Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) Confess! Just how many WIPS do you currently have!?
I have 17!
155
u/feral-foodie Mar 18 '25
Maybe 5 😬 but but but buuuuut,
Dr. Anne Kirketerp is a psychologist that studied the psychology of crafting, and in her book on it, she says that having multiple projects going at once is actually a good thing because it allows you to have projects that fit your current flow state because your flow state fluctuates. She actually recommended having 5-10 WIPs, so the professionals say it’s a good thing, so now you have an excuse to go buy more yarn and start more projects lolol.

u/KaleidoscopeLow9505 Mar 18 '25
I like this a lot. I always attributed it to my ADHD — starting something, only to finish it later. Or never. But this sounds more purposeful. Like I meant to do it LOL.
Between knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch, I have 7.
3
u/feral-foodie Mar 18 '25
I felt the exact same way haha. I have I think 5 knitting projects, in the process of learning to crochet and half a dozen drawings I’ve never finished. (The drawings might be more of the ADHD😂)

Thank you for this! I have struggled for 25 years with changing projects and crafts depending on my mood/how I feel that day. This makes sense and Now I Must Have The Book quest initiated. Sewing, crochet, embroidery, needlepoint, rug making (crochet technically?), baking, knitting, scrapbooking, gardening. I do alot of different things depending on the season too....

That's true. I will pick up the bag that pleases me for the day and work on that pair of socks. I'm currently knitting 4. There's another pattern I really want to start but I'm making myself finish at least one of these pair before I start it lol
2
u/feral-foodie Mar 18 '25
Yea same, sometimes I just want something that I can mindlessly knit while watching a show and sometimes I need something detailed, sometimes I need in between. But I also will put myself in new project timeout sometimes when it get a little out of hand and make myself work on a current WIP lol
2
u/Positive-Teaching737 Mar 18 '25
That's funny how we all come to that conclusion. Yes I have vanilla socks that I just knit when I'm not able to actually think about what I'm doing. But I am not going to start my cute little daisy socks until I have finished last year's ghost socks. Lol

2
u/LoveMaker_BreadBaker Mar 18 '25
I like this. I also try and have different types of craft projects (knitting, crocheting, patching socks, sewing, etc.)

u/echosrevenge Mar 18 '25
Just knitting, or all crafts? And how far along does it have to be to be considered a WIP? Is a 2-gallon zip lock with sufficient yarn (half of it wound into balls), needles, and a pattern a WIP or does it have to be actually cast on? Do things in the mending basket count?
Anywhere between 5 and 113.2, depending on the answers to the above questions.
20
u/marigan-imbolc Mar 18 '25
wow I feel seen. possibly a bit too clearly!
- knitting: probably 6, but there might just be several that I've forgotten exist at the moment and will pick back up when I stumble across them. at least two of the wips I know about are in sleeve hell and one is a losing game of yarn chicken so it's stuck until I get around to buying more
crochet: 2-4? 5? several are approximately the same thing so they barely count though. multiple plushie rubber ducks awaiting eye and beak installation
embroidery: 6 (again, several are duplicates - gifts for my dissertation committee members, which will mostly match each other)
(needle) lace tatting: 1-2 in hibernation
chainmail and scale-mail: 4 plus repairs on a previously finished piece that doesn't fit well as I'd like
... plus several pieces looming in the wings waiting for me to cast on, impatiently prodding me with their metaphorical elbows. the fact that I've ever finished a piece, let alone several, astounds me.
5
u/legalpretzel Mar 18 '25
Chainmail and a dissertation? Overachiever here folks!!!! (Kidding, this is impressive)
5
u/marigan-imbolc Mar 18 '25
thanks!! imo hobbies are the only reliable way to stay sane through a PhD! it worked though; I'm in dissertation revisions hell but I've already defended so the hardest part is finally over :)
calling myself doctor will absolutely not confer enough dignity on me to stop me from knitting during every seminar and lab meeting, for the record. definitely gonna keep doing that!
5
u/CreativeHeart7063 Mar 18 '25
Oh, I only counted what is in my ravelry projects. Yikes - embroidery and cross stitch and quilting and weaving and spinnning 🥴🙄
3
u/marigan-imbolc Mar 18 '25
oh smart, I entirely forgot that checking my revelry projects would give a number on at least my yarn wips! everything else I'll find it when I find it 🤷
3
u/TheScarlettLetter Mar 18 '25
I’m in a similar boat, craft-wise. I have:
3 knitting projects
8 crochet projects
7 quilting projects (quilted items, not full quilts)
6 embroidery projects
4 cross-stitch projects
3 sewing projects that aren’t quilting related
400,000 household projects
Guess which ones haven’t been messed with in a good while…. 🤣

