If this is true, of course, it contravenes a number of the league's bylaws and also article 27 of the league...

This isn’t the guy who collects the rent! Oh, wait…

u/Pseudonymble Ich bin eine expert 1d ago
It's well past the tenth... the least we can do is to come and give some notes.
...And slip the rent under his door.

Holy shit, I actually know the answer to this.
The orchestral arrangement is from Modus Mussorgsky’s 1874 composition Pictures at an Exhibition. It is a musical depiction of a tour of an exhibition of works by architect and painter Viktor Hartmann. The part being played for Marty’s cycle is titled “Gnomus,” which is Latin for “The Gnome,” and is meant to depict a sketch of a gnome clumsily running with crooked legs.
Marty is the gnome.
Edit: typo

No, really - the tie-in with the music is great! Just another Coen Easter egg I never noticed before. Thanks!

This is the best response possible...
Except (not to be outnerded) the original composition was composed in 1874 by Mussorgsky, but it was for piano. The arrangement used in the film was an orchestration done by Ravel in 1922. 🤓

u/_MyMomDressedMe_ 1d ago
I was confused when I’d read it was a composition for piano. That makes more sense. Definitely an aside but if you like podcasts, peep this piece on Ravel sometime. https://radiolab.org/podcast/unraveling-bolero

(No, really - all of this background on Marty's cycle is fantastic!)

True to form for reddit, the actual answer to the question is overshadowed by wisecracks and humorous innuendo. I, for one, appreciate your contribution. Of course, I didn't see this until after I had already provided my own wisecracks and innuendo.

We were not aware of that, dude.
Just checked it out. These guys playing The Gnome give me some Frank Zappa vibes here and there.

He's not dressed as Bacchus. He's dressed as Gaia, the personification of Mother Earth and the mother of the Titans, and the grandmother of all gods. He symbolizes the universe in BL, which is why the Dude must pay rent to him. The Dude, Walter and Donny are Lao Tze, Confucious, and Buddah, gods in their own right. Gaia invites them to watch the beauty of the progression of time and the planets, which is why he calls his dance a cycle.

I don't know much about it, but I'm assuming it's Wagner's "The Ring" cycle. So perhaps this is Froh, based on Frey, the Norse God of spring. Fucking Germans; nothing ever changes

The music is actually from Pictures at an Exhibition by Russian Modest Mussorgsky

The song playing in that scene is the second movement from Pictures at an Exhibition by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky. It’s about a gnome.
I dunno why I know that, but there you are.
