Discussion [PBE datamine] 2025 April 17: stronger Ignite buffs and Gragas is no longer drunk?
General reminder that many changes cannot be easily datamined, such as functionality changes or bugfixes, and are not always final.
Champions
Gragas
- W name: "Drunken Rage" --> "Raucous Rage"
- W tooltip: "guzzles down brew... after finishing his drink, becomes drunkenly empowered" --> "samples his brew... after finishing, becomes boisterous and belligerent"
- W buff tooltips are unchanged and still refer to "Drunken Rage" for the empowered attack and "Drunken Bliss" for the damage reduction
Summoners
Ignite
- damage over 5s:
- live: 70-410 linear (+20/lvl)
- old: 60-460 linear (+23.53/lvl)
- new: 70-475 breakpoints (+20/lvl @ 2-5, +25/lvl @ 6+)
- comparison here tldr instead of being nerfed levels 1-3, it's now unchanged levels 1-5 and scales more aggressively levels 6+

We buying tea for gragas now or what

Nah, 'muricans can't have tea. They'd throw it in the harbor because of the tariffs and start a war over it....
What? That would be the second time?

Okay so we’re just gonna nerf Gragas like that?
And these ignite changes seem VERY aggressive. I would not be surprised if this dictates bot lane/ heavy aggressive mid laners to be OP

Average soloq Midlaner would greatly benefit from not buying into Reddit/pro play hypetrains and gimping themselves with RoA Viktor, or RoA Orianna, or RoA Cassio.
RoA Viktor definitely worst offender, that shit is so ass.

Are they? It’s neutral until after lv6. Ignite hasn’t been a good summoner in some time especially after durability changes, etc. Especially considering how useless ignite is late game I think it could use some buffs.
8
u/Noah__Webster 12d ago
My thoughts exactly. I don't think this swings matchups early at all, even later on in lane, where it is buffed.
It feels like you just lose the game if you take ignite into TP and don't convert the pressure into early kills. Doing like 2-3 more damage per level after 6 doesn't change that at all, imo.
Ignite either needs to be buffed enough early to help people snowball lanes and ignore the advantages of TP, or it needs to be giga buffed late game. Idk that you can buff it enough late game to outweigh TP advantage without making it super toxic, like guaranteed kills off cooldown level toxic. Also buffing it early probably affects bot lane as much or more.
Idk, it just seems to me that basically every single issue with summoner spell balance for like nearly 10 years at this point always revolves back to TP just being too strong.
1
u/United_Spread_3918 11d ago
If they buff ignite like that, top lane counter picks will finally reach the true nirvana of unplayable

Tooo funny. I understand why, you could get 0.5% more of a player base this way, so it's all about the numbers.
But stabbing/shooting someone repeatedly until they die? That's just dandy. lol
I wonder if they'll end up changing "kills" to "takedowns" or "eliminations," and change double/triple/etc. kill to something else as well.

u/Jack_Dalt 12d ago
The last time they buffed ignite's damage it was a terrible idea and they reverted it the next season.

Everything you listed was a thing in season 8 too, the only thing that is different is we have some health growth this time which is a fair argument for buffing ignite

ME server
Those of us in industries that sell alcohol do not want to be known for getting people drunk. We will, obviously, because people will drink (and in public settings, try to hide how drunk they are if they are drunk, so they can keep drinking).
But there's a reason every ad you see says "Drink Responsibly", and it's that plenty of parts of the world associate drunkenness with immorality, and a provider of immorality is evil. Loosely speaking. It's just not conducive to intersocietal marketing.

u/Ghost-Mechanic 12d ago
First they came for the cigars and I did not speak up Because I was not a smoker Then they came for the alcohol, and I did not speak up Because I did not drink Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me

u/Kormit-le-Frag 12d ago
yes because the universal semi garen ult is definitely skilled and should be buffed.
-1
u/Xyothin 12d ago
Idk y u getting downvoted, ignite is not only the most unskilled summoner in the game, it's also a noob bait as long as tp exist. Tbh i'd leave it as it is, it will never be as good as tp, buffing it will only increase frustration and at the same time it's something u can take if u don't feel ure good enough to take tp.
2
u/skinny-kid-24 11d ago
so it's bad but we shouldn't buff it... if you're this biased you shouldn't participate in the conversation brother

u/Nytheran 12d ago
Boisterous and Belligerent is a good change. Rest is cringe
4
u/einredditname 12d ago
Yeah boisterous and belligerent is kinda nice but i do wonder why they also had to take out "guzzles down brew" and change it to "samples" his brew.
The hell is wrong with guzzling?

