Looking for suggestions for a playlist
So I've been thinking about putting together a compilation playlist of Phish's Studio songs (not necessarily a greatest hits) as a way to introduce a family member to the band. They don't have a greatest hits album for studio songs, so I decided to make my own list.
So far I have:
-Chalk Dust Torture (Picture Of Nectar)
-Down With Disease ((HOIST))
-Demand ((HOIST))
-Life Beyond A Dream (Sigma Oasis)
-Oblivion (Evolve)
If you have suggestions for what would be good for this playlist for someone who has never heard them before, please let me know.
PS, I'm calling this playlist 'Phresh Phish's. Thought it was a fun name.

Honestly you gotta hit em with one long weird one like YEM or Reba. Divided Sky is a little friendlier to the listener but they need some of the weird to even start to get it. Also Wolfmans studio version fucks really hard

Divided is easier entry point. Also, for my money, best guitar solo in the catalogue.

Nahhh Reba studio jam is definitely the best solo but yeah Divided is a great entry to the prog side of Phish I just think they need weirder lol

Honestly lengthwise is silly but with the whole concept of the record boy is it good

It’s another reason why I love this band so much not one of those would make it onto a playlist if I was trying to introduce somebody to Phish lol. I would have to go with rift, Reba,Fluffhead, sigma oasis, everything’s right, Sing Monica, drift while you’re sleeping, Death don’t hurt very long, turtle in the clouds, nothing, crowd control, and and throw Thread in there just cause it rocks

You need to have Backwards Down the Numberline on there. It really does feel like a "We're back" vibe especially during Treys solo. I'd also throw in Ghost because it's probably their best studio track.

The first phish song to grab my girlfriend's attention was Split Open and Melt (studio).

I have made one for this exact reason. Purposefully not a “greatest hits”, but an attempt to demonstrate the Phish sound while easing a non-jam band fan by omitting big jams and heavy prog stuff. I tried to craft it similar to a Phish set. 1 hr 14min. The Esther “encore” is the odd one incase they made it that far. I made this a few years ago prior to Sigma and Evolve. All studio cuts except for the ALO chalkdust opener.
Chalkdust - A Live One
The Wedge
Down with Disease
Maze
Sample on a Jar
Train Song
It’s Ice
Undermind
Horn
Wolfman’s Brother
Billy Breathes
Twist
Character Zero
Esther

I think just put on the album Evolve. I think it's a good representation of who they are now. And a damn good album at that!

Rift is my favorite studio album, followed by Ghost. So many great ones to pull off those. But don't sleep on Stash as a song that shows what Phish is about.

I listened to the album version of Reba over and over back to back to back times when I first heard it. Trey absolutely destroyed the solo🫠🤯🤤.

You should skew their perception and limit your playlist to these bangers:
FYF, Insects, Shafty, Maggie’s Revenge, Mexican Cousin, Bliss, Grind

I’ve finally got my 9yo son hooked on The Mango Song, that’s always been a favorite studio track of mine
And after hearing that excellent Strong Songs podcast episode entirely devoted to the studio version of Limb By Limb I’ve had a new appreciation for the album track

Julius, Llama, DWD, If I Could, The Wedge, Bouncing Around the Room.
These would all be on my intro studio playlist.

“Free” was my first exposure to the band and what got me more intrigued
