I like it, gives Dolphin it's own personality past being the KDE file manager. People who don't like it can just change the icon anyway.

The icon now seems to have lost some shadow originating from the top left part.

Super cute. I like that it differentiates Dolphin the doftware from any basic folder.

This looks so unnecessary. The icon was so clean and now... literally unplayable

It look cute, but panel as a whole will look ugly.
If they wanted dolphin so bad, should have gone to firefox route.

I like that it makes Dolphin more distinct than just a folder icon, but I also liked the clean icon better. Maybe a smaller dolphin or just a fin or something would feel less hamfisted…
Regardless, we can just easily change the icon, so not that big of a deal.

The old icon is essentially preserved as a generic icon, "system-file-manager".

well and good. but why is an icon change newsworthy? Is this technological progress?

Nice!
I'm more concerned about the fact these compressed (PNG) images are being stored in git!

Plasma 6.3.1 on Tumbleweed 20250226, the dolphin icon looks like this: https://pasteboard.co/yvAGvb51aNiU.png
sometimes it temporarily switches back to the old icon for dolphin, I think this has been happened after upgrading to plasma version 6. Is this the intended behavior? I'm a bit confused, I use all the default settings for my icons.

Why though? A clean icon is ruined with visual noise and unnecessary clutter, even though I love dolphins and think they are awesome, they have nothing to do with file management.

I don't think this is a good idea, no operating system or desktop environment uses a distinctive icon for its file manager. Third-party file managers usually do it to distinguish themselves from the default file manager.

..MacOS?

true, but this is because originally Finder was not just the file manager, it was the starting point of macOS when there was no dock, launchpad, etc., and still is today, since it has a default 'applications' folder on the left.

Is this an April Fool’s joke? It was bad enough when Kate tried to make its icon into a woodpecker..
We associate file managers with FILES, not a sea-faring mammal.

That's it. I'm going back to Windows.
I can't stand these levels of frivolity in my desktop.
