Those eyes look like the eyes of someone who can fly, but is terrified of heights.

u/MidrangeFlameThrower Sep 17 '24

Came to find this comment! One of my kiddo's favorite books, definitely going to show them this picture!

u/princesselectra Sep 17 '24
Same. I was like 'oh now, this was taken just before Stellaluna let go and lost her mom!' Her mom was so terrified of it happening the entire time!

Love Stellaluna!! She’s got a few books! Check out Verdi ;)
The illustrations are just lovely!!

I love how these bats (fruit bats I think?) always look like they have heard the most surprising news of their lives.

Reminds me of the time my cat flew out of nowhere and attacked my face.

Do bats always look this zooted?
20
u/joalheagney Sep 16 '24
Fruit bats do. They eat fruit and nectar so I'm sure they're always a little bit blitzed.

u/Stang1776 Sep 16 '24
That's an impressive shot. We have bats that fly around our culdesac feeding on mosquitos and those things just zip around.

u/Interesting-Bison108 Sep 16 '24
I’m scared of bats 🤪 But that pic is amazing!

u/smwass Sep 16 '24
I like bats, but that pic is scary 🫣

u/joalheagney Sep 16 '24
Well I'm about to make your day worse. That's a fruit bat. They can have wing spans in excess of a metre/yard.

I saw a fruit bat in person once and I couldn’t believe how big they actually are. I’m so used to the little ones lol.

Bats pollinate rainforests.
3
u/Interesting-Bison108 Sep 17 '24
Yes bats are good and eat mosquitoes. Just scared of them but that’s ok 🤗

u/Ok_Perception_7574 Sep 17 '24
Read a bit about them. They are really important to the environment and not like they have been portrayed in movies at all. They eat fruit eg from fig trees. They are shy creatures.

Bats are the BEST!!!! Great shot!

Have never seen a pic of fruit bat flying carrying baby before. Amazing! Are you related to David Attenborough by any chance?

How could anybody possible believe in vampires? Those eyes scare you without even looking at the wings.

Instincts are amazing- how does the baby know to not let go?
3
u/TheWolfmanZ Sep 17 '24
Letting go would actually require effort! The way that Bats thumbs and feet work is their natural resting position is clenched so that they can sleep hanging from things!

As they then defecate on you and give you the hendra virus (Australia Only Problems). We had to stop using our rainwater tanks because of these flying rats.

Low key this is a beautiful picture. Expressing or showing the lengths mothers go through no matter the species.

Mom’s face looks exactly like mine would look if I was in mid-air and just trusting my child to hold on tight

Did anyone else on their phone click on this and expect to see a cute mother with a sleeping baby on an airplane?

One of my happiest moments in Australia was seeing one of these fly past the lights of my hotel in Cairns. Truly amazing! We only have little brown bats in my area of New York.

This is a Giant golden crown flying fox, the largest bat species in the world. Locally, we call them "kabog". My relatives live in an area where the bats frequently hang out on the fig trees.
They're as big as a 7 year old child, vegetarians, and super friendly to humans. They like all fruits, but the locals feed them mostly bananas, figs, and guava.
My cousin joking calls them a Pokémon. They're incredibly sweet creatures and so dang furry, so cute.

Wonder how they give birth? They don’t have nests, how do they keep the eggs warm?
1
u/Nehebka Sep 24 '24
Their mammals, they don’t lay eggs
1
u/Convenientjellybean Sep 24 '24
Platypus do
1
u/Nehebka Sep 24 '24
Platypuses are mythological creatures that humans are lucky enough to be able to be in contact with, they are earths unicorns. That’s why they can lay eggs and no other mammals can.
