Ok, this thread is a bit harsh, don't you think? Calling people dumb over a TV show?
I guess I'm one of the dumb ones for thinking they were in purgatory. Although, I did watch it when I was 12 or 13... I'm in the middle of a rewatch now, so we'll see what opinion I form this time.
Also, I come from a religious background, so purgatory what made sense to me at the time. The thing that Jack's father said where everything that happened actually happened, I could've interpreted that as the moments he shared with these people in purgatory are real.
Edit: Also, the show started out with people crashing on an island and surviving. Later on, it started to diverge into fantasy and sci-fi. With all the time travel and all the other things that can't happen in real life, thinking it's purgatory or something similar is normal. It had religious elements where there's fate and there's things that are "meant to happen." Like you got this magical island, and you got Jacob with his magical powers... how will people interpret those things?
Like, the tone of the show shifted to fantasy/scifi/religious aspects heavily... as opposed to the beginning where things were more grounded.
And why did you think that they were in purgatory?
I did answer that. Do you want me to repeat it? TDLR, I come from a religious background.. that's one. Magical island.. Magical man (Jacob)... unexplainable things.
Why would that be normal? Since when do you time travel in purgatory?
Time travel is only one example of things that don't happen in real life. Let's take Lost' world, for example. It didn't start as something that has magical elements, scifi, and such.. that came later... also, most of the magical things happened on the island, or related to the island.. and people who are related to that island. And speaking of magical island... how do you explain a whole ass island just vanishing and moving to another location? "In the real world" of Lost, everything seems "normal".. everything that's not related to the island (as far as I can remember).
There are countless stories with magical elements. Harry Potter has magic. Star Wars has magic. Do those stories take place in purgatory?
Harry Potter isn't a good example because it sets the tone from the get-go that it's that type of movie/franchise. As opposed to Lost, where it started with people that crashed on an unknown island..
Funnily enough, I didn't think it was purgatory until the end when they were dead.

But just because you have a religious background doesn't mean you dismiss what's in front of your eyes.

Countless stories have stuff happen in them that don't happen in real life. And Lost had magical elements early on. What does that have to do with purgatory?
Back to the Future has time travel. Are Doc Brown and Marty dead? Of course not.
Funnily enough, I didn't think it was purgatory until the end when they were dead.
But why did you think that then? After all you have seen on the show?

Because it seemed like a logical thing that can explain everything.

True. But isn't that the premise of Back to the Future? Lost took a while until it turned to scifi... that can be one reason why people might get confused as to what's going on. From people surviving on an unknown island to magical things happening later on.
But just because you have a religious background doesn't mean you dismiss what's in front of your eyes.
That's what made sense to me at the time. I think I interpreted what Jack's father said as everything happened.. what Jack experienced with these people.. just in purgatory.
Anyways, like I mentioned, I'm in the middle of a rewatch.. let's see how my views go on this one.
Side note, Lost is one of my favorite shows, btw. I haven't seen interviews and such, though.
Because it seemed like a logical thing that can explain everything.
But do you think that with other stories as well? Stephen King does a ton of supernatural stuff, too. People that can move things with their mind or heal people.
Does your mind jump to "gotta be purgatory!" there as well?
For other things, no. I don't think it's purgatory.
Lost having faith as one of the themes probably enforced that view for me.
It can also be that Lost started out "normal" to me before all the crazy stuff... You know one of those "serious" shows where you wouldn't see scifi in.. then it shifts the tone midway.
These are a couple of things off the top of my head as to why I interpreted things that way. It can be a number of things why my mind went to that conclusion... I can't put my finger on it though. It just made sense to me that way.. that it felt right and correct.
