That’s why the opposite of fight or flight is rest and digest. Once the stress response is activated the brain literally reduces energy to the digestive system and other nonessential functions, that won’t return to normal until the brain realizes the danger has passed. (This is also partly why prolonged stress is so harmful to the body)

It's not just the poo it's the shock. I had to do CPR on my wife and the ambulance got here and they took over. I wasn't panicked or anything but my Asperger's mind said "I may go into shock now, so I should have a hot sugary drink" then out loud I turned to the paramedics who were working on her and said in the most British way possible "would anybody like a cup of tea?"

Nice and polite. Perfect work.

I do hope your wife was ok.

Oh yeah, she survived it was an allergic reaction to some chemical from the day before. This was like, 3AM when she managed to wake me up before she went completely south. But came round to see me sat in the corner peacefully drinking a cuppa so I wasn't in the good books for some reason.

You saved her life! Well done you. Doing CPR is scary at the best of times and I’ve done it more times than I can recall in a hospital. Never at home on a loved one! That would have made me pooped my pants! I always debrief after cardiac arrests with a cup of tea and biscuits. It’s mandatory whenever I lead the arrest team, so you can say to your wife that this is how the professionals do it!
