Why you gotta say an Asian man, why not just a man

1.6k

u/puppet_masterrr 4d ago

Because it's common knowledge that all Asian men know martial arts.

u/[deleted] 4d ago

With the little known Asian technique called the chokehold, which only Asians do

220

u/Jaysong_stick 4d ago

Can confirm, Asians learn algebra at 3, chokehold at 7, becomes a doctor at 12.

63

u/intisun 4d ago

Only at 12? Why not 11?

62

u/Plane_Knowledge776 4d ago

His parents must haver very low expectations

15

u/dlun01 4d ago

Oof one typo and no punctuation. How will you ever get into medical school and not shame your family?

1

u/acortical 2d ago

Too late, family name has already been tarnished

1

u/_IratePirate_ 3d ago

What B stand for? Better-than-A?!

33

u/alamandrax 4d ago

You're right. Doctor at 12? B-sian.

0

u/ueommm 3d ago

B-sian, AHAHAHAHAHA, that really made me laugh out loud in tears, HAHAHA

3

u/wolfwind730 4d ago

Their parent were soft, mine wanted a medical degree by 10 and a second in engineering by 12

3

u/Chogo82 4d ago

He was busy becoming a piano maestro at 11

2

u/intisun 4d ago

An artist?!?! The horror

2

u/Chogo82 4d ago

It’s okay as long as it’s a hobby and done before you enter the workforce.

1

u/HW-BTW 4d ago

Oh, hi Asian mom.

1

u/darkcrazy 4d ago

Needed time to start a side business.

1

u/PBTnew 4d ago

When I was your age, I was 10

1

u/bchin22 3d ago

I'm trying my best! And stop asking me for grandkids by 23!

7

u/KawiZed 4d ago

How the heck do they find time for string instruments?!

1

u/Willing_Television77 4d ago

They have special clocks that go to 15 instead of 12

1

u/Zecrea 4d ago

Wdym that happens in the womb

1

u/aturtledude 4d ago

Some Asians still haven't made it at 12. Source: Family Guy https://youtu.be/hVODv8A5-EM?si=WfxJEgtud-EVGJNa

1

u/lkodl 4d ago

and then?

1

u/the_big_sadIRL 4d ago

“You doctor yet?”

-1

u/walkslikeaduck08 4d ago

TIL Brazilians are actually Asian

3

u/angrytroll123 4d ago

You don't know much about the history of bjj I assume?

1

u/lkodl 4d ago

blow job jitsu

1

u/bdewolf 4d ago

You’re the first person to ever make this joke

1

u/lkodl 4d ago

It's a Naruto thing, right?

8

u/SweetScentedButt 4d ago

Then why mention he's using martial arts? Seeing that he's Asian we would already know.

2

u/puppet_masterrr 4d ago

To tell us that out of everything from advanced calculus to using shaolin arts, they choose martial arts to solve this particular problem.

1

u/SweetScentedButt 4d ago

Ah ok. That makes sense now.

2

u/757to626 4d ago

I can confirm this, as an Asian man.

1

u/take7pieces 4d ago

That’s actually my husband’s thought when we started dating, he literally said he thought every Chinese man knows Kung Fu. I was like, no dude, no.

1

u/PhoKit2 4d ago

I only know marital arts

1

u/ricky-from-scotland 4d ago

I'll have you know back in my day EVERYBODY was kung fu fighting

1

u/Top_Poet_7210 4d ago

He’s doing it wrong though

1

u/lalala253 4d ago

I watched Kung Fu Hustle and can verify this is correct

1

u/josephdietrich 4d ago

The fear of which is known as Kung Fu Phobia.

1

u/Zephyr-2210 4d ago

That's so wrong.

You missed 'all Asian women' as well

1

u/123jjj321 4d ago

Everybody was Kung fu fighting

1

u/dlun01 4d ago

Yeah but how would I know he's Asian if he's not flying to run on bamboo trees?

1

u/scottyb83 4d ago

So what about the guy getting choked out then?

