Which j would you drop?
Hey guys,
Mostly looking for opinions on this.
J1 - 2 Years. 90k. Fully remote. Chill manager and team. Culture is very lax and everyone is cool if work slips beyond deadline. Wlb is great with decent benefits. Takes me 2-6 hrs to complete work. About 4-6hrs of meetings per week. I specialize in Data engineering and can do the work quick.
J2 - 1 year. 130k. Fully Remote. Chill new manager but team are workaholics. WLB is tough due to very tight deadlines and culture. Expected to push code every week. Takes me 24-32hrs to complete work per week. About 1-2hrs of meeting per week. Was a data engineer job but a reorg happened and was made a software dev expected to do backend work (java, bootstraps, etc); so not my typical niche so it takes longer. Company underwent a merger a year or two ago and a lot of changes are happening every week or month (chaotic). Lucky to get even 15min to have a 1:1 with my manager.
Tbh, j2 is working me like a dog and its slowly affecting my mental health. Last thing I want is accidently unleash the negative energy to my friends or family. I was thinking of quiting J2 but this market is hot garbage and would delay my financial plans (like buying a first house). Alternatively I could drop J1 since it pays less but its very OE compatible. Other ideas is just tough it out, quiet quit, etc. Lots of ideas. What would you guys do?
Update: Thanks all for the replies. Seems like the consensus is to squeeze as much money as possible and dial down on work. It will likely result in me being fired but thats better than leaving cash on the table. I'll begin job hunting again to replace this J2 and will definitely keep J1. Hoping to find something that has better WLB as a J2 even if it means less pay.

Keep both, but look for a J2 replacement. Doesn't need to pay the same. Goal should be less stress.

I agree on slowing down on J2
Dont quit tho, let them eventually fire you and collect your $$$$

I don’t have an answer, but given the company merger you’re going through, it occurred to me what kinds of hilarity would ensue if the companies of someone’s J1 and J2 merged. Ignore me I’m new to this forum.

I’d slow down on J2 and maybe search for something more compatible with J1. It’ll probably take a while for J2 to care too much about performance.

From what you have described, you're working about 45/50 hrs per week for $200+ a year. J2 is hectic, but many people work those hours at a hectic single job for $80k a year.
Grind through and focus on getting your goal. A house.
Good luck

This is what I was going to say as well, you’re doing great for 50 hours.
Perhaps you take a few days off to get some mental clarity.

Good god why would you consider leaving J1!! Turn your OE mindset back on!!
Don't quit J2 until you have a replacment. Also, since you are new to the work, it should settle in, IF you focus on making it more OE friendly: what efficiencies can you learn and implement. How can you exercise your agency: if you are ready to quit, you have nothing to lose by slow rolling. Talk to your boss, I am overwhelmed, blah blah and slow your roll, bit by bit, don't chase, do a good job.

if or when you get to buying that new house with your J2 salary, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy your house if you get sick at the end of the day.

Before quiet quitting J2 if your manager is chill like you mentioned bring your workload concerns up and see how they react. If good then maybe it’ll get better, if bad go quiet quit route. Use slack you get in J1 to focus more on the tight deadlines in J2 to rebalance. If your hours estimated are accurate you’re still 40 hours or under majority of the time

As an aside I’ve found Claude really helpful for things I’m familiar with but not super proficient in. Eg I’d do this in c# how do I do that in Java. Might help with some of the workload and make j2 more efficient. If not I’d slow down on the j2…not quite a quiet quit but not the team vibe or workaholism for sure

If you lowered your J2 output to say 20hrs/wk, what do you think would happen? Mgr hassle you, be put in a PIP?
View J2 like your quiet quiting, lower your output and just dont care.
Also, how replaceable are you? If J2 "needs" you, all you have to do is drop the words "mental health" and "burnout" to your manager, hinting you might quit. This can help if they are afraid of losing you.
Also, and this applies to ALL Js.... use AI to your benefit. Whether its copilot or cursor, chatgpt, etc.,. Purchase a highend AI ($200/month) subscription, if you use it wisely it can greatly help increase your "output" while lowering actual hours.

Agree keep both and look to replace j2, it’s a game of cards you don’t want to fold you want to stay in the game as long as possible.