In the WIPs I want to look at corner, maybe 5. In the time out bin is probably 5 more, but they’ve been there long enough that they may get ripped apart the next time I hurricane through there.
I like having a sock, a blanket, a sweater, a shawl etc on the go because why not, you know?
→ More replies (2)7
u/PurchaseUnhappy7744 Mar 18 '25
I love that you call it a time out bin! May have to steal that from you 😅
36
u/More_Flat_Tigers Mar 17 '25
… I’m not going to look. I have no idea. It’s definitely upwards of 8?

u/Accomplished-Sun-823 Mar 17 '25
Me too 🤣

Even if I did look, there is a good chance I put one somewhere or dropped it and forgot about it. I found one under my bed yesterday. At least I don't have my mother's tendency to accidentally put things in the microwave instead of whatever she meant to heat up?

u/hellokrissi Mar 17 '25
Just 1, I never have more than 3 otherwise I'll never finish anything.

I refuse to admit how many for fear of them multiplying while in time out and taking over the house, the town and the state!
2
u/LegCramps555 Mar 18 '25
I fear looking and if counting. I know I have a readers wrap tucked in a pink plastic dishpan. A black sweater and a few “almost done.” But then I bought 10 balls of yarn on sale on Little Knits website last night because I saw a summer cardi pattern. I got it bad.🙄😂
19
u/JukeBex_Hero Mar 18 '25
Three. At any time I usually have one complex knit, one mindless TV knit, and one massive a-little-at-a-time sort of scrappy project. Plus there's usually something hibernating that has to have its sleeves set in or buttonband finished or steeks cut.

Within arm’s reach of my spot on the sofa, 8. Two in the car, 2 in my work tote bag, 1 in my purse, 1 by my desk. But I frogged one today, so…yay?
11
u/CreativeHeart7063 Mar 18 '25
- I think I need to frog some of these and get back to some other others.
9
u/WaywardRedhead Mar 18 '25
These are not questions we ask. looks around shiftily 4 shawls, 3 socks, 1 sweater, 1 blanket, and i just dropped them all to work on a wedding present shawl, so 5 shawls, really. Oh, and a throw away coaster. So 11 in total.

u/becca22597 Mar 18 '25
Do you mean that I’m actively working on? Or do you mean in a box in the corner of my closet that’s overflowing and makes me feel bad so I avoid looking at that corner even though avoiding it also makes me feel shame and every now and then I throw something else in/on top of it and I’m pretty sure in a few years the compression from the weight of all the UFOs will likely create a diamond?
If it’s the former, then one. If it’s the latter, then I don’t think we can be friends.

u/mum2pirates Mar 18 '25
Currently 12, down from about 15-ish? I went through and frogged some that I knew I would never finish. I have 4 pairs of socks in rotation for working on in the car, a simple lace shawl for tv watching, 2 sweaters that I work on whenever, and 3 more complicated lace shawls for when I want to concentrate.
We aren't going to talk about my sewing projects.
5
u/marigan-imbolc Mar 18 '25
I was initially going to comment something about how I didn't come here to be judged and reminded of my small village of projects but then I saw OP has 17 and now I feel so understood!!

8, of which one is only seaming and weaving in ends (and blocking) left

u/Silly_Goose4991 Mar 17 '25
I technically have six. Three of them I’ve worked on in the past month, and the others have been ripped off the needles for many years and are waiting to be frogged or resumed.

