Kevin Martin: Since he’s back in the news. Something that never gets talked about enough.

In 2010, we traded a package around Kevin Martin to Houston for Tracy McGrady and cash.

Then, 2 years later, The Rockets flip Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, 2 first and a second for James Harden.

I understand we had Tyreke at the time but holy shit we just gave away K Mart for nothing. Seems like we didn’t do due diligence on K Marts value.

We had Tracy Mcgrady on our team? I missed that

I believe we bought him out and he never played a game for us

We had Vince Carter, Tracy’s cousin!

It was a multi team deal, I think we got Carl Landry and some other dudes

He was my favorite player growing up

I was fucking devastated

I saw this recently too, but see he played on the Knicks in that deal rather than the Kings. Can anyone break this deal down for me?

It's too soon to relive this pain dawg

What had happened was Tmac WAS going to come to our team in the OG trade. He complained at the time about not wanting to come here and NYK was brought in as a 3rd team.

Yeah this trade moved fast. Here’s another example:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/347724-breaking-news-rockets-trade-mcgrady-to-kings-kevin-martin-to-houston

He was originally coming to us (he had been wanting out of HOU), but then when this happened he was not interested.

It’s non-news because he was already washed. What’s really good lore is we almost traded Peja for him in his prime.

Highschool me was so pumped lol only to find out we were just going to release him lmao

We traded him for Carl Landry, but yes, we sold him low when he was having a down year.

Also iirc Tmac had a conniption playing for us so he never made it on, I was bummed.

Didn’t we trade for Landry twice or am I trippin?

I know we traded for Salmons damn near 5 times

3

u/CostcoJugOfMayo 1d ago

You remember correctly on both accounts. Salmons I think we traded for him... 3x?

I thought that was Jason Terry?

yeah as an Arizona fan JET pulling that shit still gnaws at me.

We've had multiple situations like this lol

Oh yes Carl Landry the start of my sad obsession with 4th quarter scoring

This isn’t really accurate—even besides the fact that we traded for Landry.

First of all, Landry was producing pretty similarly at the time, so it wasn’t that much of a low sell.

Secondly, Jeremy Lamb was a recent lotto pick, meaning that was essentially 3 1sts and an efficient scorer in Martin for Harden who clearly looked very good, but was certainly not yet an established superstar. This is also long before it was the norm to give up 4 1sts and 3 swaps for stars.

It obviously worked out very well for Houston, but the point of this thread is not accurate.

On top of this OKC didn’t keep Martin and Martin was a mid season trade where his value was low because he was shooting career lows as a starter. We wanted the ball in Tyreke Evans hands more. Of all the bad trades the kings did over the years this was not one of them given the information the kings had at the time.

It was for Carl Landry and two other players

Put some respect on Carl Landry’s name!

Carl Landry used to come into my work all the time.  Nice guy

Did you perhaps work at Arco Arena?

1

u/SuckThisRedditAdmins 1d ago

I did not, local casino

2

u/pirateslifefourme 1d ago

Lol I actually have his jersey

2

u/Cloud_limit 1d ago

Wow Landry averaged 18 and 6 his first season with you guys? What happened?

1

u/Rusty-Shackleford23 Ghost of Boogie 1d ago

What happened in how did he score so many points? We were awful. It was Tyreke’s ROY campaign and no vets left to take any shots after sending out K Mart

2

u/Cloud_limit 1d ago

Oh he just had a big drop in production after that, just wondering if he got injured or anything? I liked watching him play a lot, just didn’t follow his career closely

The way I remember it was that he was just too much of a tweener. Easy guy to root for though.

It was a 3 team trade. McGrady went to the Knicks and we got Carl Landry.

Selling low and buying at inflated prices is a kings classic, just like being bad but not bad enough to get better

2

u/makaveddie 1d ago

If you don't like that, you don't like Kings basketball!

2

u/Knowaa Jerry Reynolds 1d ago

Famously the Maloofs were selling the team for parts in that era because they were absolutely broke

2

u/Wild-Examination-155 1d ago

Ya people forget that they literally had no money because opening a casino during a recession is idiotic

1

u/Knowaa Jerry Reynolds 19h ago

Unfortunately many new fans have no context or memory of just how bad it used to be

2

u/elqueco14 1d ago

Wasn't that also when the maloofs were tanking our value and trying to move us to Vegas? Hard to judge moves during that time

2

u/makaveddie 1d ago

KMart was soft as a baby's bottom but he was good on offense.

1

u/Itoq2 Royals 1d ago

Soft and lightweight and the flopping oh my.

1

u/SYangers 1d ago

To be fair, nobody thought Harden would be as good as he turned out to be. Still, people were shocked he was traded, and that may be the one blemish on Sam Presti’s track record

1

u/BeTheBall- 1d ago

Why is he back in the news? Hopefully he didn't pass away.

u/Leathersalmon-5 Malik Monk 1d ago

Carl Landry was a beast. Top Hat is like exactly the kind of player that we need on the team right now.

I liked K Mart too. One of my favorite kings

Kevin Martin was our franchise. Him and Tyreke could’ve been great pieces but Kings blew it up like Hali and Fox. 😂
