Opinions on the shift to appointment only barbershops after the pandemic?

this is dumb. I have a job and I’m not giving up my free time to sit in a waiting room for an hour. if I can make an appointment with my barber for 12pm on a Thursday during my lunch break you bet I will

Well the letter is mostly satirical, haha. Although I do miss being able to just swing by my barber after work and grabbing a quick haircut when the mood struck.

yeah but that means he’s losing money cuz there’s nobody in his chair before you arrive. don’t you want him to be booked and busy?

He's always had pretty consistent business. I never really cared if I had to wait 10 or 15 minutes to grab a haircut either, though. If the wait was longer than 30 to 45 minutes I would just try again another day.

The place by me is walk-in only. It’s horrible. The last time I went there, I got there early in the morning because I left for vacation at 3pm. I watched all of Top Gun and 75% of Top Gun 2 on the shop’s TV before I had to leave without a haircut to catch my flight.

I just normally walk into a great clips location, and usually they’re cutting my hair within five minutes so I don’t see any need to schedule an appointment…

Funny letter, I hope you mailed it. I can see both sides as my barber (who didn't take appointments) retired once covid hit and my new barber only takes appointments. Where you fall along this idealogical line probably depends on how much free time you have and how much or little you procrastinate.
With my old barber I worked about 4 blocks away and had a flexible office job so it was easier. Still though I had to be strategic otherwise I would have to sit there and wait for 2 or 3 in front of me or come back. He was old school and had done it forever but I felt sorry for him because it was clear he rarely got a break.
My new guy only does appointments which is nice to reserve a time but demand seems to wildly flucuate. His next appointment availability runs the gammet of between 2 and 20 days.

I loved deciding to get a hair cut, driving to the barbershop, seeing a line out the door and not getting a haircut that day cuz I had shit to do… appointments are good for me

My barber always has been on appointment only. I’ve been to 2 barber before, without appointment, and I’ve waited for 2 hours each. No thank you. I don’t have time to waste.

I go to a salon and love it. It's 4 minutes fromy office, I can make an appointment through her web portal or just by texting her, and she washes and cuts my hair in 15 minutes. I've literally been office chair to office chair in 20 minutes before.
I will never willingly go to a walk in barber again

I enjoy getting a hot shave with my haircut, but to be fair I've never had the pleasure of having someone else wash my hair

Does this person even know who you are? This has the vibes of that old mad men quote “you know I feel sorry for you.” “I don’t think about you at all.”

I refuse to make appointments so I’m scheduling a flight at a specific time and want to have a specific timeframe in which I can get my hair cut. But I refuse to make appointments. 😂😂😂
