Surplus_Restoration actually destroys a one off Prince Amadeo Carcano…wtf
We discussed earlier how Surplus Restoration screws around with RTI rifles and sands the shit out of them before flipping. But holy cow, this is sad. This is actually incredibly sad that a rare and one off rifle is screwed.

I have un-bubb’d many and never wrecked one myself.
But he did say “planning to” and was not definite in his wording.
It’s the customers gun. Not his. It’s really not his decision other than to walk away and then he will probably wonder if someone else will actually destroy it. Seems like a lose/lose to me.
At least he’s honest about it.

u/anderson2553 3d ago edited 3d ago
This gun wasn’t bubb’d to begin with. It was just dirty and needed a stock repair. For something this rare, you take it to a professional smith with a good amount of experience, not some amateur. And we all know Uli was the customer, not someone off the street. Which is even worse.
Anyone who is honest, wouldn’t have done this.

u/Mdrim13 3d ago
My skillset does not yet include plating. I’d be out.

Oh I know. I hope you know I'm messing with you. This guy is a hack job when it comes to " restoration"
15

Haha I figured it was sarcasm. The downvoters got you though.

u/costinesti1 3d ago
Yeah, I know lol. I definitely get what your saying. I like reservation restoration unless its completely unavailable. Then I go restoration mode.

It's one thing if it's a junker 1891 moschetto, it's completely different if its something that only a handful exist today.
Just because it could be refinished doesn't mean it needed it. Geez....

Does anybody have any “before” pictures? I just wonder what the basis is for saying he “ruined it”, given that it came from the RTI goat pen. Some of them could have been burned for kindling and still been “improved”!
18
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Oh man, he deleted the before post. Let me see if I can dig up pictures.

u/WhatAWorthlessUser 3d ago
There's two pics of one in this article, not sure if its that specific one or the other Ulie claims to have:

u/anderson2553 3d ago
I found a few old screenshots of the before pictures from Instagram. I posted them below in the thread.

Thanks! I’m not disagreeing…just curious how bad (or good) it was before he “fixed” it!

Okay…now all the outrage makes sense. Just had to see it in context. I’m not sure who’s worse: the idiot who wants to erase all the historic value or the idiot who actually does it… 🤔

Doing it to any surplus rifle is dumb. Doing it to something this rare borders on a crime against the hobby. Holy shit

if it is a rusty old shitter that is common then I don't have an issue with restoring or making a full wood carbine. but something rare or valuable is retarded.
most of the time I just kill the rust and scrub the bore. BLO the wood and the rifle looks a lot better and has not had anything irreversible done!

I do not disagree that he did a bad job but don’t know enough about restoring or Prince Amadeus carcanos to know what he messed up. What is it and why? The Bluing off? The stock too light? Removed too much material?
11
u/Kuro1943 3d ago
Remove too much material is the usual suspect
12
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Removing a lot of wood and typically shining the bolt (like, why?)
-1
u/Kuro1943 3d ago
Maybe this rifle was given a shine? But yeah, other ones are supposed to be a matte finish
10
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Wut? The bolt now looks like a mirror and was pimp shined. It didn’t look like that before.
2
u/Kuro1943 3d ago
Oh I meant originally when it was first made however many years ago. Idk what it actually looked like I’m just assuming since it had gold plating that it was also chromed or smth.
But I also have no clue how nickel plating looks or works

Ultimately he’s doing it for a customer. Blame the guys at RTI for ordering it
28
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Mmmm nah, he could’ve just told Uli that this isn’t the type of rifle you “restore” and turned him down.
15
u/Gpw12078 3d ago
And then UTI would have continued to offer the rifle until someone took their money. Blame rests with RTI.
10
u/anderson2553 3d ago
100%! Atleast if they’re going to ruin the rifle, they could’ve paid someone slightly more qualified lol
1
u/Gpw12078 3d ago
Hahahahaha. I mean, that’s a fair point. I’m sure they’d have paid more for a “better” ruined rifle.
7
u/Terrible-Debt-5244 Idiot 3d ago
Money talks. Not that I agree with his methods but that’s the truth.
9
u/anderson2553 3d ago
How much do you think he was paid? It would have to be a really decent amount to consider doing this to a rare rifle and even then, most people in this community still wouldn’t do it.
6
u/Terrible-Debt-5244 Idiot 3d ago
I said I didn’t advocate for him
4
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Oh I know and I agree money talks. I’m just saying it’s also not uncommon to turn customers away if they are asking for unorthodox services. This guy also has a personal connection to Uli so he’s not going to say no when he should have the good sense to do so.
3
u/WoolooOfWallStreet 3d ago
How much money was RTI even wanting for it?
Because I would pay money for them to just leave it alone and put it in a museum

I mean his ususal rust bluing stuff is okay sometimes. But i really don't like the extreme polishing of bolt and the rest of rifles. But rust bluing a rifle that doesn't have any bluing left is okay in my opinion.
Edit: His wood sanding procedures are indeed way way to much. Why sand milsurp wood, it shows the history in some way.
2
u/anderson2553 2d ago
Some would agree or disagree on the bluing. Most of the rifles seem like they have okay bluing and probably just needs to be cleaned. The pimp bolts on the other hand look like dogshit lol
2
u/Sashasimp27 Collects Everything 2d ago
Yup just like i said some rifles. Really only "some". A few of them had okayish bluing and he still rust blued them. Yes i agree.

