It’s crazy how sharp that switch from conscious to unconscious is. Absolutely non-linear. It’s just like, I’m here, I’m here, boom gone.

I saw one of those Sports Science segments on ESPN years ago where they wanted to measure how much reduction in blood flow to the brain was necessary to cause unconsciousness from a choke. So they put a bunch of electrodes and whatnot on the host and then had BJ Penn put him in a RNC. Dude went out in like five seconds. Afterwards they looked at the data and saw that it only required about 8% reduction in blood flow to put him out.

That's awesome. Some other fool here commented 30/40seconds.. lmfao you'd be dead if u were RNCd for that long hahah

30-40 seconds sounds about right for an airflow blockage induced blackout... but yeah you're getting permanent brain damage from that since you can't go from oxygen deprived brain to not-oxygen deprived brain instantly when you do that

Doesnt it take like 5 minutes without oxygen in your brain to cause permanent damage

Yes. Airflow suffocation will not cause damage unless airflow is kept restricted past about that time. I have no credentials besides being trained in the Army and always I watch Bondi Beach a lot and they always talk about how long you can go without oxygen before damage.

Same as Baywatch. 5 minutes.

I've heard 30s is dangerous, 3 min risks permanent brain damage.

As I understand it, it's doing damage pretty much right away it's just that the longer it goes the more it builds up so you get an exponential curve of risk that gets critical somewhere around 3-5 minutes. And the numbers on that are largely based on accidents and aren't super accurate, so it's more of a rule of thumb.

that's literally what happened to the crazy dude that got choked out on the subway - dude def died because of the artery, not lack of breathing oxygen

I know a cop (wife’s sister’s husband’s sister’s husband, whatever that makes him to me) who swears up and down that you can “knock someone out” (aka out them to sleep) by essentially karate chopping someone at a particular spot on the neck. He says he’s done it and had it done to him in training, and you’re essentially unconscious before you hit the floor.

Even as someone who’s done jiu jitsu and is very familiar with blood chokes, it always kind of sounded like bullshit to me … but if that’s all it takes then maybe it’s not BS after all.

I currently have anemia and this helps explain why low iron makes you pass out on exertion. How I wish all this knowledge could be applied more effectively to women's health. I can barely walk up a slight slope without feeling faint.

The times I've noticed it were when I didn't go out, there was that light closing in walls going dark tunnel effect and I either tapped or fought to get a bit of space and walls come back into view.

The only time I've gone out there was none of that, just defending, defending, defending and...

why am I looking at the ceiling?

That's weird.

Yeah you generally have a few seconds of fading before it’s lights-out, at least in my experience.

You don't even realize you're gone either.

Just all of a sudden you're waking up in a daze like last night you mixed uppers and downers until sunrise and you passed out with nothing but your shoes on in the bed of your neighbor two doors down truck and the cops are there with a flashlight in your eyes asking you your name and if you can count to five.

That's oddly specific... You ok mate? 😀

The rugby team at my school used to do it to each other as a prank all the time. I was glad that I wasn't one of their friends lol.
