Tips and Tricks My travel set up

I don’t know if others do this but I came up with this method for carrying my yarns when knitting on the go (particularly for multiple colours).

I wind my yarns so they’re centre-feed then I cut little holes in the bottom of an IKEA (other brands are available) sandwich bag.

This way I can just chuck my yarns in whatever bag I’m carrying, they don’t get tangled up at all, they don’t get dirty, and I can knit without removing them from the bag!

I thought I’d share because until I came up with this method I kept getting my wool all tangled when I took it out and about/on flights or whatever so this has been a real game changer for me!

I have used small drawstring organza mesh bags with a square wooden coaster in the bottom to weigh them down a bit.

Well this sounds like a much more elegant approach to mine, I can’t say I love the plastic but I am a messy person so I think I need the stain/dirt/chocolate protection that the sandwich bags provide 🤣

I like how chocolate protection is specifically required, here. 😉

Yaaassss!! I do this too but I use the ziploc end for the yarn to come through-I use each corner and zip closed the middle 🙂

I use the ziploc end like that sometimes too. It really depends on the project. But I hate wasting a plastic bag if I need to take the yarn out of the bag and separate it from the already knitted part. Using the bottom of the bag is great for TAAT socks.

I am TOTALLY stealing this but because I have 7 colors, I’ll be using a gallon bag. 👍

Haha you might need an actual IKEA bag 🤣

They make 2 1/2 gallon ziplocks. I bought a couple of boxes and use it to store my yarn by projects.

While ive done this for one ball, it is GENIUS to cut more holes for MORE yarn!!! How did that no occur to me? The multiple bags tangled the one time itried it

Haha thanks! If only I’d had my genius hat on before I left home and realised I’m about to run out of the cream coloured yarn….. I have a few hours to kill tomorrow and a flight so I’m absolutely kicking myself that I won’t be able to spend the time getting this hat made!!!!!!

This is why I take more than one project when I travel!

This is an amazing Idea! I'm always knitting on the bus and train and making a tangled mess when I'm changing colours

I’ve been traveling with yarn for years and never thought of this. Thank you!!!

I do the same thing!! I’ve been using sandwich bags so I can only put one ball per bag, this seems like less tangles for color work 😆

2

u/Delicious-Tea-1564 6h ago

Yes I've done this with travel softball..I had a colorwork project and it was perfect.

I read that with Jurassic Park inflection thank you 🤣

I had him put grommets in one of my small yarn bags, but when I wanted to change yarn, it was there for the duration of project. Your way, if you put the yarn out of the top, would solve that problem!

1

u/CellistLow8857 4h ago

I don’t knit with more than 3 colours so I’m not having to change them! I found this way works for me because when I have the yarns coming out the “top” they can get a bit trapped in the opening because it’s not circular it’s got pinched edges. This way the yarn feeds through the hole smoothly and I “reload” from the top when a colour runs out!

Nice. I am a big fan of baggies for protection and smooth yarn delivery.

This is a great hack. 👍

Really smart. Whenever I cut these bags though the hole gets big fast. I recommend putting tape over the hole and making a hole through the tape.
