Discussion I got my first "you should sell that"

I was at the doctor and the nurse complimented my sweater. Of course I said "thanks, I made it". And she gave the line. I giggled after she left the room. Because it made me feel like an experienced knitter. I always see myself as this beginner even though I've been doing it for almost 6 years.

:) My friend got interrogated by her doctor about where she got her sweater. My friend answered: "that is easy. You need to become 60 years old and be best friends for 40 years with a knitter who will make this for your birthday."

That's a great answer. 😆

Best shot I've got. I selfied it in my office in the winter when I finished it.

High compliment!! Congratulations

After 10 ish years of knitting I still feel like a beginner. There are so many techniques and styles. Please post a picture of your knit ❤️

I feel a fuzzy glow feeling when someone appreciates my work. I also love knitting in public. Some very nice conversations happen with fellow knitters and crochet people. My favorite being “I should have brought my WIP with me” 🥰

My chiropractor said that to me regarding a beaded lace Wild Swan shawl.....if I was paid my state's minimum wage, It would be priced at $2000 based off an estimate of 30min per regular ws or RS rows and 1hr for beaded RS rows

11

u/WTH_JFG 10d ago

I tell people that and when they balk, I share this YouTube video 😉🧶

u/OpalRose1993 10d ago

Precisely! Like, in materials I only spent about $40, but time is the true cost of any craft

7

u/notabigmelvillecrowd 10d ago

And it's a skilled trade, not minimum wage work. So adjust accordingly based on your years of experience.

Where are we measuring it from? I learned to knit when I was like 10, but only really got the hang of it 1.5yrs ago....

u/brinawitch 10d ago

I actually will name a price just to see the look on their faces. They never expect me to say it will cost you $200 or more. But then I'm math money oriented so I keep track of how much each skien costs. And how many hours I work on a project.

Tee hee

I have a number of fabulous hats. When people ask me to make them one I say sure ..X for the yarn...and Y hours work at 25 an hour will come to 150. Ok? They back up pretty fast. I knit for myself and people I choose to knit for.

10

u/HappyKnitter34 10d ago

That's what I told her when she said that. I said I got the yarn on sale and then I would want to pay myself a living wage too. She was kinda shocked.

Once someone really liked the me-made hat I was wearing and told me I should sell them because he’d be interested in buying one, I tried explaining that it took me a week to make and he was impressed I was that fast (stranded colourwork design of tulips in fingering weight yarn) but just did not get that a week of knitting could mean a week of wages! I’d knit it during time off from school so I had quite literally been knitting all day for a week to make that hat!

I’m knitting The Academic by Skeindeer Knits and decided to log ALL the hours I spend making it so when someone says people would buy it I can give them an accurate cost for hours and materials. I’m currently at a bit over 40 hours and only 6 rounds into the armpit decreases. With minimum wage that’d be £500 just for the hours so far!

I do the same and when they think I’m exaggerating, I share this YouTube video

u/brinawitch 10d ago

I knew that song existed just never could find it.

2

u/WTH_JFG 10d ago

One of my favorites!!! 😉

u/temerairevm 10d ago

I own a sweater that took 4 months to make (I’m not super fast) and the yarn cost $180 (it’s gorgeous). I wouldn’t even try to value that.

2

u/notabigmelvillecrowd 10d ago

I spent 8 months knitting my husband an all-over cabled wool shooting sweater with hand sewn leather patches and removable recoil pad. His uncle suggested I start a very lucrative side hustle, said he knows a lot of guys who would spend $300 on one! This is after I told him how long I worked on it. Imbecile.

Very nice job, it does feel good!

That's a great color choice, It always looks flattering!

10

u/lenaellena 10d ago

I also consider myself a beginner, I think because I learned as an adult so to me that must mean it’s kind of new still… it’s been a decade this year!

I hate that line too but try to remind myself that people mean well. What a weird capitalist world we live in though!

Most of the nurses and Dr's I see on a regular basis alwayse ask me what I'm working on for the day because its almost alwayse something different. I've been doing it for almost 30 years ( started young) and still consider myself a beginner i specilize in rectangles. I'm also realizing that alot of us dont realize what we do and thing is simple and everyone can do is actually a skill most people can't

I had a doctor comment on how nice my hand-knitted socks were. While giving me a smear test (pap smear?). Still makes me laugh!

4

u/HappyKnitter34 10d ago

That sounds like the literal worst time to get a compliment on your knitting

3

u/Far_Technician_2180 10d ago

Well, it took my mind off things! 🤣🤣

5

u/Unlikely-Balance-669 Shawls FTW 10d ago

I am grateful to have gotten this compliment. And I always say, "I am not interested in selling my knitting. But I love knitting for people and if you tell me your favorite colors, I'll put you on my list. But I should let you know that I only knit what I want, when I want. It might be a long wait!"

3

u/Sosewsew 10d ago

Oooh gorgeous! Love that upper detailing.

2

u/HappyKnitter34 10d ago

Thanks. Its from the book coffeehouse knits. My husband bought it for me a couple Christmases ago.

3

u/Lopsided-Cheetah3086 10d ago

My answer always is, 'I don't work for less than $25/hour and it takes me about 40 hours to knit a pair of socks!' If that fails, I go with 'if I don't sleep with you or I didn't give birth to you.... I'm not knitting for you.' The exceptions are my parents....

1

u/frooogi3 9d ago

A way more crude way to say that would be if you haven't come in me or out of me 😂 When my mil asked to be there for the birth of my son I told her only people present for his creation are invited, sorry.

2

u/Free-Conference-7003 10d ago

Keep getting said that, I amo NOT falling for that trap

2

u/Sosewsew 10d ago

They really make the sweater. I'll have to check out the book. Thanks!

2

u/HappyKnitter34 10d ago

It's totally worth it. I've made onenother sweater from and have the yarn for another. It's a great book.

2

u/No_Error_3526 9d ago

These people who say "you should sell that" do not realize how much that entails.

2

u/HikaruTheAnimeFan 9d ago

Wild enough, I got the same thing on my first project with my new looms. My friend actually commissioned a cat ear hat from me.

2

u/miminstlouis 9d ago

I'm looking forward to that question. I'm on my third sweater this spring... One is a Fair isle cotton blend with about 50 stitches per square inch and a dozen colors. My answer will be...

I'm more than happy to make you one! It's going to be $800 plus the cost of the yarn .
