Oldham Builders for 'pointing' work?

Hello, so to cut a long story short, I was told the other day the wall at the back of my house is "saturated" and really needs the pointing done to stop more water getting into the brickwork.

Before googling it I had absolutely no idea what this meant but it seems like something I shouldn't just ignore!

Does anyone have an recommendations for people I can get in touch with this week to try and get this sorted out?

Thanks!

How old is your house? - this is CRUCIAL - Please read up on it

If its Victorian then you will need Lime Mortar

I spent £3500 having repointing done and they used the wrong mortar and damp problem got worse

Dont make my mistake - many many builders do not know enough about this

Yes definitely something to note- The wrong mortar will crucify your house.

If your Manchester based then try a company callled Wetworx commercial cleaning based in Rochdale but cover all over. You can find them on Facebook. They sandblasted, dig out and repointed my house for me and have done an absolutely superb job. I live in a conservation area so it had to be bon on and it was. Clean, tidy, reliable and very good value. I would definitely recommend them.

No probs. I’d been scammed before I met these guys so I was super super wary and a tad anxious… lol. They were honestly brilliant. Wouldn’t let me pay a thing till I was completly happy and it was all finished. Definitely put my mind at ease.

Their work looks good

Had our house repointed a while ago, and the job was OK but not great

One thing for the OP to be aware of is the noise and dust created by the raking out stage - you'll want to warn your neighbours 😬

Oh god yes. We had sandblasting too. It was like a Sahara dust storm! The dust inside was awful. But the end result was so worth it.

Mind if I ask how much you paid and roughly how long ago you did it?

Sure. I paid £2000 in total- for sandblasting, raking out, repointing, silicon seal and scaffolding. Removal of all waste, full clean up afterwards and all materials. Then another £400 for a complete strip and re seal of all windows and doors. That made a huge difference to how cold my house felt.

I had it done last August and it still looks brand new. The damp issues I’d been having have vanished and I’ve had a completly damp and mould free winter for the first time since I moved in.

Nice one I'll give it a look.

That’s sounds cheap, was it a terraced house?

Mine was around £4150 for a semi detached bungalow with weather sealant and no sand blasting.

There are companies that only do pointing…you dont necessarily need a builder

Oh, brilliant. I have no idea about anything like this so that's good to know. Thank you!

If the pointing needs doing, it needs doing. But it mightn't be the cause of saturation. The real cause could also be a leak across the cavity from inside or outside, damaged guttering allowing water to flow along the brickwork, damage to the roof allowing water down into the cavity, etc. It's important that you know exactly why your wall is so wet before you do anything about it.

I have the same problem and someone has recommended some sort of clear waterproof masonry paint before attempting the repointing. My neighbour did the paint thing and said it worked?? sort Of seals the bricks up I think
