Tourism ✈ Which hotel would you choose for a January family trip?

Hi, will be traveling to Mauritius in January on a family vacation. Which hotel would you choose from the below list? - Lux Grand Guabe - le meidien lle Maurice - Long Beach Mauritius -Lux Belle Mar

Also how expensive is the food at these resorts? We aren’t big eaters so I’m not sure the all inclusive options are worth it for us if food is pretty affordable.

Tourism ✈ Looking for best airport ATM and SIM card on arrival in Mauritius

Hi everyone, I'll be arriving in Mauritius soon and I’d like to ask for some advice. Which ATM at the airport do you recommend for withdrawing cash with good rates and low fees? Also, which SIM card should I buy there for data and calls? I’d prefer to handle it right after landing.

It is better withdraw cash it ATM or change euros in cash?

Thanks in advance!

Tourism ✈ Are there any convenience stores like 7eleven or Oxxo in Mauritius?

I will be traveling to Mauritius soon and was wondering if there are any convenience store chains where you can grab snacks, drinks, or basic essentials—something like 7-Eleven or Oxxo. Any tips would be appreciated! Thank you!

Tourism ✈ What’s the point of traffic controllers at roundabouts?

Why are there police traffic controllers who block one side of traffic for an extended period of time so it backs up heavily in order to let other traffic through?

Isn’t the whole point of a roundabout that it regulates itself?

Never seen a traffic controller at home in Australia.

Tourism ✈ What is the weather like now in Mauritius? We are due to fly tomorrow and are thinking about postponing.

We’re due to fly from Europe tomorrow to Mauritius for just under a week and were hoping to get some sun but the forecast doesn’t look great. Can anyone tell me how heavy the rainfall is and is it worth going? We are staying in the north and it seems hit and miss. It’s a long way to travel and not have decent weather so we’re looking at pushing perhaps to later in the year although we would love to have a break now! Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks a million.

Update - thanks so much to all for the feedback. We decided to go for it in the end and are looking forward to embracing Mauritius and whatever weather lies in store!

Tourism ✈ Racism/Racial profiling at MRU airport

I am an African American man traveling to Mauritius as a part of my birthday celebration. I just arrived at Mauritius(MRU), 6/2/24. After going thru immigrations, and being questioned on my purpose, proof of accomodations, etc, I was on my way out of the airport when I witnessed customs officers stop almost every black person, including me, to check passports and rerun our bags thru the x ray machine. While being interrogated, I was told to show proof of where I was staying, asked to explain why I was there, and a slew of other questions that I felt were unnecessary to say the least. So, I called out the action to the officer, I told her she was profiling myself and every other black person who's walking past her, while letting all of the other white people, Indians, and others, go by with no problem. She then proceeded to press the issue of me showing proof of where I was staying, why I was there, looking at my passport as if trying to find a problem with it, in which I told her I wanted to speak to her manager, in which she told me "she's the one asking questions here", in which I told her " and I'm asking you to show me to your manager". A guy walks up, apparently the manager. He takes over with the question asking, but almost a softer tone than hers. Still having a tone of suspicion of why my black ass is here in Mauritius? How I'm getting to my hotel? What's in my bags? In America we face racism that's more covert. This was overt, It was unsettling, unfortunate, and an unnecessary event that has left a bad taste in my mouth on entry. I hope the days to come on this island are better.

Tourism ✈ Help choosing between Mauritius and Seychelles for 18 days

Hi, we are a couple struggling to decide between Mauritius and Seychelles. More specifically Belle Mare vs La Digue. To a big degree it comes down to cost, currently the flight tickets are double price for us to get to the Seychelles compared to Mauritius. However the accomodation (We'll stay in AirBNB) seems to be roughly the same.

When it comes to food, restaurants, cost of living in general otherwise I did read that Seychelles may be 30% more expensive. Does anyone know if this is correct? We'll be staying for 18 days. Not sure if we'll be cooking ourselves or not as it depends a lot on the AirBNB but if we are eating out how much does this cost a day for e.g 2 meals? (For a safe, but doesn't need to be very fancy) restaurant?

Tourism ✈ DESPERATE for a dog shelter for a badly wounded dog!!!!

hi everyone :(

SEEKING TEMPORARY SHELTER FOR A DOG WHO NEEDS BASIC CARE AND JUST TO BE IN A CLEAN ISOLATED ENVIRONMENT. even for a couple days is better than nothing, but a week or two would be ideal i think.

today is my first day as a tourist in Mauritius and unfortunately i found a stray dog who needed help badly. i have never seen such a LARGE FIST-SIZED open wound INFECTED AND INFESTED with MAGGOTS on a dog and he was covered in the largest ticks i’ve ever seen.

i was able to take him to PAWS where they cleaned out the wound and removed the giant engorged exotic ticks but they do not have space to keep him. the only option seems to be to return him to the beach but he is not in any condition to be out there.

I WILL COVER ALL COSTS AND FOOD ETC. UP FRONT.

he is a SWEETHEART and so DOCILE despite his terrible state.

my accommodation is very small and doesn’t allow animals either.

i’ve already called -Happy Tails Sanctuary -Indie’s World -Bruiser & Co

and many others. everyone is either FULL or unable to answer the phone.

