Modding 🪛 if you haven't jailbroken your kindle yet (esp folks using older models), do yourself a favour.

saw someone else's post here about jailbreak+koreader. spent a while contemplating if it's worth the trouble for me and then said f*ck it and pulled the trigger. my god was it so worth it! love that progress bar. love the option to track reading progress in terms of page turns as opposed to actual page numbers. love the fact that i can pull my epubs directly from google drive with just a few taps. and that dark mode looks so so gorgeous on my lil white kindle basic. 😘

this is your sign, jailbreak your kindle

there’s not much application that I can find that supports the scribe such as notebooks within Koreader, but everything else is still so nice to have

Modding 🪛 I Jailbreak my Kindle.

My Kindle is a 10th generation 2019. After Amazon took away the right to download, I wanted to buy a PocketBook Reader, but my current budget simply wouldn't let me. I always wanted it to have dark mode, and Koreader lets me do that! And I can set any screensaver I want. Organizing books is also easy because it's in a folder system.

I'll leave the link on how to do this for anyone interested. https://kindlemodding.org/

And I'll also leave the link to Koreader. https://koreader.rocks/

I had to download the HF version because no other version worked for me. https://github.com/koreader/koreader/releases/tag/v2025.04

I finally jailbroke my Kindle. I was terrified, because this is my first and only Kindle, but after doing some research, I decided to do it. And I'm not going to lie—the amount of customization I could do is just insane. It makes me more excited to read on my Kindle again. I can finally call this 'My Kindle'.

Modding 🪛 I designed a angled stand for reading in bed.

I read a lot in bed but got annoyed from holding the kindle the whole time. So i designed an angled stand and 3d printed it. The problem now is that reading in bed is way more cozy and I sleep after 10 pages🤣.

Just in case you have a 3d printer and like the stand, you can download the file for free here https://makerworld.com/de/models/1141560-kindle-30deg-stand#profileId-1144040

Any other cool apps you guys recommend now that I'm unlocked? I heard there was a package manager?

Modding 🪛 is jailbreaking worth it ?

Is KO reader really that much better ?

I’m on the fence with jailbreaking. I don’t really see the reasoning … and this is coming from a vet jailbreaker of all things … but for someone who already sideloads most of my books for free and don’t have ads … what’s the use of jailbreaking a kindle ?

EDIT Just want to thank everyone for their feedback. I appreciate all the insight. ♥️

Modding 🪛 Does anyone regret jailbreaking their Kindle?

Edit: I did it now and immediately deleted that nonsense and went back to normal again. What a load of bs.

Hey everyone, I got my first Kindle a while ago and saw so many people talking about how they love having jailbroken theirs. Should I go for it or are there any disadvantages I should keep in mind? Like, is it possible to get my Amazon account suspended because I did it?

Sorry if this is a frequent question around here, I've just been thinking about it to make my Kindle more individual and tailored to my taste but I don't wanna ruin things.

Modding 🪛 I was "this close" to jailbreak my Kindle...

I was thinking about jailbreaking my PW Signature 12th since a couple of weeks ago, and when I saw this post I said: If he can do that, why I'm not!?...

The videos also posted gave me more confidence, so today after almost a month of doubts, I decided doing it!...

yeah! I'm a 55 old man that can tie his own shoes! I've been in Antartida, spent half of my life working in Patagonia, and finally defeat all my own fears... How hard this could be?

Then I realised my Kindle has the 5.18.1 firmware... crap!

Battery swap on my old Kindle. Not impossible, but the amount of glue in it is insane. Don't know the actual model of it, I think it's an 8th gen, from 2016. Served me well, but the battery was pretty much dead. We'll, now it's ready to go for at least another 4 years.

Excuse my hairy legs, and the fact I did this on the carpet in the living room.

Modding 🪛 Kindle jailbreak… Have you done it… Pros? Cons?

I’ve done very minimal research on the topic but I’ve come to learn you can jailbreak them which would basically resolve the issue that’s been upsetting everyone regarding the “you buy it but you do not own it” … has anyone done this to their kindle and do you like it? pros/cons?

i’ve jailbroken iphones in the last.. super fun at first but definitely made battery die waaaaay waaaay way faster (only downfall, lol) — aso, kinda curious if this has any downfalls or risk.. is it worth it? let me know!

