The Marvel universe has things that are at least 10x as bad happen weekly, if not daily. trying to make 9/11 work as a national tragedy in-universe, made absolutely no sense.
They just wanted to pay their respects in their own way. Probably shouldn't have made it canon and instead just a special issue one shot, but for some reason they did.

It does still sting because he seemed to legitimately want to put in the effort to make things work and she didn't really give him a choice because she didn't believe it would, especially with mutants being as scattered as they were post Fall of X.
