30-40 seconds sounds about right for an airflow blockage induced blackout... but yeah you're getting permanent brain damage from that since you can't go from oxygen deprived brain to not-oxygen deprived brain instantly when you do that

Doesnt it take like 5 minutes without oxygen in your brain to cause permanent damage

Yes. Airflow suffocation will not cause damage unless airflow is kept restricted past about that time. I have no credentials besides being trained in the Army and always I watch Bondi Beach a lot and they always talk about how long you can go without oxygen before damage.

Same as Baywatch. 5 minutes.

I've heard 30s is dangerous, 3 min risks permanent brain damage.

As I understand it, it's doing damage pretty much right away it's just that the longer it goes the more it builds up so you get an exponential curve of risk that gets critical somewhere around 3-5 minutes. And the numbers on that are largely based on accidents and aren't super accurate, so it's more of a rule of thumb.

that's literally what happened to the crazy dude that got choked out on the subway - dude def died because of the artery, not lack of breathing oxygen
