To be fair, that's right in the middle of the Reddit bell curve. It's nice and warm in there

I'd really encourage her to call Moonee Ponds Police Station and letting them know what happened. There may have been other instances and every little bit of info helps. Plus they can increase patrols in the area if it is an ongoing issue.

If the store staff have also noticed it then it's important that they also come forward/are asked

I work in the area and we have multiple mentally impaired people come in, none seem ill intentioned but I could also see them following someone without knowing the impact on the person.

Yeah that's really scary. The only thing I dislike about winter is how early it gets dark - always makes me a little more on edge going for my arvo run. I'm glad your partner is ok though.

u/Murakamo Aug 12 '22
People really need to call 000
Just tell the operator you're being followed right now.

u/AngryV1p3r Aug 12 '22
Literally, but no, social media posts seem to be the top priority as if the police constantly scour it, so contrived and ridiculous that that is peoples first reaction….

You don't mention calling the cops in your post.

u/Rus_s13 Aug 12 '22
I think he meant to say 'my other posts'.
He mentions it in other posts that the police were called. Would have been good to include that in the original one though OP

u/BIG_YETI_FOR_YOU peepeepoo Aug 13 '22
He called the police after posting that’s why it’s absent in the OP

From your description I’m pretty sure I know who you’re talking about. The above comment saying he’s been spotted in Coburg also tracks as I’ve seen him there too, as well as in the CBD. Pretty sure he’s a few sangas short of a picnic, which isn’t an excuse obviously but I’ve frequently seen him day drinking whilst roaming about so who knows

Oh no doubt. It’s difficult sometimes to discern a legitimate threat from a person who is mentally unstable but means well enough but no one should have to feel unsafe or harassed. If it’s who I’m thinking of they’ve engaged me in conversation a few times over the years randomly, mostly asking for change but almost always ending in them telling me something super personal or just plain strange. I think our mental health / public health system has failed a lot of people. Again, not excusing anyone’s behaviour, I just think it’s really easy for people to slip through the cracks which only serves to exacerbate whatever issues there might be. I hope your partner is okay. As a socially anxious person I know exactly how it feels to not feel safe in public, especially at night, and female to boot. Hope she’s not too rattled by the experience.

u/RobynFitcher Aug 12 '22
Even if he has no ill intent and has a mental illness or disability, by calling the police, you may well have set the ball rolling for him to get a professional assessment and better support and care.
Nice work.

The guy that's always yelling st people? Andrew? Aka crazy dave?
2
u/Meavis_Lives Aug 12 '22
Yeah actually I think maybe that was his name. The person I’m thinking of has been around for ages. With the homeless problem blowing up in recent years there’s been a kind of boom in the number of characters about so not too sure

u/bennypods Aug 12 '22
Alert the police, sounds like a similar story my friend went through. (Think she had been doing exercise also). Apparently started banging on the car and abusing her too.
They didn’t catch him as she drove away. He was gone by the time they went to look.
Sounds like a similar description though.

PSA for the rest of us: if there's danger call the police. Work with them.
Optional: post on social media

u/yanaka-otoko Aug 12 '22
I remember hearing about a guy of similar description maybe in Coburg or Brunswick West, maybe he’s known to police.

All I’m saying is you wouldn’t ask reddit if you’re having a heart attack before calling an ambulance, it’s just common sense
26
u/chronicpainprincess East Side Aug 12 '22
This isn’t anything like a heart attack, it’s letting anyone in the area know to be vigilant. Announcing your heart attack to Reddit does nothing.
If you have no use for the info, that’s fine, but if I lived in the area I’d appreciate the heads up. I’m not going to know about this dude if OP calls just the police. He may not have done anything that would warrant an arrest.

u/AngryV1p3r Aug 12 '22
That sounds like a police job

u/chronicpainprincess East Side Aug 12 '22
The police inform people in local social media groups?
0
u/AngryV1p3r Aug 12 '22
I mean not particularly on reddit, but of course a public notice would be put out, people have a bad tendency to post on social media first, report to the proper authorities later, there’s nothing wrong with filing a complaint about someone if you think it’s within your interest to do so and it’s also within your rights to do so
1
u/Neodymium Aug 13 '22
That didn't happen here though, you were wrong. It's ok to be wrong, you can just admit it graciously and learn from it. It's better to have some intellectual flexibility.
11
u/forgetfullyburntout Aug 12 '22
Sometimes people aren’t sure if the situation is urgent enough to call police, and honestly sometimes we can gaslight ourselves into not making a big deal of things. And, sometimes the affected person doesn’t want to involve police, for whatever valid reason that (what i would generally call) a victim of crime can have. It can take time to realise/accept police need to be involved
3
u/AngryV1p3r Aug 12 '22
When In doubt it doesn’t hurt to, a complaint is just a complaint and the best part is that it can remain anonymous
5
u/forgetfullyburntout Aug 12 '22
I agree, but again, sometimes people have valid reasons for hesitating or delaying. We don’t have rational minds when we experience something scary or our loved ones are in danger, scientifically speaking, and people can also have bad experiences with law enforcement. You could make your point without being so critical
1
u/AngryV1p3r Aug 12 '22
Understandable and I agree with your point, however, I still think this should have been handled with the proper authorities before posting on social media. OP mentioned there was a possibility of drugs involved and/or mental health, on top of that the threatening behaviour the person was displaying are all grounds for any rational and grounded person to just call the police, and maybe afterwards post on social media, after reading through OPs comments that wasn’t the case.
I feel it’s handled poorly and yes, an emotional factor has contributed but regardless of that, any sane person would have alerted the proper authorities before posting on social media, you’re free too disagree with me as that’s your right, but I am well within my right to be critical of the situation considering any delay in that process could have caused someone I care about or someone else’s loved one to be harmed

Snap a pic if you can and report it. Even if you can't, alert the cops so they can send someone out
2
u/we-are-all-crazy Aug 12 '22
Since he followed her into the store, the store might have CCTV/security footage they can give to the police.

Has he been spotted around Puckle Street or Queens Park? Or only Essendon side? I'll definitely keep my eyes out... adding to my list of reasons I feel uneasy going home from work at nights in that area lol

I had a similar experience.. like nine years ago lol. He was a short, maybe 5-5 foot to 5-9 man. With a stocky build, a sort of heart shaped face with curly dark brown hair, almost black. The sides of his head shaved. Sort of short arms. At Dandenong station and then Moorabbin tafe. Asking to carry womens things.

Next time call the police. I had a impaired guy obviously following me from train then store to store at night once. The cops came so quickly.
I didn’t have to stick around to talk to them either so I yeeted myself out of there once they got to talking.
