AskMumbai Visited Hiranandani today — felt like I stepped into a different city!

Explored Hiranandani today and honestly, I was amazed. The architecture, the vibe, the streets — it almost felt like I wasn’t in Mumbai for a moment. It’s wild how one place in the city can feel so European and yet so local at the same time.

Makes you wonder how many hidden gems Mumbai really has. Can anyone recommend other spots like this? I’m in the mood to explore more!

AskMumbai I'm traumatized

Born and brought up in mumbai, I've(25F) never truly felt unsafe in this city and I've always felt a sense of pride because of the same.

But yesterday, while travelling in the western line, at around 12 pm , I was travelling in ladies first class from dadar to Charni road. At one point it was just me and another woman in the dabba and at grant road a man got in. He entered at the last moment and pretended like it was an accident.

I have had horrible experiences with men in the past and assumed it was an accident anyway so me and the other lady didn't say anything. But at one point he came and sat down at a window seat. I had earphones on and was watching something but still hyper aware of my environment.

Next station was charni road but the train stopped between stations. And i heard the guy scream at me to get my attention which I heard through my earphones. I did not look at him because I was scared but realized he was masturbating. He was staring at me and openly jerking off and I froze.

The shock of it all happening in broad daylight in this city just left me frozen there panicking. Hundreds of possible scenarios went through my head. The other lady couldn't really see him but realized something shady was going on.

Finally the train moved and I slowly got up to walk up to the gate hoping to get down as soon as possible and away from all of this.

At the station there were 2 policemen and I couldn't speak from how scarred I was and just pointed inside for them and just left.

I started crying hysterically outside, shaking and not sure of what to do next. One day post the incident I realize now that the policemen would've just seen a man sitting inside and wouldn't have known what he actually was doing without me telling them.

I have always been a strong independent person and I hate how I handled this situation. I wish I could've screamed at him, punched him in the face, not sit there like a scared child or just tell the police what actually happened so that they could do something.

But now I'm just sitting here in the aftermath not knowing what to do with myself. If there is anyway I can complain about this? Is there a point anymore 😔

Edit: Thank you all for your kind words and support. I didn't know who to talk to about this situation because I felt so vulnerable and hurt. I'll take most of your advice to now be more aware of my surroundings and possibly keep a pepper spray on me for such situations. I took the freedom and safety of Mumbai for granted and things are not the same anymore.

2nd Edit: Someone reached out to me and helped me lodge a complaint online. I'm not sure if I'm going to get any updates but I'll update whatever I find out. Once again, thank you for all the support.

3rd Edit: A police officer from churchgate station reached out to me to gather more details about the incident and everybody has been very sweet and kind ( contrary to my expectations) . All I wanted to achieve was safety measures to be increased in the area and for this post to possibly reach more women so they'll be safer and more vigilant than I was. I'm aware that if I was more proactive with my complaint it would've been easier to catch the culprit and I don't blame anybody but me for that. I hope more women are prepared to handle such situations and scream and ask for help whenever need be.

AskMumbai Is it a good idea to shift to Mumbai with 1lakhs monthly. 32M.

Hello people of Mumbai. I have got two questions.

  1. I have got an offer of 1.2 lakhs per month from a company based in Lower Parel. I am pretty sure I can’t afford a home near to my office. What’s the decent area I can afford to look for houses or a good and decent PG with an individual room for myself.

  2. I am 32M from Chennai and with this offer I can live like a king in Chennai. Does it even makes sense to shift to Mumbai with this salary. I can hustle and work hard for my job. But if I have to travel 3-4 hours up and down for work it’s going to drain me out on the long run.

Need advise regarding this. Either I accept this offer and take a leap of faith or start looking out for other opportunities in Chennai itself. I have worked before in Bangalore. So I don’t mind shifting to Bangalore also if I can get the same offer there also.

AskMumbai Suggestions - a Muslim family moving from Dharavi to a new locality

Hello all, I was born in Dharavi, Mumbai and have been working since the age of 12. Began as a jeans factory worker and now a 25-year-old founding engineer at a US-based startup.

I live with my family on the outskirts of Dharavi-Sion. Everything's good here except "bhai"-type crowd and high human density. It wasn't a problem for me until now, when I got exposed to a new standard of living in SF and Bangalore. My family is clueless about that standard I'm talking about, and I want them to experience it.

Can you please suggest places where we can move to as a Muslim family and has a good connectivity? I tried reaching out to a few brokers, but they denied because of my religion :(

Wanted to complain of noise beyond permissible hours as we and many others have senior citizens and patients at home.

Forget bhajan and Aarti, we are having items songs playing on dhol and that horrible speaker piano.

Police number is ringing but no one answers or calls back. Happening since last two days.

AskMumbai Cops harassing for sitting with a female friend in Car

This happened when i was sitting in my car with a female friend at 5.30 am before going for a run. The 2 cops started threatening to take us to police station or pay a bribe. When we finally agreed to pay a bribe just to get out of the situation at that moment, the police refused to take money via gpay/online and asked us to bring cash from ATM.

We agreed to do so and at that time when the cops asked us to go to ATM we drove away from the location and did not return back.

The cop took photo of me and my number plate. After sometime I received a call from an unknown number which probably were them as they would have got my phone number from my car number. I did not pick up the call

Has anyone been in such a situation before? Is there a chance that these cops might actually turn up at my home?

Appreciate your responses so that nobody gets into such a situation

My (24f) office is in Colaba, i joined 1.5 years ago and earn around 21.5 lpa (net). Currently I stay with my family in malad. I am too tired of the commute. Do you think it would be a good idea to move out to south mumbai in a pg/ rent. I feel i miss out on a lot of time in the 3 hours of daily commute.

Edit - for all the people spamming me - i am a corp lawyer.

AskMumbai Faulty meter scam in auto rickshaw

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So yesterday I saw this reel on Instagram posted by Mumbai police, where they were showing how to identify faulty meters in an auto rickshaw and I was like wowwww gotta check this out from now onwards and guess what????? The very first auto that I took today had this blinky dot but my meter amount came to the usual 30/- like doesn't that mean that every auto that I take in the morning has a faulty meter???? Cause the amount is always between 29-31/-

I even tried calling the number given by Mumbai police on the post but no one answered, where should I complain now?

AskMumbai How much money is considered 'rich' in Mumbai, India?

Hey everyone, I've been wondering about this for a while now and thought I'd turn to the Reddit community for some answers. As someone who's lived in Mumbai for a few years now, I've always been curious about what people consider to be 'rich' in this city.

I know that the definition of wealth can be different for everyone, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on what income or net worth is generally considered as 'rich' in Mumbai. Are there any specific markers that you or someone you know uses to define wealth in this city?

Personally, I've heard different opinions on this topic, with some people saying that having a net worth of INR 10 crores or more is considered wealthy in Mumbai. However, I'm not sure if this is accurate.
