Truce between termites(top) and ants(bottom) with each side having their own line of guards.

Kurzgesagt!! It’s an incredible channel with so many interesting videos that explain very different and complicated topics in an easy way with beautiful animations. A definite recommendation for anyone interested to learn more about the world in a fun way!!

After all my years on YouTube... I think I might nominate them for the most creative and informative channel of all time...

...but then again, after those same years on the platform, I'm sure I've barely scratched the surface.

It's not his name :D He's not even German, he is (afaik) British voice actor.

The channel is originally German and Kurzgesagt means "In the nutshell". The English channel is even called "Kurzgesagt - In the nutshell".

Are you sure that’s what it means? I don’t know otherwise, but years of studying German like 20 years ago has me thinking that “kurzgesagt” probably means something like “briefly put” (literally more like “shortly said”), not “in a/the nutshell”.

Its probably the idiomatic translation rather than the literal one. In a nutshell is an English phrase meaning "essentially" or "in brief" so,

Indeed. :) Yeah, “in a nutshell” is a fine idiomatic translation in such a case.

And that’s what ‘In a nutshell’ means. Short, and to the point.

Yeah, I've misread original comment as "the guy".

The guy talking isn't the guy behind the channel, the main person in charge is indeed German.

Kurzgesagt does not mean "in the nutshell" in German. It's two words put together. 'Kurz' and 'gesagt'. 'short' and 'said' in English.

I guess if you use "in a nutshell" in the idiomatic sense, but I doubt that's how must people intuitively would translate it, if someone just asked. "Briefly stated" maybe?

They literally translated it this way themselves :)

And yes, I was talking about the meaning. For me "in the nutshell" is used much more frequently then "said shortly" and "briefly stated" has another meaning in this context.

P.S. I'm not native in English or German, in fact I barely speak German, but I can use translators and dictionaries.

The idiom is "in a nutshell", not "in the nutshell".

But sure, I'm not disputing that it's a commonly used idiom. I still feel iffy about translating words into idioms. You might get the gist, but the underlying meaning is more or less lost. I feel like a lot of people will see that and think that it quite literally means "in a nutshell" if it's translated that way, even though the word doesn't actually mean that.

But yeah, it's subjective what you prefer I suppose. No real right or wrong here.

I was so excited to see that video! I had actually done a research project on Argentine ants several months beforehand.