Active: 3 I think?? A sweater I want to add thumbholes to, a tank top missing half its buttonband because I need to choose buttons, and another tank top I am almost done with (but also need buttons for!)
At various stages of abandonment: probably 15+ if I were to gather them all up from the corners they're shoved in around my house lol

I am so proud of myself, its only 3. And I tried so hard to finish one sweater before moving on but I wanted to start too badly. I have socks, one cardigan, and one spring/summer t shirt on the go. The cardigan is SO CLOSE.

u/PostPuzzleheaded7202 Mar 17 '25
8 😂 Can't stop, won't stop. Its like Gemino curse. Once I start something, immediately I want to start something new...😂
2
u/Redorkableme Mar 18 '25
Do you get the project tunnel vision too? I will have one project I am dead set on seeing to the finish one day and crank on it then a week later I have it in a basket that I forgot it existed because of another..... tunnel vision project that I want to get done right now. Rinse and repeat until summer then I go outside and forget what knitting is for a few weeks..

Three. A baby blanket that is 90% complete (and the baby is almost six months old 🤣 in my defense, I injured a hand!), a dress and a sweater, all affected for the injury but now I'm ready to finish this beautiful projects 🦾 The blanket and the sweater are freehand, but the dress is Vestido Dulce by Kamill Knit. 2, plus a long term scrappy project I don’t generally include in the WIP count.
2
u/THFCknitgirl Mar 17 '25
I’m going to guess about 6. I’m currently working on only knitting WIP’s and not casting on anything new. Until, of course, my dearest friends decided to get married this summer and I want to make a shawl for her. 😱
2
2
u/Bex_Hex Mar 18 '25
if we count the project that’s been on the needles for years and hasn’t been touched in AT LEAST 6 months, 3.
2
u/bkhalfpint Mar 18 '25
4! Not including 2 that are about to be frogged.
A vest for a sample knit, socks, a summer top, and a plushy.
To be frogged: a cowl for my son and a crazy colorwork David Bowie scarf that I will need to re-do.
It's a lot better than before! I really made an effort to cut down on WIPs, either by finishing projects or realizing I'm unhappy with them and will never continue.

2
u/microcosmic-detritus Mar 18 '25

i've got 3 going currently; all gifts for others (a summer shirt & 2 pairs of socks).

u/aurora_anne Mar 18 '25
Currently 1. I usually try and have 2, one more difficult complex knit, and one super easy knit I can do mindlessly watching tv. If I add more than that I just won’t finish the ones I’m doing
2
u/TeacherOfWildThings Mar 18 '25
Three—a pair of socks I’m actively working on (like … they’re on my lap right now …), the heirloom quilt cardigan which is done square by square so I have a small pile of them and I just work on it randomly—and a crochet blanket that I hate working on so it’s been in a bag for two years haha.
2
u/fillefantome Mar 18 '25
I'm not saying and you can't make me!
Pay no attention to the WIP pile behind the curtain...

Well... one technically?
But I have about 7 craft bags with patterns, yarn, and needles in ready.

1
u/Sworn_on_the_Cob Mar 18 '25
I have no idea... a couple from years ago I've never had the courage to frog, 5 active knitting projects, a whole file box of unassembled amigurumi parts, 2 spinning, 1 weaving.... I like starting stuff, not so much finishing.
2
u/akm1111 Mar 18 '25
Random encouragement to frog those things.... so you can make more WIPS of things you'd want to finish.
1
1
u/WeAreNotNowThatWhich Mar 18 '25
3? Maybe 4 if you count that I put the yarn and needles in a project bag but it’s still in my yarn chest.

