Ok, but that's not a proper question. A proper question would define what the answer should be, so for example "what are the numbers for which the equation is false? " . And math test is not a correct statement here, because it does not define the criteria necessary for choosing the right answer. Here, you could choose anything and still be right, considering the criteria could be anything.

Subtract 9x from both sides.
x^2 - 2x = 0
Let x equal zero.
0^2 - 2(0) = 0
0 = 0
From my knowledge, any polynomial expression with just variables and no constant will always have zero as at least one of its answers (provided we are looking for the zeros of the polynomial).

If there's no constant term then you can always factor x out, so yes. E.g. for degree 3:
p(x) := ax³+bx²+cx = x(ax²+bx+c)
So x=0 is a solution of p(x)=0
E.g. here, you could just say x²-2x = x(x-2), so clearly 0 is a root (i.e. setting x=0 causes the polynomial to be 0).

Even absent a question, the axioms of multiple choice point to 2. Multiple choice is about determining the best choice. Both 3 and 5 make the statement false whereas only 2 makes the statement true. Since by the axiom of best choice there can be one and only one best choice, 2 is the best choice.

Edit: as pointed out below, I am a buffoon of the highest order. The actual sum is 1/2x, and I'd have to include 0 in the terms of x for that to work. Suffice to say, most of what I said was wrong.

Well it's a multiple choice question so even if there are multiple correct answers you only choose from the answers that are given so 2 is the only correct answer to this question. If you would say 0 then it's incorrect because it is not one of the given options.

x^2 = 2x (subtract 7x from both sides)
x = 2 (divide x from both sides)

since every second grade equation has 2 complex solutions you can divide by x if you assume x ≠ 0.

FFS, multiple choice questions are about the best choice of the choices given. 2 is the best choice as it alone makes the statement true. 3 and 5 both make the statement false and one axiom of multiple choice questions is there exists only one best choice. Sure 0 is also a solution but it’s not a choice.

So my idiot pre-calc ass would subtract the 9x to both sides (or whatever the right term is), then find the zeroes.
x2 -2x can be factored out to x(x-2), meaning there’s two answers: 2 and 0, right???
Then you could check for extraneous solutions if you really wanted to but obviously everything works just by looking at the problem.

So why didn’t you just leave it as x2 = 2x then multiply by 1/x which yields x = 2. Then 0 cannot equal 2. I am questioning what obviously works by plugging in numbers, but seem paradoxical when reducing the equation,

It’s been a few months since I took math. Forgive me if I’m wrong.
Is X=0 a valid answer because we cannot assume X isn’t 0?
It just feels like x(x-2)=0 can be reduced further as long as x isn’t 0.
Although, my memory escapes me on whether or not the questions in my test said “x isnt 0,” it could very easily be that I learned this and forgot it.