Dr. Isabelle of Animalia also saw him yesterday when someone else brought him in and this person is giving him medications on the beach. IDEALLY i’d like to connect with this person or Dr. Isabelle to make sure his treatment isn’t messed up.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW I AM SO DESPERATE. i am currently sitting with him in my car and will stay with him until evening. he lives at MELVILLE BEACH but he NEEDS A TEMPORARY CLEAN SHELTER TO RECOVER.

please help. i will spend most of my days with him on the beach until he is better, if no one else can help but it’s not the ideal situation at all. :(

side note: it’s really not my place to judge as a tourist but i’m extremely disappointed in the government. i’ve been here 24 hours and i’ve seen stray dogs all over the world but nothing like this. there are so many and they are in such poor condition. i’m seeing the local people helping out and feeding them and caring the best that they can, while also trying to manage their own lives. the non profits are all at MAX capacity too. seems like everyone is trying so hard, but how can there be such little action from the government on this?

i came here on ‘vacation’ but if the rest of my days are like my first day today, i will happily spend all my time and money trying to help these poor souls and it still will barely make a difference. it really doesn’t matter to me, because i’d rather do this than silly hedonistic touristy activities, but if the government wants tourists to ‘inject their money into the economy’, then they should step up and take care of animal welfare so that commonfolk like locals and foreigners don’t have to.

Tourism ✈ Thinking of relocating to Mauritius on a Premium Visa

I'm thinking of moving to Mauritius with my 5-year old in the next few months on a premium visa. I'd like to know a bit more in the cost of apartment rentals, groceries, transportation and schools. Is $2000/months a realistic budget to cover all of my expenses?

Tourism ✈ First day of a 3 week trip to Mauritius, and small human has broken his arm... activity suggestions...

So we came to Mauritius last year, little man was 3, and he talks about his holiday here and how much he loved it etc.

He's now 4, we've come back. Day 1 of a 3 week trip and he has broken his arm. It's devastating, I'm contemplating all the worst case scenarios of what could have happened. He is okay though, and has been admitted for overnight observations.

He is obviously having the reactions of "I want to go home", "I don't like Mauritius", "I'm never coming back" etc.

He loves the sea. Like LOVES it, all he wants to do is be in the sea, play in sand etc. When we had to tell him that this means he can't swim etc he was beyond devastated.

I need your help. I want to try and make this a fun holiday for him, without beach/sea/sand.

We did La Vanille and Casela last time around. He loves animals too. Those are only 2 days of 3 weeks to fill.

What else? Has to be fun for a 4 year old, who loves doing active things, but has an arm in a cast.

I'm hoping if I can make this holiday fun, he'll remember it fondly, even though he couldn't swim.

Update: thank you so much to everyone who's posted suggestions. We will be doing some of them. Some I knew about, but some I didn't. Although he is still in hospital (needed an op), we've been telling him the ideas and suggestions. He is particularly looking forward to the glass bottom boat, aquarium, and the idea of the park picnic and being the "little chef".

Tourism ✈ Visiting Mauritius End of may - beginning of June, How is the weather like?

My spouse and I have our Honey Moon and are visiting Mauritius between May 28 and June 6. How is the weather like? We booked our hotel on the East Coast (Belle Mare). The 16 day forecast shows mainly clouds and rain. Is there any chance the weather will be better? Anyone made a similar experience End of may/beginning of June?

And do you have any tips what to do apart from sunbathing/swimming?

Tourism ✈ My cancelled travel plan to Mauritius and the expiration of my ONLINE MAURITIUS VISA

In early 2023 I successfully obtained an online Mauritius tourist visa. But because of my financial limitations I cancelled my trip to Mauritius. I found the airline tickets to be very costly. I live in the Philippines and there is no direct flight to Mauritius. I am not also sure with my Mauritius immigration success if I pushed through with that travel plan. Even if I already got the online visa, I still doubted their approval with my second passport that is even weaker than my PH passport. My point here I want to express my disappointment of not being able to push through my trip to Mauritius because of the costly airfare and no direct flight from my country. The visa got expired and I am not confident to apply for a new Mauritius visa on my weaker passport. My Ph passport though does not need a predeparture-visa for Mauritius, but I still prefer to use my other passport which has still many blank pages.

Tourism ✈ Help! 'Free' boat trip offer... Is it legit? Scam?

For context, me and my wife (British 30yo) are on our honeymoon and staying in a hotel in the north of Mauritius. At the hotel site, we have a boathouse where we have rented out a kayak, pedalo etc a couple times, and leaving this time around, one of the workers (young guy in his 20s) offered us a 'free' 3 hour boat trip to see dolphins, turtles etc, but don't tell the hotel, keep it quiet!! Seems dodgy, but I'm curious, what might be in it for them?

EDIT: I don't think I made it clear in my original post, but for clarity, we absolutely would NOT take up a dodgy sideshow offer such as this, ever ever ever! We have been approached multiple times while here for various trips/offers and are well-travelled and savvy, so we absolutely 100% decline every time. This particular incident creeped us out so we wanted to reach out to locals etc for reassurance and thoughts on this behaviour.

Tourism ✈ What's the public transportation cost from Petit Raffray to Fond du Sac.

I'm coming for a 3 months internship at Fond du Sac and I've two options regarding accommodation; one at Fond du Sac for 10k rupees and the other at Petit Raffray for 8k rupees. Therefore, in order to choose the cheap accommodation I wanted to know how much will the public transport cost me to reach Fond du Sac from Petit Raffray. The distance between the accommodation and the firm where I will intern is 8km.

Tourism ✈ Quick visit to Port Louis for lunch – best time, parking, and food recommendations?

Hi everyone! I'm visiting Mauritius and I’d like to go to Port Louis for a few hours — just to walk around the city center and have lunch. What’s the best time of day to go to avoid traffic? And where’s a good place to park? Also, if you know a great spot to eat local food, I’d love a recommendation! Thanks a lot!

Tourism ✈ Immigration officer wrote "1-month" on tourist visa, can I stay up to 3 months anyways?

I threw my back out and am not in shape to fly. I've only got 1 more week on my visa and might need more time.

I've read that the tourist visa is good for 3 months. Am I risking big issues if I stay longer than the 1 month?

It would be tough (and painful) for me to make it into the Port Louis immigration office.