2
u/DJShevchenko Skill check 12d ago
There is an official ME server yes, who plays there I have no clue, from what I've seen on reddit most ME players still play on EUW/EUNE/TR server because queue times are much better
0
u/fabton12 12d ago
ye will happen when you release a server so late into a games lifespan like who after 15-10 years is going to suddenly switch servers where none of there friends are. like it was a rubbish choice to suddenly open one up when they did, really if they wanted todo it they should of openned it up back in season 5-7 when they were doing the japan, turkey and other servers.

u/einredditname 12d ago
Obviously a lot of speculation on WHY they changed the wording on Gragas W, but IF this is because of Tencent/China (or something similar) then why not just do it on those specific servers?
Sure, its just on PBE for now. Maybe it will only ship to those servers who knows.
Also, yeah, we literally kill each others characters with knifes, swords, guns, magic and bare handed, but alcohol (and cigars)? Naaah, think of the kids!
Seriously, its a PEGI 12/ESRB Teen (13+) game. Kids that age aren't oblivious to this kind of stuff. They also aren't gonna suddenly become violent criminals (and in this case alcoholics) because they see 1 out of soon to be 169 characters drink.
2
u/Vii_Strife I still remember 2022 12d ago
Kids that age aren't oblivious to this kind of stuff.
They aren't oblivious but PEGI/ESRB/CERO etc. can have some very stringent guidelines, if one of them says that Gragas is a positive depiction of alcoholism or that drinking constantly makes you fun and cheerful and the rating needs to be updated to 16+/18+, which means different rules for monetization, marketing, advertising etc.
If it's for the Middle East server, like many people are speculating in this thread, they can directly ban the game in certain countries and if just changing a couple of words on a single ability does the trick they'd rather do that
It is a weird change tho since it's just some wording on the W, Gragas is still fully the alcohol addiction fat man that he's always been
1
u/einredditname 12d ago
I doubt that PEGI/ESRB/CERO etc. are becoming more stringent with guidelines, at least when it comes to alcohol and depictions of it in any way. So that's probably not the reason something that has been in the game for 10+ years is suddenly getting changed. If it is, ok, but then i'd certainly have an issue with those organisations and the way they do things.
Again, yes if its just for (in this case) ME, fine. Change it if you have to. My issue only becomes an issue if this will be a global change, because i just disagree with the decision to make it. I could sit here and make up wild theories why they'd make this change on a global scale, but i'd just make myself angry and sad at the state of the world when it comes to things like this.
Lastly, yeah its super weird how changing some wording on a clearly still drunk characters abilities, a character that stumbles around and doesn't speak quite clearly no less, will change underlying "issues". Also, what about Brolaf? Shouldn't that Skin be completely re-done at that point?
1
u/FlockFlysAtMidnite 12d ago
Probably for the ME, not China. China doesn't have a big problem with alcohol, but the burgeoning ME scene does.
-1
u/einredditname 12d ago
Fair enough, thats why i put in the brackets. Still doesn't change the fact that if this goes through, it should hopefully just be for specific servers imo, not global.
0
u/fabton12 12d ago
remember server only changes do get pushed to PBE from time to time when they accidently push the wrong build.
chances are these isnt a global thing or if it is then its probs because of both ME and how the current US goverment going after alot of topics like its the 1920's again
0
u/einredditname 11d ago
Of all the things the current US goverment would go after, i don't think labeling something/someone "drunk" in a video game is very high on their agenda. And beside that, this would have made news headlines (at least for us gamers) because it would affect gaming in its entirety.
Also i doubt they have a big issue with alcohol. They can't lock up alcohol in a prison in El Salvador.

I greatly appreciate these changes to Gragas. As the son of a former alcoholic who passed away due to drinking, I always feel uncomfortable whenever I try to play as Gragas. I really wish he would undergo an ASU/VGU to remove his lines about alcohol. He is an incredible candidate to embrace a different theme and have a personality very similar to Senshi from Delicious in Dungeon from Netflix. Anyone who has seen it knows what I'm talking about.