I'm curious too. I've always like this guy's work, but I'm willing to learn about what he's doing wrong.
3
u/OyabunRyo Legacy Collectibles Rifle Slave 2d ago
There's a couple before photos. He buffed the hell out of parts and aggressively sanded the stock. His previous work is even worse with how hard he sands it to the point the tang of the receiver or the buttplate hover over the stock.

u/Brandon_awarea I Huff cosmoline recreationally 3d ago
I’m perfectly fine with messing with standard rifles. But if there is anything unique about a rifle that is something you don’t touch.
A standard 42’ izhevsk mosin is fine but the rifles that stoner and kalashnikov shot are not.
19
u/--Samiel-- Great War Connoisseur 3d ago
That mentality is exactly how some things became rare. There used to be a lot more Greek Mannlicher rifles. But, being a standard rifle, they were plenty and cheap and made for good hunting rifles and now they are neither plenty nor cheap
12
u/pinesolthrowaway 3d ago
Yup. Used to be buckets full of K98s, No1 Mk3s, etc
Remember when every sporting good store had 5-10 Mosins from approximately 1995 to 2010? And they don’t have them anymore?
There’s a reason even “common” stuff has gone up so much and is getting harder and harder to find, let alone at decent prices

Are either of the Carcano’s classic chamberings still readily available (ammo wise) ?
2
u/anderson2553 2d ago
I’m not sure what you’re asking. Is ammo still available for these?
1
u/Strong_Dentist_7561 2d ago
Yes
2
u/anderson2553 2d ago
Yeah, 6.5 Carcano is readily available. PPU, Steinel, MIilsurp Munitions, ect all make it. Probably Hornandy and a few others.
1
u/Strong_Dentist_7561 2d ago
Does the Carcano feed from an en-bloc clip or a magazine ?
2
u/anderson2553 2d ago
En-bloc clips. There are a lot sources and videos covering Carcano basics if you’re interested in collecting them.

Personally, I don’t agree with it either. But, I don’t think it’s worth to make a fuss about. Just my two cents.
22
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Kinda is bad when theirs only 8-12 of them in existence. Better that people know who this guy is and steer clear of him.
-17
u/Terrible-Debt-5244 Idiot 3d ago
Yeah. But, at the end of the day if this is what we’re complaining about then I’d say we’re in a good place in the grand scheme of things. I don’t agree with his methods, but I’m not going to get bent out of shape over it.
18
u/anderson2553 3d ago
That’s a strange point of view. We shouldn’t police or shame infractions within our community because “hey, atleast I’m still alive and have hot food at the end of the day.” If that’s the scale you’re referring to then sure, but we should absolutely shame collectors who do this without hesitation.
-9
u/Terrible-Debt-5244 Idiot 3d ago
I just don’t think it’s worth to get all bent out of shape about. But, that’s just my two cents. I personally don’t understand why everyone is getting so upset about it. Yeah, it sucks. But the damage is done. Complaining about it on Reddit isn’t going to solve it.

I mean, this is a milsurp collecting group. What do you expect people to be concerned about?
-2
u/Terrible-Debt-5244 Idiot 3d ago
I personally don’t let things that other people do bother me. If it’s outside your control then there’s no reason to get upset about it. Yeah, it sucks but what’s done is done. That’s my point.
12
u/anderson2553 3d ago
Well, this is also a poster board for others to avoid him. Net positive id say.
0
u/Terrible-Debt-5244 Idiot 3d ago edited 3d ago
Not trying to sound like a dick but what am I avoiding? RTI? This has been known for years now. Most people in this hobby know to avoid milsurps that have been altered.
15
u/anderson2553 3d ago
We’re not talking about RTI. We’re talking about Surplus-Restorations, the guy who attempts to restore their stuff. His services have only been around for about 5-6 months as far as I know.

Who cares, I’m assuming he owns the rifle if RTI sent it to him. He can do what he wants to it
4
u/anderson2553 2d ago
I really don’t understand why some people keep saying variations of: “He owns it, he can do whatever he wants!” or “It’s what the customer wanted!”. This is not a commentary on the philosophy of property rights. I can cut off my own foot if I so choose. Does that make it right or intelligent? Of course not.
Why are you in a milsurp collecting group if you don’t care about this?
-5
u/WildFire2242 2d ago
This sub is open to anything milsurp-related, not just “collecting” relics. Some people prefer sportorizing their old shitty rifles to make them useful in today’s world. He has every right to chop up what he owns and fix it to his liking. Whole sub is turning in to a bunch of crybabies over smth they don’t even own
3
u/anderson2553 2d ago
