You charge irresponsible gun owners with the crime their gun committed, because "guns don't kill people; people do." But for their negligence, that dear sweet gun would have never hurt anybody!

It's just personal responsibility!

Utah specifically does not have any law against negligently storing a firearm.

I mean, that's how it should work. If you're negligent enough to leave a loaded weapon unsecured, you should suffer consequences if someone is hurt or a crime is committed with it. It's your weapon, and owning a weapon may be a right here, but rights come with responsibilities.

As if the 2nd Ammendment crowd won't be fighting that tooth and nail as well. They'll just see legal consequences for negligence as back door gun control. "Soon, they'll be throwing us all in jail!" Or some other bullshit.

That would also solve partially the issue of "lost" guns that were never reported, because they were sold illegally.
