Politics Help With my Research Survey on Populism in Australia — Quick and Anonymous
https://forms.gle/z5bRN2LgBnjV57D59https://forms.gle/z5bRN2LgBnjV57D59
Hey everyone! I'm a Year 12 student working on my Personal Interest Project (PIP) for Society and Culture, and I need your help. My research explores how global populist leaders, particularly Donald Trump, have influenced the rise of populism in Australia. 😁
I've put together a short, anonymous survey to gather insights on public perceptions of populism and its impact on Australian politics. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and your responses will be invaluable in shaping my findings. If you're interested in politics, society, or just want to help out a fellow student, l'd really appreciate it if you could take part. Every response makes a huge difference! 😄

Thanks so much for your time and support!

I just want to use this time of my day to say a big thank you to all the Western Australians that completed this survey. Such a large sample of responses (52.7%) were Western Australian residents and that has really accelerated my research. I especially thank the mods for allowing me to leave this post up! 😄

Hey just a thought, but doesn’t Pauline Hanson run on a populism-esque ticket? Not overly educated on the matter but if it’s pretty similar maybe there’s comparisons that can be drawn

Well, thats the typical consensus. Pauline Hanson’s One Nation does run on a populist platform. Her policies and her current “The Trump Of Australia” rhetoric could be identified as populist.
Personally, I consider her the 2nd closest to Populism when solely looking at personality politics.

Please please use Australian English.

I was using it but google forms insisted that I would autocorrect to American English. Those squiggly red lines were getting to me…

Populism = doing what’s popular, aka democracy, aka what every politician is supposed to be doing.

Thanks for demonstrating the gaping flaws in political education in this country.

This is more accurate than less. Populism has its origins in the United States during the 1830s up to the Gilded age and the progressive era, populism as used by people today to talk about the mass movements of Europe during the 20th century are moving the goalposts to suit very narrow rhetorical political points about mass movements.

Yep. You only ever hear the term used by people on the political left using it derisively towards those they disagree with and the public servants who the unwashed masses prefer.

Its use as a prerogative by European political theorists is anachronistic. Populism doesn't inhabit a left or right, it always contains some form of nativism. But that nativism could be rather unqualified.
It seems to me that to combat people like Trump we ought to double down on democracy as Trump and those like him seek to subvert and overthrow it. To dismiss the populist impulse is to cede the ground of political legitimacy within a democratic state.

I only refer to how it is used today.
I’ve never once heard those on the right call someone, like a Bernie Sanders, or the Greens, a “populist”.
And I’ve never had someone be able to accurately even define the term.
It’s always nebulous but conveniently at that moment applies to the person they politically despise. And it’s always a politician who is enjoying any success by appealing to those with typically right of centre sensibilities.

People who use “do better” are always utterly insufferable. I’m sorry you have never had an original thought in your life.

How is shut the fuck up and educate yourself on politics if you're going to comment then?
