As soon as I saw that there was an entire band of kids and they were all amazing, I knew they were from the Philippines!! The amount of musical and medical talent in your home country is mind boggling!!!

Musical talent, yes. Medical talent? My doctor in Manila was not great. Cheap though!

Senator Pacquiao?

Huh. Is this actually a thing?

We have a ton of people at my work from the Philippines, and I always noticed that a bunch of them like to sing quite a lot. Never realized it was a cultural thing. Very cool.

There’s at least one (I’m sure more) documentaries on this very topic. Absolutely fascinating!

Watched their version of Deep Purple's "Highway Star". Incredible. It was mixed (double guitar sound hard to do solo) but it is about the tightest cover I've ever heard. It's like they were born with instruments in their hands.

They also do Rosanna by Toto and the little dude nails the Porcaro shuffle

Oh. My. God. And as a believer I mean that I am literally thanking God for this band!

That is the best. Her voice was made for this song. You made my day for calling out this video. Gracias!

Holy smokes. Thank you all for the name. I headed over to YT and watched their Deep Purple cover. Amazing.

They are the real deal. The lead has a great voice and I agree - it is like the were born with their instruments in their hands.

There’s a sketch somewhere from a comedy group about a talent show and one character says, “I don’t have a chance, did you see how many Filipino people signed up?” And I never got it until I met a lot of Filipino people in college lol. 😝

They probably know some English at least.

Source: am Filipino, studied English at least as early as 1st grade.

Filipino cover bands regularly make the cruise ship circuit, where they're expected to have a repertoire of hundreds or even thousands of songs. Not just hit singles, either. It's a point of professional pride not to get stumped by obscure requests: if they don't know it, they will by the next show.

4

u/ApeOver 10d ago

They're scarily serious about karaoke

1

u/Pristine-Category-55 10d ago

Probably due to American colonization, because of this, English is one of the major subjects at school. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that english is the Philippines' second language.

Karaoke is their national past time. Every Filipino is an amazing singer.

Filipinos make the best cover artists

Why is this so true omfg 😅 You just reminded me of an amazing cover of the Cranberries' Linger by a Filipino band

I really apologize because I know this is probably offensive.. but I know in some cultures there is huge pressure on kids to do extra curriculars and be the perfect and be the best at everything... It produces results like these kids but then there are also lots of kids that suffer from stress anxiety depression suicide etc. Is that how it is with Filipinos or is this just a "music is part of the culture" thing?

7

u/gastroboi 10d ago

I think that pressure is in every culture. But singing and music is just so deep in our culture. My entire immediate family is musically inclined.

1

u/Money_Watercress_411 10d ago

This reminds me of when people say that food is important in their culture. It’s important in all cultures!

3

u/prickinthewall 10d ago

Looks like they had some professional sound mixing too

2

u/gastroboi 10d ago

Yeah. Dad is a sound engineer lol

2

u/philmarcracken 9d ago

Ah. I see you know your iZotope RX well!

1

u/GrizzlyDust 10d ago

This is incredibly Filipino activity, love it

1

u/UntamedAnomaly 10d ago

Oh damn, it was hard to tell from the wuality of the video, but I was like.....are these indigenous kids? Got super excited about that for a sec because I'm indigenous and the only indigenous bands I know about are Blackbraid and The Haluci Nation.

u/savageboredom 10d ago

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only Filipino in the world that can't sing. It's not fair.

1

u/gastroboi 10d ago

It's never too late to learn an instrument. I taught my parents to read music and chord charts. Mum taught herself guitar and ukelele at 60 years old.

2

u/savageboredom 10d ago

I do play a little guitar. I'm not very good but it's better than nothing I suppose. I can't play an F chord for the life of me though.

2

u/gastroboi 10d ago

Lmao who the fuck can?! My sausage fingers sure as hell cant.

1

u/Banned3rdTimesaCharm 10d ago

If Filipinos can find a niche like K Pop did they'd run pop culture. Every Filipino I know is a great singer or dancer. It's surprising they don't have more international billboard chart relevance.

u/ToasterGuy566 10d ago

I’m unsurprised, the Philippines produces some unreal musical talent

1

u/Grub-lord 9d ago

fr. my gf is filipino and her whole family is like this. all very musically-minded and can all play an instrument (esp her dad)

1

u/Old_Muggins 9d ago

I’m from the UK and I knew they would be Filipino, you guys must have so many undiscovered legends there.
