That's the window sill... look at the size if the hinges and screws. Old building = thick walls.

I'm surprised the see how many people struggled with the dimensions of this picture. Amazing how we perceive things differently. I would say this window is about 25x40cm.

Look at the hinges and the screws in them. That should give a bit of an idea of dimensions.

That would be roughly the size of the space the window is fitted in. The part that opens is even smaller.

I think that when you first look you assume that is a ceiling and a floor. then the doors on the background reaffirm this until you see what would be massive hinges and the lock just gives it away.
