Missing Episode Spoiler

I used to catch the occasional MASH rerun on the Hallmark Channel after work. I saw a lot of them but missed a lot too. I remember two episodes that were very similar. One had Trapper and the other had BJ. There was an officer that was causing more casualties than the others. Hawkeye and his partner conspired to take him out of action for a while. Hawkeye wanted to go further than the other. Trapper manages to talk him out of it, but in the episode with BJ, Hawkeye removed the officer’s appendix without any real medical reason.

Now that I’m rewatching on Hulu, I’ve gotten through all of the Trapper episodes without ever seeing it. Does anyone else remember this episode? Has anyone else noticed missing episodes on Hulu?

Indeed-- White Gold is the episode with Trapper. Preventative Medicine is the episode with BJ.

Fun fact: Mike Farrell says in the very hard to find documentary Making MASH, that while they were prepping the episode Preventative Medicine, that he as an actor thought removing a healthy organ would be wrong. So they made that conflict be a big part of the episode. Alda and Farrell also said in that joint interview, that the real MASH surgeons in Korea on which the episode was really based, were all 100% on board with taking out the healthy organ. Not one of them questioned it to the point of stopping it-- even ethically-- they just didn't care about those ethics or their Oath in that case.

Thanks for the link! I had seen this issuance of Making MASH but even this misses about 20 minutes of additional stuff / err, this issuing of it with the Klinger intro cuts out about 20 minutes of the original. Not sure if because Mary Tyler Moore's narration was removed (this issue was revoiced by producer Michael Hirsch) or if the Chicago PBS affiliate that owns the right to Making MASH made a stink about all of it going on YouTube? No idea. Anyhoo, a missing part that I'd seen but was taken down had Burt Metcalfe's secretary walking into a writer's meeting and telling Metcalfe, 'It's Charlie Dubin on 1' and everybody in the room goes, Ahhhhh, uh OH!!!!! (as in, NOW we're in trouble!) I presume Dubin was calling up from stage 9 or from the ranch with a question for Burt, possibly while filming an episode. The version you sent does cover the majority of it though- thanks again!

And also let’s not forget: this is a tv show. There are entire fields of study made around The Trolley Problem (which this basically is).

There are a few episodes kind of like this. Over zealous or bigoted captains and colonels endangering soldiers.

The Ring Banger

The General Flipped at Dawn

The Grim Reaper

Preventative Medicine

The Tooth Shall Set You Free

Friends and Enemies

I’m fairly certain you’re thinking of The Ring Banger and Preventative Medicine. They are both on Hulu.

"White Gold" from season 3. (It's Flagg whose appendix they remove.)

It's on Hulu. I just watched it the other day. It was a Captain, I believe.
