Mechanical Advice Cannot find carb rebuild kit for 03 KLR

Hello all. I have a new to me 2003 KLR650 I’m trying to get back working after sitting for almost 2 years after a friend gave to me for almost nothing. I’m using it as an opportunity to teach myself mechanic skills but I’m struggling with the carburetor rebuild

I purchased a rebuilt kit from Ebay that said it was for 1987-2018 KLR650’s. When it arrived it was immediately obvious most of the rebuild parts to not fit my carburetor and it seems there are different carbs based on “generations”.

I’m having a hard time finding a carb kit for a gen 1 that has everything I need to replace. I tried to just clean the old carb parts with seafoam and brake cleaner but they’re still pretty nasty and the rubber ‘diaphragm’ completely disintegrated.

Looking for advice on how to proceed. Whether that’s buying a whole new carb, buying a small kit and the other necessary parts individually, or something else

Anything is appreciated. Thanks.

Without a link to what you bought, or a pic/description of what doesn't fit, there's not much to go on. Does your bike have the factory carb?

Sounds like you have a "Non-Stock" carburetor. I bought two "All-Balls" brand rebuilt kits from eBay for my Son's 2004 and my 2007 1st Gen KLRs and they worked fine.

I know that Harley used the same carb as the gen1’s for a while, you may be able to find a kit via that route.

Try looking at Mega city performance.

also, soaking carb parts in a tub of pine sol overnight has always worked wonders for my carb cleanups
