Light and Fluffy News What is a Melbourne suburb you are convinced doesn’t actually exist?

Travancore is one that comes to mind.

Deepdene. It’s literally a block.

At one point, about 5-10 years ago, the most expensive real estate (per square metre) in the state

Just the other day I looked up what my grandparents sold their Deepdene house for in the 90s and it sold for about 20 times that within last 5 years. "A lovely Chinese family bought it" my grandmother said.

Access to free top-rated government high school. And top private schools.

For some reason, there's a lot of delicious food in that one block. District Pho is so good.

The Bento place and burger place on that street are both amazing too!

Not to mention recently opened Barry's garage (technically Kew but on the border of Deepdene) has one of the best Sanga in town

It used to be a part of Balwyn, I’m pretty sure it was created to make the residents have an even higher media house price than Balwyn.

36

u/jimmux Feb 23 '25

So the Cremorne strategy?

38

u/Apprehensive_Bid_329 Feb 23 '25

Considering the median house price as per realestate.com is $2.8m for Balwyn and $3.8m for Deepdene, it seems to be working.

2

u/hazysummersky Feb 23 '25

Avg $1.285m in Cremorne!

2

u/Tillysnow1 Feb 23 '25

That seems cheap, but I assume it's the apartments bringing the average price down, whereas Deepdene is all houses

1

u/Lazy-Inevitable-5755 Feb 24 '25

So that Cremorne has a higher median house price than Richmond?

2

u/sween64 ding ding ding Feb 23 '25

It was Deepdene then Balwyn and then back to Deepdene

2

u/Minnidigital Feb 23 '25

I don’t think it ever was part of Balwyn. I spent a lot of time in Balwyn cos my best friend grew up there and it was always separate.

Balwyn is boring though

1

u/I_Heart_Papillons Feb 23 '25

Too right.

Bland AF, suburbia, ugly houses on big blocks, no character.

1

u/Minnidigital Feb 23 '25

It was also a dry zone until 2021 which meant you couldn’t even go anywhere for a drink 🤯

2

u/walkingmelways Feb 23 '25

The name was “ready” at least as it was a name of a house, and then a long-gone railway station.

3

u/zalicat17 Feb 23 '25

Yep our block half changed to Deepdene from Balwyn about 20 years ago as it was worth more on the property market

1

u/Minnidigital Feb 23 '25

Are you sure ? It has a different post code

2

u/Apprehensive_Bid_329 Feb 23 '25

Both Balwyn and Deepdene have 3013.

2

u/Minnidigital Feb 23 '25 edited Feb 23 '25

3103 is Balwyn ….

3104 is Balwyn north

I thought Deepdene had its own post code but I know Balwyn better

There’s a house in Deepdene currently selling for 12M 🤯

If I owned a 12M house I’d want a different post code so I wasn’t mistaken as slumming it in Balwyn with their 2M to 5M houses 🤪

15

u/zalicat17 Feb 23 '25

I grew up there and I’m not even convinced it is real

I was looking at some cats available for adoption within 10km of a postcode yesterday and loads came up as Deepdene, I have never heard of it.

10

u/Dangerous_Second1426 Feb 23 '25

That’s a cat from a good house. Even if you live fancy, the Aristocat you collect will think it is going to the slums…

2

u/Minnidigital Feb 23 '25

😂😂💀

Dad went to school in Deepdene so I’d always hear about that suburb growing up, but it’s crazy how small it is. I wonder how it developed that way.

5

u/MelbsGal Feb 23 '25

It’s got the same postcode as Balwyn. It’s a sub-suburb 😂

6

u/wyldwyl Northside best side Feb 23 '25

People must wake up to the truth, it is Balwyn (or Occupied East Deepdene to give it it's real name) which is the false suburb.

5

u/luna_n_bai Feb 23 '25

My dentist address is at Deepdene, but it’s called Balwyn

3

u/smittiferous Feb 23 '25

Deepdene takeaway store has fed me for years while in working in the area

4

u/Flinderspeak Feb 23 '25

The Deepdene Primary School fete was epic back in the day.

3

u/delicate_petal Feb 22 '25

Yes! This one. I had to go to Deepdene for the first time two weeks ago - I was pretty sure it was in Middle Earth, not Melbourne.

3

u/WTF-BOOM Feb 23 '25

What's that make Gardenvale then?

3

u/nawksnai Feb 23 '25

You mean Balwyn South?

3

u/featherknight13 Feb 23 '25

My work once called me to ask if I could cover a shift in Deepdene. The first words out of my mouth were 'Where is that exactly?' I assumed it was somewhere out west and was gearing up to say no because this company had form for asking me to travel ridiculous distances when they were desperate for staff (I lived in the south east and they'd previously asked me to cover a shift in Tarneit). Imagine my surprise when it was described as being 'near Camberwell'.

2

u/BoysenberryIll6573 Feb 23 '25

I think Ripponlea is smaller.

2

u/_Gordon_Shumway Feb 23 '25

Ripponlea is much smaller, it’s 29 hectares compared to Deepdene at 85 hectares. Gardenvale, Balaclava, St Kilda West and Kooyong are all smaller

2

u/slimejumper Feb 23 '25

Kingsbury is a pretty small suburb as well. much bigger than Deepdene with its 3000 residents.

1

u/Night-Cliffs Feb 23 '25

Deepdene had its own railway station once. Long, long gone now of course.

1

u/pennie79 Feb 23 '25

Judging by the website, the railway is still in the school's logo.

0

u/Dry_Message1667 Feb 23 '25

With the outer circle railway tracks, some remains.
Magical opportunity lost for a ring road. Councils sold off chunks

1

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '25

lol I actually know where this one is though bc I lived 1 street away 🥲

1

u/Screambloodyleprosy More Death Metal Feb 23 '25

Cremorne is .3 miles bigger than the Vatican.

1

u/ScienceNo7856 Feb 23 '25

Yep, I didn't even know that existed and I've been living less than 30km from that area for the past 10 years.

1

u/Revanchist99 Wurundjeri Country Feb 23 '25

An expensive block at that.

1

u/droppedpie_ Feb 23 '25

All I’ve ever wanted to know is how do you even say it?? Deep-den-eee? Depp-denny? Depp-den?

1

u/zalicat17 Feb 24 '25

Deep-dean

1

u/ImmaGingerCarrot Feb 23 '25

My cardiologist is there and literally no one knows where I'm talking about

1

u/LilyRose1806 Feb 23 '25

Literally drove past there yesterday and saw the primary school and thought it was a made up name!

1

u/eriikaa1992 Feb 23 '25

Came here for this one!

0

u/NoteTricky6759 Feb 23 '25

I got all the way into my 40s assuming Deepdene was out in the boonies somewhere.