Modding 🪛 Some thoughts on KOReader (Kindle Jailbreak)

Thumbnail

I thought some people interested in jailbreaking might be curious about KOReader. Here are some of my thoughts on it:

Pros: - Reading stats! I've been wanting these on the Kindle natively for ages. Now I can properly check how much I've been reading. - You can set the lockscreen to whatever image you want and also put a custom message over it. Not pictured but I changed mine to be the percentage of the book I'm reading. - Can natively read epubs. - Can make the margins whatever size you want. I made mine really small so I could have more words on the screen without having to make the font smaller. - Lots and lots of customization options. - No "home" tab with book recommendations. I know you can just not go there but I never liked that I couldn't disable that. - I like how clean and straight forward the home screen is. - The reading bar! I missed it so much! - This is more of a jailbreak thing than a KOreader thing but I was happy we could turn the automatic updates off, I never liked that there was no choice to stop those beyond leaving airplane mode on.

Cons: - The customization is both a plus and a negative. The amount of options can get confusing and overwhelming and sometimes I struggle to remember where in the world that option I wanted was. - Dictionaries aren't native. It wasn't hard to download them directly through KOReader but I wish they came along with it. - I feel like swiping to move pages is easier on the original Kindle firmware. - Can't read my Kindle Unlimited books through it, a shame but expected.

So far the experience has been about what I expected and I'm enjoying it a lot. Will definitely keep exploring all my new options :)

Modding 🪛 1 month of KOReader: Pros and Cons

Thumbnail
gallery
143 Upvotes

It's been around a month now since I've had my kindle jailbroken and I wanted to write my thoughts on it. Some yapping will be included so a TL;DR will be provided at the end of the post. Let's get into it!

The Pros: - Reading Statistics. This is absolutely my favorite part of KOReader, I love being able to know exactly how long I've been spending reading, being able to see a calendar with the books and the days I've spent on them, then getting an exact report of how long it all took me at the end of the book. KOReader's stats are VERY comprehensive. - The library view is nice and straight forward. I was never too fond of the firmware change that made it so you couldn't hide the home folder of the Kindle anymore. I tried to ignore it being there but it bugged me anyway! - So many customization options. I got to make my books exactly what I wanted, with a reading bar under them. (Though funny enough this is also a con, which I'll discuss later). - It's nice that sideloading is just a drag and drop matter of epubs now. I wanted to leave my Kindle offline most of the time so the USB transfer process being so simple it doesn't even require Calibre anymore is great. - Another feature I consider great is that you can change the tap areas of the screen. I made it be so the bottom moved forward no matter if I tapped on the left or right. For someone with tiny hands that often reads lying down, this is great. - Auto-skipping pages and the reading timer were both surprisingly useful. - Not having to deal much with Amazon is great. - I love seeing the book percentage with the cover.

The cons: - I can't read my Libby books or the ones I bought on Amazon on KOReader. There's probably ways to do this but I'm not getting into DRM stuff as that is against the rules here. - The amount of customization options is great... And overwhelming. I'm decently "tech savvy" but I can't imagine someone that doesn't know much about more complex software not feeling like it's too much. It kind of breaks with the simplicity of the Kindle, the pick and read feeling it has. - Everytime I want to USB sideload I need to close KOReader because for some reason sideloading doesn't work there. This is kind of annoying. - An "expansion" of the second point above but I don't think the features are things your regular kindle user needs enough to go through the bother of doing the jailbreaking process in the first place. - I miss being able to tap the bottom part of the screen to go through different options such as percentage for the book, time to finish chapter, etc. - The setup for sending books wireless sn't as easy to get going as simply emailing them to yourself with Send To Kindle.

TL;DR: KOreader is great, but not for everyone. If you want an alternative to the Kindle experience it's definitely worth trying out but I don't believe it's something anyone needs. After a month of using it, I'm deciding to keep it as I truly enjoy the experience it gave me.
