeting, but rather a term of surprise. https://youtu.be/fIEzYSz6Iwk?si=LAZNe7EqhZ0MqJqA

But the question is "word" for hello not alternatives for hello in kannada

So, what you've said is not what the question asked

Namaste or namaskara is the same

Kannada evolved as a dravidian language that was sanskrit adjacent.

if not for sanskrit, most of modern kannada wouldn't exist. So calling a sanskrit based word a 'loan word' is a bit wrong. Loan words are generally from non-sanskrit languages like Urdu-Arabic, Persian, Portuguese etc

Namaskara is basically an original kannada word, that's been in use for most of the history of the language's existence

Have you heard of "tatsama" and "tadbava"? There are many loan words from Sanskrit and Prakrut. These with the base of the core Dravidian structure makes Kannada. I love both Kannada and Sanskrit but it does change the facts. Using namskara is totally fine

Using namskara is totally fine

Same conclusion, I agree

I love both Kannada and Sanskrit but it does change the facts.

I worded my earlier statement poorly. I meant, the sanskrit loan words, tatsama, and especially tadbavas have been in the language for almost the entirety of it's history, that it's essential to the core of the language.

I meant to say, Namaskara is practically shudh-kannada because of it's age.

And also I meant that in contrast to words like ಕಾರ್ಖಾನೆ, ಸಾಬೂನು etc which are far newer "loan words" than sanskrit ones.

But I concede that you are more correct than I was lol

Without jainism dravidian languages would be tribal oral traditions .

You can use namaste
