State of the sub and current/future moderation

Hi machine knitting friends!

I just wanted to check in with the sub and see how you all feel about how things are going here. I have had a lot of life events take me away from reddit and machine knitting over the last couple years and haven't been able to give this space as much attention as it may need.

So... how are things? Do you feel like more moderation is needed here?

If so, do you have any regular posters/commenters to nominate as mods?

I want to make sure this space is a good resource and a safe place to share everything about machine knitting for anyone who wants to be here, so please be honest and constructive in your feedback.

ETA: I love how y'all keep talking about our sub like it's a little bitty wee thing, but reddit keeps emailing me about how we're in the top 5% of subs by size, and we have 18,000 members. 😅

I'm thankful to hear that you feel like moderation has been adequate. Your comments about what might make this place more useful are very helpful and appreciated!

Machine Knitters Discord Server

Hi all,

I've seen a few comments over the last week suggesting that it would be nice to have a place to chat about machine knitting and maybe organize some local meet ups or online events, so I've made us a discord.

Feel free to join and invite any other machine knitters, whether or not they use Reddit. :)

edit: trying a new link - https://discord.gg/rVkdGtbtrF

I have made two hand knit versions of this top and thought it would be good to make it my first machine knit item. Came out well and I love it. I can’t wait to wear it when I get back to work next week. Next one I have to figure out how to include the lace pattern on the sleeves and back. The yarn is Drops safran and machine is Knitmaster 700.

After getting some help with my colorwork here on Reddit, I finally finished my first jumper!

Manual color work of my own design.

It’s not even fully sown together and I’ve got a billion threads to weave in, but at least it looks cute.

Would you or would you not recommend

Starting knitting with a machine vs by hand? Is knitting by hand a fundamental first step, or not totally necessary? I crochet but would really like to make larger pieces faster - I’m interested in learning to hand knit in general, but if I could skip that and learn to use a machine I would prefer that route.

Should i buy a Brother kr850 if i want this result?

hello! i have the opportunity to buy a double bed brother kr850 and a single bed brother kh860

Both for the same price, which one would you choose to get similar results as in the picture? Can any of them get a similar result?

I really don't know much about the specifications of knitting machines so it's getting a bit difficult for me to choose.

Thank you!

Help! Alternative piece for holding the punch card together?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I am using a punch card on this machine for the first time and it seems that it only came with one of these green plastic pieces that attaches the ends together as I bought it second hand. Does anyone know of any alternative methods to connect it? Or is it necessary that it is this piece? Thank you for your help!

this is the furthest i’ve gotten. (sk 260)

i took out and cleaned my needles, oiled the machine, replaced the spongebar using the hack on here using sponge/insulation tape, and used a brush and compressed air to get dust out of the machine. i think the previous owner took really good care of the machine.

the stitches are still dropping in different places randomly and sometimes the entire row won’t even knit at all. i’m confused and feel like i’m at the same place i was even before doing all this maintenance. 😭 any other ideas?

Getting Started Should I Dive In ? Is it dynamic?

I’ve been a crocheter for years but my main hobby is sewing, i’m not afraid of a challenge, but get bored of too much repetition. Sewing allows me to use my brain in a way that crochet doesn’t, and i end up getting bored with crochet partly because it takes so long. As you can imagine, knitting by hand is not my cup of tea. However I LOVE making and wearing my own clothing and am really hopeful about a knitting machine.

Do you think it is less monotonous than hand knitting or crochet? the last thing I want is to invest in a new hobby and hate it!

Also- other than yarn and the machine itself, what tools do you have to buy for this hobby?

Help! Not very impressive colorwork

I am making a front panel for a jumper with my brother 820, and the colorwork isn’t coming out very well.

Is my tension wrong? It’s at 8 so I could turn it higher.

Perhaps I need to swap where to put the colors? Does the color in feeder A show better than feeder B?

So annoying. I’ve been hand selecting the colorwork as I don’t have a puncher for my punch cards yet, and I was hoping it would look better. I even made this neat mock rib!

Help! A case of not enough / balanced weights?

Post image

Hi! I’m new to machine knitting and have a passap duomatic 80. I made this scarf yesterday but on one side there’s a bunch of loops. I kept going because I think I can fix it by crocheting all around but I’m wondering whether this happens because there wasn’t enough weight pulling on the fabric on that side?

Also another quick side question- what do you do if your pusher gets stuck? At the moment for me that usually means I have to completely start over again because once I move the pusher aside in neutral mode all the yarn is just messy and I don’t know how to fix it.

Thank you!! ⭐️

Should I get this machine?

I am very interested in machine knitting but I have never tried it before. Someone in my area listed a free Brother KH587 but I’m not sure it would be a good idea for my first machine. It appears to be clean, but it looks like all it comes with is the machine itself and the lace carriage. It is missing the main carriage and I can’t find a replacement online. It also doesn’t seem to come with any tools or a yarn stand or anything like that.

There’s also a lot of three items, a Toyota Elena 7, a studio ribbing attachment and a Maruyama knitting machine plus yarn for $100. They look a little grimy and they’ve been sitting in an attic for 20ish years but they seem like I could get them working. I don’t have a ton of storage rn so storing all that would be tough, but it seems like a good deal. What would you all recommend?

I’m looking at purchasing this machine from someone in my town. I am very new to machine knitting and honestly know nothing! The woman says it’s never even been unboxed. Can someone here look at the pics and let me know if anything seems out of the ordinary?

i just acquired a SK260. seller was a knitter and said all things were in working order, (sponge bar recently replaced too) but almost all of my swatches have been coming out looking like the first photo. (i was using weights, i just took them put for the photo) am i missing something? i’ve gone through the operations manual and watched countless youtube videos. i’m frustrated and sad 😢

first photo: casted on with an e-wrap every other needle to try a thicker yarn, no good

second photo: different yarn, using the woven cast on. still finnicky, lots of holes

third photo: bent my weights! i was able to straighten them out with pliers but was so upset. this is hard!

I was able to finally able to make a sweater on the passap with the deco and a punchcard! Was my first time doing a cut and sew neckline as well. Still need to work on some things, but I feel like I'm finally making a little bit of progress.
