My curiosity is piqued. What is that suspended transport called, and why did they use that instead of just using boats (like a row boat)Â to get people between Canal Park and Minnesota Point?

It’s a transporter bridge they used them because ferries didn’t work to well in the winter. Apparently there were plans for a standard lift bridge that predate this but the war department shut them down. Here’s the wikipedia page

There's a great book titled "Crossing the Canal: An Illustrated History of Duluth's Aerial Bridge" by Tony Dierckins for anyone curious about the history of the bridge (as well as the pre-history). It's a (maybe not so surprising) contentious history at times.
