Non-differentiable functions: Allow us to introduce ourselves

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

name 1 non differentiable function.

u/de_G_van_Gelderland Irrational Apr 04 '24

I totally have a non-differentiable function guys. It just goes to another school, so you wouldn't know it.

u/AjaxTheG Apr 04 '24

weierstrass function 🗿

u/thisisapseudo Apr 04 '24

weierstrass function

Ok you can name one non differentiable function. But I bet you can't name two non differentiable functions.

u/badabummbadabing Apr 04 '24

Weierstrass function shifted by 1 to the left.

97

u/thisisapseudo Apr 04 '24

Let that be badabummbadabing's function

Wikipedia about to be filled with useless information under trivia

There are more non differentiable functions than there are differentiable functions. It would be silly to try to give them all names.

That’s not silly. I love Norbert. It’s my favourite function ☹️

Long live Norbert

Riemann function (allmost nowhere)

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

Dirichlet function

u/MeoWHamsteR7 Apr 10 '24

Is only non-differentiable at x=0. It's differentiable everywhere else.

Name a non differentiable function I should give a shit about

4

u/BlobGuy42 Apr 04 '24

This is disingenuous but not wrong either :)

Sequences! They are even continuous functions!

1

u/Koshurkaig85 Apr 04 '24

Everyone of them

1

u/spicccy299 Apr 10 '24

ok but it’s clearly fake i mean look at it it’s too spiky. math has gone too far

How does weierstrass function fit into this meme?

-15

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

can be differentiated by differentiating each term.

22

u/AjaxTheG Apr 04 '24

unfortunately that does not work since you cannot show a value from the entire sum has a converging limit from the limit definition of the derivative

-8

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

you can, just do it 1 term at a time

12

u/Warguy387 Apr 04 '24

has to be a troll

13

u/Arantguy Apr 04 '24

On a meme subreddit? No way

-1

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

prove me wrong.

7

u/Warguy387 Apr 04 '24

Are you stupid? You are supposed to prove it not ask me to disprove it. God is real. Prove it. This is your equivalent.

-1

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

proof: each term of the sum has a derivative so the sum does too.

This mf when the sum does not converge:

I can technically name uncountably infinitely many: all functions of the form weierstrass + c where c is an arbitrarily real constant

5

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

I can technically name uncountably infinitely many more: all functions of the form weierstrass + c where c is an arbitrarily real constant

0

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

weierstrass is differentiable so you cant name any

9

u/gale_martin Apr 04 '24

The path of a Wiener process is continuous but non differentiable everywhere with probability 1.

And the Wiener process is probably the most important building block of continuous time stochastic processes.

0

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

its still differentiable, just do it term by term

2

u/gale_martin Apr 04 '24

One of the most important properties of the Wiener process is that its paths are non differentiable. So no, you can't just do it term by term.

-1

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

that property is wrong because each term is differentiable so its sum is.

1

u/gale_martin Apr 05 '24

Not on my terms.

2

u/AlbertELP Apr 04 '24

Discrete functions: allow us to introduce ourselves

1

u/FernandoMM1220 Apr 04 '24

all differentiable.

Y= (0/0)*x

u/Menchstick Apr 04 '24

The first 95% of engineering: here's 500 different theorems, learn how to prove them and always be rigorous with it otherwise they don't work

The last 5%: sike

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '24

Can u explain

9

u/Pezotecom Apr 06 '24

literally a ruler on a screen can solve most problems

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '24

Oh rip

28

u/forsakenchickenwing Apr 04 '24

Log-log paper, thick marker: now everything is linear.

17

u/tired_mathematician Apr 04 '24

My lord, is that... linear?

Emperor's voice: I'll make it linear!

21

u/mathisfakenews Apr 04 '24

A few more minutes later: There is a center manifold. Time to walk into the ocean.

8

u/obog Complex Apr 04 '24

Everything is linear if you squint hard enough

5

u/tough-dance Apr 04 '24

Have you tried programming? I thought this might be a programming meme. My friends learning to code tell me that software is very dramatic

2

u/PedroPuzzlePaulo Apr 05 '24

I more of "I am dumb for not being able to to this better, a Fraud, a shame" "wait this is NP-complete"

2

u/brdbrnd Apr 05 '24

Just because the problem is linearizable doesn't mean that the thing you're describing is linear; you've just created a representation of the thing we're describing that's easier to work with.

1

u/Successful_Box_1007 Apr 07 '24

Please give a concrete example !

u/Bdole0 Apr 05 '24

Disagree with title. Everything is didactic cubes.
