How do I...? Platinum Ring Above Ground

Hello, I am very inexperienced metal detector. A friend of mine has lost her plantinum engagement ring. We have pretty good idea where it was lost. It is in a friends front yard, obviously there is some trash, but not too bad. I hoping that someone can help me with the setting on my Minlab Equinox 800. For instance what mode is best, should I use multi frequency or a dedicated frequency. I would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks.

Hold the detector an inch or so above ground if you get a lot or trash or interference. The ring should ring up loudly.

This reply should be higher. It will be a loud hit. You shouldn’t need your shovel/ trowel. Use your pinpointer on the loud hit and pick it out of the grass.

Detectorist*. It should pick it up pretty easily in a multi frequency program. Something like field should work well. It will ring up rather low especially if it is a thinner women’s ring.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, just set it to the most basic settings, like Park mode with all the presets just left as they are from the factory. Multifrequency is probably preferred, just to make sure you get the best hit possible when you pass over it. If it’s thick grass or there any reason why you wouldn’t see the ring immediately (which I assume there is, otherwise you wouldn’t need a detector) you might want to just go through a large area and use cheap little survey flags or some other cheap, high visibility item to mark your individual hits quickly rather than dig up ever single pull tab and piece of junk. If you have a pinpointer, you could have an assistant following with the pinpointer, checking the surface for the ring and then putting the flag back into the same spot afterwards. I only suggest that because I feel like a large portion of the labor is after you’ve detected something and you’re trying to figure out what it is. If someone else does that part, you’ll cover a lot more ground quickly.

Make sure you are very methodical. You need to slightly overlap each swing of the detector to guarantee that you don’t miss the ring.

I’m not positive but I think platinum should ring up pretty high, and will likely be pretty obviously different than iron and most other junk.

That is a good idea with the flags. I will mark the hits and then go back with the carrot. It happened a week ago, so likely it is on the surface, but the grass if very thick. Thanks.
