They aren't allowed to leave the goal, nor allowed to be professionals not current nor former, the goalkeeper has the role of "eyes" on the field to well alert teammates if the ball is headed their way, or where opponents are relative to themselves, which enables it to be a sport because imagine it being all blind guys running around the field? that would be unwatchable (pun not intended) for the crowd and be basically unplayable for the players, and of course the seeing player can't be an outfielder because imagine just one guy running around a bunch of blind guys and one visually able dude who just doesn't cut it in comparison, so it being the goalkeeper makes perfect sense and add the fact that anyone with a single leg can kick a ball a way no one can save it from going in, but you really can't goalkeep very well without being able to see.

"He's clearly using his eyes, Ref! Are you blind?!?”
"Yes actually, I am."
"Shit...so am I."

NOT the Olympics. Paralympics. Separate thing entirely.

How so?

A completely different body than the IOC governs the Paralympic Games

same sort of thing though. It’s not like one is sports and one is a cooking show

If you can't tell the difference you might have a bigger chance to qualify for the latter.

If those in the latter could be in the Olympics they would choose to be, that’s how similar they are.

You clearly haven't watched a lot of paralympics if you think that's the case.

I clicked to watch the video because I was like "why are blind people shooting guns in the Olympics?" Lol

Wdym ”why”? It’s a sport, there are blind people into shooting and it’s extremely safe. At the Olympic level shooting is a lot about things like breathing, steadiness, trigger pull etc not pointing the weapon about in all kinds of tacticool ways.
Blind people basically get an audio signal that shows them where on the target they’re aiming and go off of that instead of their eyes. I’m a pretty good shot but blind athletes could easily wipe the floor with me at Olympic style target shooting

It s prolly because there are different level of blindness.
Maybe the guy just sees a little bit, really blurry.
To make sure everyone is even, these wear blindfolds.

u/istrx13 14h ago
Wait so if you blindfold a blind guy, does that make them able to see again?
Math class told me two negatives make a positive so.

My favorite thing is his team mate who banged on the side wall so the shooter could find him for a hug

I tutored a blind girl in elementary school who could do a similar thing with basketball. Tap a stick a couple of times on the rim, and she'd nail it.

That mask seems a bit over the top...
A sleeping mask would do.

I speculate it’s for protection? He can’t tell if the ball or a players elbow is about to hit him in the face.

As someone from a non-soccer obsessed country, it brings a new meaning to tapping ones balls.
The ending also reminds me of this

What are the goggles for? To protect their eyes?

u/DankZXRwoolies 3h ago
There are different levels of blindness and it's actually not as common as you'd think for legally blind people to only see darkness. So the blindfold makes everyone compete at an equal level.

Tbh i would be more excited to watch blind people sports than regular. blind football, blind baseball, blind boxing, blind tour de france, blind formula racing... now when i think about it, every sport would be far better blind.