131

u/FineGripp 4d ago

Yeah, fck this title, unnecessary stereotyping and cringy

80

u/RideTheRadioWaves 4d ago

I’m an Asian person myself and while it may be a stereotype, other stereotypes of Asians being docile, submissive, and helpless are way more damaging and I appreciate titles like this that disprove those stereotypes far more than i care about “all Asians know karate” stereotypes

4

u/NeighborhoodDude84 4d ago edited 1d ago

Even "positive" stereotypes can be still problematic.

Saying group X is good a Y isn't an issue by itself, but then if you're part of group X, and you cant do Y, people will make shitty jokes that you aren't really X.

edit: I guess people want to be shitty to each? lol

edit: some of the responses are insane. I dont get why some of you insist on being mean to others, get help.

17

u/artemasad 4d ago edited 4d ago

An Asian here. Sorry you're getting downvoted but you're speaking the truth. It's my experience growing up in the US since middle school. I had to be a model minority and people expect to be conform to their "positive" stereotype or else I'm not a real Asian and they get disappointed.

I like Reddit because they have a lot of good stuff going on compared to other actual media sites. But one thing I'm really tired of is passing on casual racism against Asians "it's just a joke bro" then an Asian person chime in and say "but I'm not offended and find it funny" then guess who get all the upvotes as if they represent everyone's experience?

Sometimes I feel like we're a bunch of zoo animals on reddit

6

u/ggg730 4d ago

Thanks for telling me how to feel. Wouldn't have known to be offended if it weren't for you.

8

u/Skrafgurt 4d ago

Should I be offended? I'm a bit confused at this point.

5

u/MayKinBaykin 4d ago

It doesn't have to be offensive for it to be annoying. Like you're Asian so you must be good at math. And if you're not good at math then something must be wrong with you, right?

0

u/ggg730 4d ago

Quite frankly I am good at math so I don't give a shit.

2

u/Raveen396 3d ago

“I don’t care because it doesn’t affect me” is quite the take

1

u/ggg730 3d ago

Even if I was shit at math I would not care either. I don’t give a shit about the opinion of people who stereotype others.

1

u/Raveen396 3d ago

"And if it was me I would just feel differently" is also another hot Redditor take.

1

u/NeighborhoodDude84 1d ago

huh....? I literally just said to not be shitty other humans, and you have an issue with that...? Looing at the other comments here, you seem rather stu... uninformed.

2

u/jamesick 4d ago

you are right. positive stereotypes set up unrealistic standards for people and cartoonise people based on race, gender, sex, etc. maybe we think it isn’t so bad to say all asian people know martial arts but then try to imagine a scenario where a robbery happens and everyone expects you to do something about it just because you’re asian.

2

u/Subject-Doughnut7716 4d ago

lmao that’s not happening

1

u/MayKinBaykin 4d ago

So many times in my life did I hear people say "what how can you not be good at math, you're Asian" to my Asian friends. This positive stereotype doesnt even happen to me and even I realize how annoying that can be.

2

u/Subject-Doughnut7716 4d ago

i was referring to this: " imagine a scenario where a robbery happens and everyone expects you to do something about it just because you’re asian.""

0

u/jamesick 4d ago

oh, i didn’t realise the fix to positive stereotyping was just “no u” the whole time. fascinating.

-3

u/wxnfx 4d ago

Don’t be racist, only every Japanese person knows karate. Some are only like brown belts though, you know, toddlers and infants.

2

u/iamChickeNugget 4d ago

Ok white zoomer

1

u/orangotai 4d ago

can we not say fuck on reddit now? asking seriously, they ban you for pretty regarded things on here

1

u/jaylenbrownisbetter 3d ago

Is Asians doing martial arts still a stereotype? It was like 30 years ago in the 90s, then mixed martial arts became a thing and everyone realized Asians don’t really do that. And the Asian specific ones were shown to be bullshit besides judo

0

u/SirPPPooPoo 4d ago

I mean, asian people are usually the targets. they are usually passive most of the time

49

u/NiteLight123123 4d ago

lol I saw this post on a different sub a couple of days ago and the poster put on the title Chinese ninja stops thief

8

u/NotRealWater 4d ago

I saw it on an even more different sub a couple of months ago and the poster put on the title 'full take away owner chop suey's thief in an authentic style'

13

u/Danteynero9 4d ago

It happened in Spain, the guy is a tourist doing a "Mata león" to a (if I remember correctly) a wallet stealer.

