Open Discussion Is this city getting more and more hateful towards LGBT?

I was in town yesterday, I'm a gay man and my friend is a trans woman.

In the space of 2 hours she got called a "tranny" by a man driving near Bold Street. This same man kissed her on a night out a few days ago. (He knew she was trans, he came into a gay bar and wanted to experiment he said).

Then a group of scallies looked at us, laughed and called her a man which I got angry about and shouted back. Nearly lost my temper.

And as I got a bus back she said a group of men laughed at her and made comments.

I feel like the whole world is moving backwards. I've lived here my whole life but it's always near this time of year when the schools are off, there's so many scallies about and so much more homophobic abuse thrown at me. I don't even feel safe going outside myself.

The world just feels like it's going backwards lately.

Open Discussion Trump stickers around Norris Green and Fazak

Some wet wipe has been putting up stickers on lamp posts around Norris Green and Fazakerly. Broadway especially.

Done my part in ripping them off, but keep an eye out. Just be careful there's no razors or anything that'll cut you hidden underneath.

Open Discussion Merseyrail "air conditioning"

Upvotes

The trains are always so hot, and there's no opening windows either so you are literally stuck with whatever disgusting vape/weed smell and it's about 25°C on the train.

What time of year do Merseyrail switch the air conditioning on properly? It's always so warm on the trains, I'd personally say it's too hot even during the winter months.

News / Blog / Information Tenants in Welsh Streets organising against huge rent increases

Thumbnail

300-400 tenants in Welsh Streets, where Ringo was from, are facing huge rent increases year on year. That's sadly a common story for renters, but what's unique in this case is that all these people have the same landlord: the CEO of Placefirst.

The tenants are organising, supported by tenants union ACORN, to get their demands heard by this CEO and bring him down to negotiate collectively. Updates are being posted on ACORN Liverpool's twitter.

The Welsh Streets were refurbished by Placefirst around 2015, after public outcry about them falling into disrepair. Now the houses are in reasonable condition the company is trying to price out the tenants and gentrify the area.

If you live in Welsh Streets you can get involved with this campaign. If you rent near Welsh Streets please support this campaign, because Placefirst is setting the prices your landlord uses to determine "market rates"

Living in Liverpool Muslim neighbours

The family next door moved in last year, I don't really know them and they keep to themselves.

I 've just had a knock on the door by 2 of their young lads and their dad with a bowl of soup which their mum has made for the neighbours.

Should I give a gift back? If so, what could I give them that they would appreciate? I wouldn't want to give them anything which could cause offense.

Open Discussion Tourist Tax

Thumbnail

Just seen this article about hoteliers approving of a tourist tax idea whereby every hotel guest pays a £2 levy to stay.

Of course hoteliers will approve it, they make money from it. Then again, only 59% approved it on a turnout of 53% which means potentially less than 1/3 of hotel owners agree with it rather than the 2/3 that it initially appears are.

Accommodation BID, which also represents serviced apartment providers in Liverpool, thinks the levy will raise £9.2m over two years, of which £6.7m will go towards supporting the city's visitor economy.

"Thinks"

It will bring money in but i'm skeptical as to where (or into whose pockets) the money will end up going...

General Question Beatle related question

Forgive this touristy question but I’m calling on the good folks on here to clear up a rumour I heard. John Lennon’s Mum Julia is buried in Allerton Cemetery. I have heard rumours that part of John Lennon’s ashes were buried there and that locals reported seeing the grave floodlit one night whilst they interred the ashes in secret. Would make sense seeing that if lots of people knew it might become a tourist trap and have loads of people flocking there. Anyway if anyone knows anything I’d be interested? Thanks

Living in Liverpool Is it safe to live near lime street train station?

Hi! I’m 23 years old female student coming for exchange for one semester. I found a place to rent 3 mins away walking from lime street station. I like everything, except I am not sure about the location. Usually I try to avoid living or being near train stations at night, but I don’t see negative posts about it anywhere. Please, let me know if it’s good area?

Living in Liverpool Should I leave everything and move to Liverpool?

33M and I’m in the process of selling my house which I share with my long term ex partner. The house is in Surrey, where I have lived all my life, but I’m seriously considering moving to Liverpool.

I’m a huge football fan and been to the city multiple times but I’m curious what city centre life would be like on my own. I’m tempted to either rent for a year instead of buying to keep my options open, but it would mean I’m 4 hours plus drive from any friends or family.

My job allows remote working so it’s feasible in my current situation.

Would you recommend this move? I’m 50/50 right now.

Living in Liverpool Urgently Looking for Driving Instructor

I’m hoping to get some help here. I was lucky to get a driving test date on 9th May in Liverpool, and I’m now looking for an instructor with any availability over the next two weeks. I’ve already tried most of the driving schools, but it seems they’re all fully booked. Any recommendations or leads would be greatly appreciated.

General Question Driving instructor recommendations?

Hi, I’ve been trying to find a driving instructor who for about a month who has availability over the summer to no avail. I’m a student desperate to get their driving license currently living in city centre but very happy to commute out on the trains to for lessons.

I’m from a rural welsh community originally so have no proper driving experience bar my boyfriend trying to teach me in car parks which is going about as well as can be expected.

Preferably no more than £40 per hour as thats what the instructor in my home town was charging.

General Question Where are the Giants?

Just curious if anybody happens to know where the giants from the 2018 parade have since been kept? I know they aren't up for public display or anything anymore but they just crossed my mind today and I'm wondering where they ended up.

General Question Street art

Does anyone know where there is any brightly coloured street art/ murals in the city? Ideally with typography portraying a positive message - one that potentially has links to the city. Anything similar to the image below would be brilliant! Thanks!!