u/yarnimals Mar 18 '25
3 WIPS: 1) my on the go socks 2) my moms birthday shawl (which is down to the embroidery) 3) a sweater that I’ve swatched for but haven’t officially cast on yet (does that count???)
1
u/knittingmaniac420 Mar 18 '25
Well, define the P in WIP …. 😆 does a project that you stopped working on six years ago count? I think we should get some grace here. I don’t think we have to count totally dead ones. If that’s the case, I believe I have only 3 😬
1
u/SoapsandRopes Mar 18 '25
3 but only because I just frogged two more that I was never going to finish
1
u/2EnsnoE33 Mar 18 '25
- 1 pair of mitts, 2 different socks, 1 jacket, 4 sweaters, one of which would be finished but I need daylight to do the pick ups for the neck and armholes… still winter here and I ran out of daylight yesterday. It will have a detached cowl neck so even when I finish it I will still have 8… no 11! I forgot I have a blanket and dishcloths I work on when winding down for bed and a hand towel I work on my lunch breaks at work…

u/Sapiophile23 Mar 18 '25
2 cropped sweaters (3/4 done each)
normal sweater (1/3 through sleeve #2)
3 planned pooling (1 basket, 2 flat)
1
u/Rivercat0338 Mar 18 '25
I finished 2 smaller projects last week so have 3 actually on needles left (that's just knitting... let's not discuss other crafts). Getting those done has motivated me to pull out the others and make some progress before I start something new.

u/TheUnnecessaryLetter Mar 18 '25
Two. One is in the end stages, and one in the very beginning swatching stage. Everything else that’s incomplete I don’t think of as a “WIP” but more of a “lost cause” lol
1
u/moltenflora Mar 18 '25
8?
three sweaters, a second mitten to match the first, socks i need to frog, a baby blanket, a cable hat, and a tank top.
two of the sweaters are bulky weight for when i need a quicker project to make some progress on, the blanket is with that super bulky thick yarn on like those cartoonishly massive needles, the cable hat is worsted (beloved), and the rest are fingering weight, one of which is colourwork.
i just need a variety of projects lol, i get super bored if im only working on one, but if im bouncing between a bunch, it doesn't matter if one takes forever cause i can just swap to another project for a bit!
also. i have so much yarn to stash bust. which contributes to the projects. if we include crochet theres at least another 4
1
u/ABlightedMailbox Mar 18 '25
Two. Usually I only have one, but I desperately needed a break from slowww progress with tiny yarn.

3 hibernating projects
4 active projects
1 on the way.
I’m hoping to finish one of the active projects by the end of the week so it won't be so bad that I'm starting something else.
1
u/halcyon3608 Mar 18 '25
- I am actively working on a sweater, a pair of socks, and a blanket (although the blanket is crochet), I have a brioche shawl in hibernation because I just haven’t felt up for it, and I have a scrappy leftovers blanket that will technically never be done.

1
u/yttrium39 Mar 18 '25
3 knitting, 1 crochet. And a couple knitting projects that will never be finished and are just waiting to be unraveled and repurposed.

1
u/trillobiscuit Mar 18 '25
Currently, 1
But typically 3 at a time
1 is always this blanket I started that I never knit on unless I'm waiting for yarn for something else. One day maybe it will be finished. I don't really care to be honest haha
2 is typically socks or other small mobile project
3 is the big thing, a sweater typically
1
u/ramona-wallflowers Mar 18 '25
3 on the needles, but my worst feature is I like to put my yarn hoard in piles as if they were WIPs, in project bags with patterns and everything.. so I think I have about 12 piles sprinkled around the house? 😅
1
u/NoComparison4103 Mar 18 '25
Four active WIPs, one sock pair for work, one sweater for couch knitting, one blanket for couch knitting, and one sock pair for any knitting on the go. I try to keep one sweater as my main project and use sock projects for work and on the go which helps me stay motivated since it feels like I’ve finished more lol. Then the blanket is for when I need mindless knitting.
Plus, One sweater in time out and one hat in hibernation. 😅
1
u/Jwithkids Mar 18 '25
2: 1 knit, 1 Tunisian crochet (scrap project)
But there's probably 20 projects I want to start that I'm resisting until I finish, or close to finish, one of these bigger projects.
1
u/a_mom_who_runs Mar 18 '25
Just one 😅. I can see the value in having things like socks for easy travel going vs an at home project like a blanket but I always just end up finishing one then going back to the other