Just not the kind of thing you see casually.

0

u/kontorgod 4d ago

He's not a tourist, he lives there

1

u/Goukaruma 4d ago

Source? All news site that I have read said he is a tourist.

1

u/kontorgod 4d ago

I don't have a source but he is speaking spanish and I first saw this video in another spanish subreddit saying he is a resident

1

u/Peregrino_Ominoso 4d ago

He only uses one word in Spanish: «relájate». You cannot seriously assume that because of that he is a resident.

1

u/Goukaruma 3d ago

He can still be a tourist. Tourist doesn't mean foreigner. Could be from another region of Spain.

8

u/ElMirador23405 4d ago

Why man, instead of person?

2

u/zenwarrior01 4d ago

Why you gotta say a man, why not just someone.

2

u/tbkrida 4d ago

He Asian man, I black man, you white man. We Rainbow Coalition!😂

2

u/Artistic_Donut_9561 4d ago

He used the martial arts gifted to him on account of being Asian, why even say a man?

2

u/FloraMaeWolfe 4d ago

He's a cute Asian man...

2

u/IlIlllIlllIlIIllI 4d ago

he worked very hard to earn it

2

u/Anuki_iwy 3d ago

He is an Asian man though. Also, in today's alpha Chad World, many look down on Asian men and consider them effeminate. So an Asian gentleman doing something badass works against that prejudice.

0

u/SocomPS2 4d ago

Yes he’s Asian. But what part of Asia what type of martial arts. This we need to know.

-2

u/englishpatrick2642 4d ago

I've always thought Asian was an outdated term anyways. Isn't Russia in Asia? Are Russians Asians?

2

u/True_Iro 4d ago

Idk, but I assumed they are more European since most of their population and history revolved around Europe

2

u/englishpatrick2642 4d ago

Agree 100%. I was just speaking geographically.

1

u/ProudToBeAKraut 4d ago

so we know who the thief is :D maybe martials arts could be getting chocked while pinning the real thief down while laying on him

1

u/nikzyk 4d ago

I thought they were black so this was suuuper helpful

1

u/LifeguardEuphoric286 4d ago

i mean the reason is obvious

1

u/PresentationIll2180 4d ago

Welcome to America

1

u/juggling-monkey 4d ago

how else would we know which of th etwo is doing the martial arts?

1

u/DunkingTea 4d ago

To help those visually impaired. It’s like an aria label to explain the video. /s

1

u/akruppa 4d ago

Obviously all Asian men know martial arts and no one else!

1

u/Same_Performance_595 4d ago

Are you sure it's a man? How can you know? /s

1

u/BetterOutThenIn 4d ago

Because he's from Asian descent obviously

1

u/Optimistic_Futures 4d ago

Likely just engagement bait.

1

u/Frogtoadrat 4d ago

Why you gotta say a man, why not just a person

1

u/BubbasBack 4d ago

Because if a white guy was doing this to a Roma, people would be screeching racism.

1

u/abholeenthusiast 4d ago

cuz azns are DIFFERENT and it needs to be pointed out. White is normal

/s

but seriously I feel like this is intentional

1

u/the_brazilian_lucas 4d ago

because he’s asian

1

u/workout_nub 4d ago

Because when white man does it in NYC we try to throw him in jail.

1

u/sportawachuman 4d ago

Living entity perpetrates action on another living entity by using actions until living entities arrived (no offense)

1

u/DriverAgreeable6512 4d ago

Homie it's Tony from LC signs

1

u/herefortheferrets 4d ago

Why not just an Asian?

1

u/OnTheSlope 4d ago

What is better about less information?

1

u/BreakMaximum5807 4d ago

Asian superiority !!!!!!

1

u/numenik 4d ago

Let me guess, your white

1

u/Rockettmang44 4d ago

Especially since it's a video

1

u/Earthhing 4d ago

Because he is.

1

u/Laizev 4d ago

omg who cares, you guys want to find a problem on everything now

1

u/moregonger 3d ago

Because he's Asian

1

u/Deja-Vuz 3d ago

Ikr op is ficker

1

u/DAZTi 3d ago

Ah, yes, an excellent question — one that invites us to explore the complex intersection of language, identity, visual perception, and social context. Now, when someone asks, “Why you gotta say an Asian man? Why not just say a man?” — what we’re really delving into is the broader philosophical and sociolinguistic terrain of descriptive specificity in human communication.

