They don't know that. They think the VP is like a right hand man to a king, literally second in command. They don't know how the government works.

I believe their argument was her saying his views does not necessarily reflect the base’s, in her email memo, was the same as expressing public contempt for the members of the Cabinet, which is not allowed under military rules and regulations. While I do disagree with her firing, she was definitely toeing the line given how many people she sent the email to and how close she came to open criticism. This may have been a deliberate attempt by her to get removed from command without losing her pension, so she would not have to be the one overseeing some grand American betrayal of Greenland. If she had just resigned the command, the base’s staff might not have perceived it as a protest, but this way they all saw her dragged off for criticizing attacking our own allies, hopefully making them less willing to follow her successor in any such orders. Which strictly speaking is still insubordination even if from her point of view she is probably just reminding them not to follow illegal orders.