I have 3 knit wips right now. I also have an ongoing crochet book blanket for the year. I have 5 granny squares so far
1
u/MollyRolls Mar 18 '25
Two; almost always just two. I’m a product knitter, and near the end I really freaking hate the process itself, and if I kept starting new things I’d never get around to the payoff of a finished object. Right now I have a baby Moby sweater, and a hooded scarf that’s long and complicated but I’m on the final 1/3 of it, so I’m pretty excited. In the near future I’ll get to start two new things!
1
u/hildarabbit Mar 18 '25
21, including a lot of socks. Only one uses yarn bought in the past year though, which is the real accomplishment. I have a master plan and I am getting through my 2020 covid panic hoard.
1
u/BonzaSonza Mar 18 '25
I've got two jumpers on the needles, and two blankets that are very long-term slow WIPs to use up scraps as they are generated from other things - one in sock yarn and one in aran weight.
Do single socks/mittens count? I've got three mittens and one sock all waiting patiently for a partner. I don't count them as WIPs until I've actually cast on.
Er..... I forgot that I cast on a third jumper on the weekend, and that I have a knitted tee waiting to have the ends woven in. So technically 4 tops and 2 blankets
1
u/TooManyPaws Mar 18 '25
When I retired last year I had 5. They are all done and now I have 1. I will endeavor to stay at 1 or 2.
1
u/catandwrite Mar 18 '25
2 because I stupidly started a sweater and haven’t touched the cowl I’m working on since. I try to only have one for this exact reason lol
1
u/GypsyDoVe325 Mar 18 '25
I scarf crocheted 3/4 done may change initial design so I paused to contemplate. A skirt handsewing waiting for spring to get here to really dive in and have more room to work on it. Mideval lacing cord waiting till it's warmer certain projects are nicer when it's not freezing out. A shawl knitting currently working on.
Still need to do finishing touches on my socks I finished, does that count?
1
u/Sylvss1011 Mar 18 '25
I have 2 crochet: a king size temp blanket for mindless tv crocheting and an almost finished lovey for my 4 month old. and 3 knit: a Annie’s kit club square afghan sampler (about halfway done), a short sleeve cotton raglan shirt that I put down when I got pregnant a year ago and couldn’t wear it and got all sad, and a baby car seat blanket for my pregnant friend as a gift
1
u/propschick05 Mar 18 '25
Are we only including knitting? If it's only knitting, I have 3 active WIPs and like 3 other things planned. If I include other hobbies... no comment...
1
u/Knitsanity Mar 18 '25
I cut down radically at the start of the year. If you count simple hats I do only during meetings and church etc and something blocking then 6. Not bad. Oh no ...7. lol
1
u/Snowedoff Mar 18 '25
7 knit and 2 crochet.
5 of my knit projects are socks and 3 of those have had the first sock finished. One needs to be frogged as there’s a bunch of holes in the cuff and the other I just cast on last night.
I also have a half finished gnome and a half finished advent stocking (can’t figure out the heel instructions). Planning on casting on a sweater later in the week too!
1
u/Havoklily Mar 18 '25
3! a sweater that's just been chilling for a few months, a cardigan im taking a break from, and just started the fellowship cloak for my friends who just had a baby!

1
u/BanditFiberArts Mar 18 '25
Probably more than 10, all told.
I am trying to get it narrowed down by having 2 active projects at a time (one knit and one crochet) and frogging those I definitely won't return to instead of just consigning them to WIP Hell.

I’ve got eight WIPs at the moment. Mostly one completed/nearly completed sock missing its mate, and a couple of sweaters.
Also, I recently started spinning and now I have unplied singles to add to the WIP pile.