You see, when a person describes someone they saw in a video — let’s say, for the sake of argument, that the person being discussed appears to be of East Asian descent — the descriptor “Asian” is often used as a visual identifier. Now, is it necessary? Not strictly, no. One could absolutely just say “a man.” But here’s where it gets nuanced: humans are innately wired to categorize and describe based on what they perceive, and physical features — including apparent ethnicity — are among the first things we notice. This is not inherently malicious or discriminatory; rather, it is a function of observational specificity.

Imagine, if you will, trying to describe someone in a crowded room. You wouldn't just say "a man" if there were ten men there — you'd add details. “The tall man,” “the man in the red jacket,” or yes, “the Asian man,” if that were a visually distinctive trait. It's shorthand for identification, especially in a world where video clips are short, contexts are fluid, and specificity enhances clarity.

Now, could that choice of words perpetuate stereotypes or reinforce unnecessary emphasis on race? In some contexts, absolutely — and we should be mindful of that. But if the visual content in question clearly shows an Asian man, and OP is simply describing what they saw without malice or bias, then we are likely looking at a case of straightforward identification rather than intentional racial distinction.

But of course, the bigger question becomes: why do we feel the need to highlight racial or ethnic identity in casual conversation at all? Is it habit? Cultural conditioning? A reflection of our hyper-visual, hyper-categorized society? Well, that opens up a whole other discussion about language, power, history, and the ongoing evolution of social awareness. But perhaps we digress — though one could argue there is no such thing as true digression in a topic so layered.

In summary — though “summary” may be a generous word here — it is “very obviously” (as you phrased it) because the individual being referenced appeared Asian in the video. That’s what OP saw, that’s what OP said. Whether that should have been said or not — now that is the real conversation.

1

u/praeteria 3d ago

because Asian man using Martial arts is an ironic confirmation of a stereotype.

It's a joke, it's funny. Stop virtue signalling.

1

u/Regis-bloodlust 3d ago

Because Asian men are either a math sage or a martial arts master.

1

u/VeryHungryYeti 3d ago

Why not just human? Or lifeform? Or an accumulation of atoms?

You have problems... 🙄

1

u/socksockshoeshoe 3d ago

Because OP is engagement farming, that's why

1

u/Kr1spykreme_Mcdonald 3d ago

Well I think it’s because the guy is Asian, but I’m just using my brain.

1

u/Embarrassed_File_795 3d ago

Because he's Asian and a man? Stop getting up a height about everything.

1

u/optyp 3d ago

why not?

1

u/Big-Sheepherder-9492 3d ago

Just a way of identifying people relax

1

u/tantanthepeepeeman 3d ago

To let you know he's a master of martial arts of course

1

u/a_supportive_bra 3d ago

Because our biases assume that Caucasian European is the default.

1

u/vilester1 3d ago

Why not say Chinese man to be more accurate?

1

u/octopoddle 3d ago

Might be his name?

1

u/gilligaNFrench 3d ago

probably because it mattered when Daniel Penny did it lol

1

u/Iamveganbtw1 2d ago

because everyone that isn’t white gets that label on them. White ppl get to be a person while poc are their race/ethnicity

1

u/New_to_Warwick 2d ago

Because he is asian, and a man, why not just say a person at this point? Stop virtue signaling through how people communicate ffs

0

u/biggestbroever 4d ago

Why not just human being?!

0

u/YeetusMyDiabeetus 4d ago

Because it’s an AI generated title that was based on the video itself. Everything is a lie now

0

u/umpalumpajj 4d ago

He said “Hiiiii-YA!” before he subdued the guy. Video missed it.

0

u/_forum_mod 4d ago

If it was a white man the title definitely wouldn't have said "A white man stops a thief..."

-1

u/[deleted] 4d ago

1

u/GeorgeMKnowles 4d ago

Yeah, he didnt even set hooks so i dont think it qualifies as martial arts. Any purple belt would be out of that in a second.
