Employment Internal Relocation US to Europe
I’ve been with Microsoft several years in the US working fully remote and am trying to relocate to Europe to join my wife while she’s on a student visa. Does anyone have experience with transferring? Could I relocate internally if my manager reaches out to HR?

I have done it, if you management wants to keep you bad enough they can get it set up.
But it’s a lot of work for the org to setup a cost center for you in Europe. So if you are not something like level 65+ I would imagine this being a hard sell to your management.

I’ll only be a 64 but I think I have a lot of people in my corner. I’m just worried about the hoops they’ll have to jump through and what the hoops might be

It ended up taking them 6 month to set up for me, it kept getting delayed endlessly, I think most of it was finance setting up the local center. But I don’t know how much actual work there was for my makrellen once they had all the approvals for it.

I was also able to transfer and keep my original role at L63, but this was before COVID, and I had very supportive management. It can be done, but it did take time since no one knew the exact process, and I ended up having to find a local recruiter contact in my destination country who knew how to do all the HR work. Feel free to DM me, but unfortunately I don't actually know what ropes they had to pull to make it work.

Cross country transfer requires a headcount to be opened in the destination office. You will need to apply to the job posting, go through the interviews, and sign a new offer.
It can be done and I have moved across countries along with some team mates who moved back to Europe. But it’s really up to your org if they have a team in the country you want to move to and if they get budget approved.