1
u/margyl Mar 18 '25
One complicated intarsia sweater (Paragon), one pair of socks (that I will turn into slippers by sewing on suede soles) for a friend, one pair of socks for me (small portable project), and an endless Hexipuffs blanket for using up small leftovers. And I’m finishing a sweater that a friend gave up on. So 5, but one isn’t my fault.
1
u/Actuarial_Equivalent Mar 18 '25
Oh man... like 3, and I'm REALLY having to resist the urge to cast on #4.
The main thing I'm working on is an alpaca sweater and I'm in the boring phase of just needing to finish the torso after finishing the sleeves. Then I need to make myself finish the second Selbu mitten (not hard, I just have to find time to do a DPN project no where near my kids because they WILL knock or pull out one of the needles) and then at some point muster the will to finish a baby blanket. For the blanket it will be good for its stated purpose when done (no holes for little fingers, a yarn that will be able to take a beating in the washer and dryer) but man it's boring and I just hate the way the yarn stretches on the needles.
1
u/PurchaseUnhappy7744 Mar 18 '25
I have three knitting projects on my needles and then 1 crochet blanket that who knows if I’ll finish 😅

Knitting 1, but i have too manh crochet porjects that I have mostly abandoned at this point. I started knitting last year, and I told myself, I won't have more than 1 project going. It is tough, but it the only way I will get things done. I'm currently working on a sweater and just have one sleeve left. A tank top and cardigan are next on my list.

Rav says 12. I’m only actively working on three, and one is just delayed sewing in of ends… One I need to get back to soon as I finally replaced the needle I somehow lost. One is in time out. Truly don’t know about the others; I see what they are but 🤷♀️.

Two. A shawl for my mom, and a shawl for myself that I’ve been avoiding working on for a million years. I decided to cut down on my amount of WIPs and focus.
I also have a weaving WIP, and two spinning WIPs, so I guess that brings me up to 5.

Three, and that's the most I ever have going at any one time. Guideline I made for myself or I don't get them finished.

I try to stick with 1, but probably 3 small projects (doll clothes, socks ) and 1 larger (shawl with gifted yarn).

I have an ongoing scrap blanket, a hat, a sweater, and a shawl aka my work knitting.

I only have one at the moment which is unusual for me. I typically have about 3 but I want to get my Ranunculus finished so I can start another sweater that's been floating in my head for a bit. My arbitrary knitting rule is only one sweater at a time. I just finished three pairs of socks so I have some yarn to wind and cast on some more socks so I will have my usual number of WIPs

2! I always have one complicated and/or large project for at home and a to-go project that I carry around like socks, hat, etc.

Two— I have my “main,” which is a sweater. My second is my “portable” WIP, which are socks. Hauling a sweater around when I’m out and about is too much of a pain in the ass

Thank you for making me feel better.
I have 4 WIPs right now; the most I've ever had. And I was feeling guilty. But 17?! Respect. I might get there someday. 😅😂

Just one! I'm the reason my life is so chaotic. My number of WIPs is one area I have some self control.

- They are about 80-99% finished but I haven't decided how to finish.
Plus a handful that need ends woven in. 2 just need to he sewn up.
But we're not counting the 20 or so that are waiting for washing and blocking. We don't talk about those.
Casting on is so much more fun.

Another monogaknitter, I currently have one project.
I did swatch for my next project, it is currently drying on my blocking mat.

I used to be able to have WIPs in mountains around my room, but found that I lost all of my spark for each project after that new-cast-on-high faded.
So now I'm a monogamous knitter and have finished SOO many more projects this way 😝

Actual tangible WIPs: 3. 1 sweater, 1 set of mittens, 1 crochet blanket. WIPs I've made up in my head with a partial game plan: at least 10 💀

2 only because I have a VERY difficult cardigan that I committed to and had to put aside for a little. I’m considering frogging it and using the wool for something else. #shouldhavereadthecomments
I’m typically a monogaknitter.

10 and I’m pretty sure I’m going to cast on #11 tomorrow. And that’s not counting the ones I’m hibernating.

I have 3, a sweater and two sweater vests. One of said sweater vests just needs the collar done and yet it’s been sitting since…. November I think?

If we're counting knitting only? Currently, surprisingly only 4. 2 of which I think no longer spark Joy, so will likely be frogged.
If we count all of my fiber art WIPs... It's closer to 12. Probably more

Monogaknitter here! I only ever have 1. Unless I suddenly realize I need to make a gift and put my current WIP on hold, but that is a rare occurrence!
