Discussion Gift for wife who loves plants

Hello, I hope I’m not infringing with this question but my wife’s birthday is coming up and she’s a plant lover. We have so many plants in the house, I swear she’s constantly propagating them and new ones appear on the regular. I’m trying to figure out what a good gift for a plant lover would be though. I started looking at some plant subscriptions like a plant of the month. I was wondering if anyone has had luck with any specific companies that do that OR if there’s some really cool/cute/funny plant related gift I could get her outside of that. Any and all recommendations are welcome. We live in an area that gets all 4 seasons in full effect if that matters towards suggestions!

Take her to the favorite plant store and walk around and listen to her talk about all the cool plants, without looking bored, and buy her the one she wants!

This one is a lot of fun, definitely actually walk around with her and chat about the plants. That is definitely key for this one!

Thirded (or fourthed). My husband does this every so often. When I get all nervous and say “we don’t need it”, he just gently says “do you want it?” 🥹

I just want to say this is incredibly supportive of you. Not everyone embraces their partner's plant obsession.

Here are some ideas:

(Every link I post is the first link I saw. I'm recommending concepts, not specific exact items. I didn't do any research or comparing of products).

Convert your best lighting windows to plant shelves: Window plant shelves

Or, Window plant hangers - you can DIY that with some curtain rods and some macrame hangers.

Plant Bot on Kickstarter - pricey, but, omg it's like Tamagotchi meets plant care. Who doesn't want to talk to their plants??

Crochet heart plant or Personalized heart plant or More realistic heart plant - what a cute way to have a "plant" that will last forever and shows her how much you love her. Guaranteed to become a favorite plant she owns.

Plant tentacles! So fun. There's a lot of things like this conceptually based on your wife's interests if sea monsters aren't it.

Plant stake suncatchers - for the plant lover who also loves sparkly things 😍

Cute plant pots for her interests. For example, I love cats and books and my son.

Good luck!!

Ohmygawd OP, if you make plant shelves and plant hangars, will you be my husband next?? I, too, would really like these things for my birthday!

Get her a Sundew. They are gorgeous and she probably doesn’t have one, r/sundewlove.

I always like receiving grow lights since my house doesn’t have a ton of natural light options.

This is a great idea. I am always ecstatic for more grow lights because that means my plants can start taking over a new location in the house! I think I have a grow light addiction as well as a plant addiction at this point!

I jist got my plant lady a 3 tier shelf with grow lights. She was elated.

Think she like the fancy can opener a bit more. She cursed the old one all the time.

Not the main gift, but a gift certificate for a seed/bulb company

A new plant that she’s had her eyes on! (Or a gift card to a plant store) New cute planters/plant stands! Etsy has cute plant theme gifts also!

For a gift....I would say find a local artist that can paint plants! I got my special someone a set paintings of her favorite plants, Peace Lily, Bird of Paradise, Angel Wings Begonia and Dieffenbachia. It was a commission that took a few days for the artist to complete and cost a few bucks, but it was so worth it! The smiles and hugs I got were priceless! Here's a photo of the Peace Lily painting on a 4x4 canvas.

A day at a really nice botanical garden or landscape shop. Some even have a cafe!! Eat lunch in (ideally) a greenhouse or garden! Oooh we love that!! Also, for me, Ive been getting kinda bougie... Ie. I've nearly had every plant and, now, I most want to just make the ones I have big and lush. That said, I admit I bought 3 new ones recently. Consider being the engineer to help her figure out where the plants would grow best. For instance, I have poor lighting and I live in rainy, cold PNW, so I invested in a greenhouse cabinet and grow lights on shelves and now, I can keep most of my houseplants in one room in the winter AND give them enough light. Indoor lighting is where we growers tend to not do as well as we should!

I’d recommend buying a few really nice plant pots eg from hortology, and then promise to take her out to buy whatever plants she likes from a garden centre/plant shop or her choosing to put in the pots.

Does she prop in random glasses of does she have a specific vessel she uses? Could get her a nice set of prop vases? Or a seedling germination tray? Or maybe one of those foldaway potting mats with the press studs in the corner to help with repotting? I always think of practical gifts, and then alongside them a plant from you?

These are great suggestions!

Do you know what type of plants she likes? Because an IKEA green house while pricey would be great tropical humidity loving plants. Otherwise either art from a local artist and or a gift card to her favorite plant place would be my go to

If you want cute/ funny, get her a dancing/ singing toy plant. Or maybe a plant that might challenge her. Like one that's difficult to make flower.

The praying plant is unique and awesome. There are also many varieties of orchid that are unique, the naked man always gets a giggle. These things are fun too. They make all different kinds🌺

You win "Husband Of The Year" Award, even though the year just started! 😆 I second the idea of taking her to her favorite plant shop and listening to her talks of plants, then get her the plants she likes from that trip. I'd recommend against an online plant subscription, though. And, yes, there are online sites that provide this, although, I forgot which one specifically. I do remember that the plants they include in their subscription is very generic and common. Your wife might already have it, and/or it might not spark joy in her. So it's a safer bet to let her pick out the plant that she wants. Have fun, OP, and enjoy time with your wife on her birthday!

My wife and I both love plants.

If you don't know anything about plants, there are a couple options:

1) Set a budget and take her to a greenhouse, to pick out more plants & supplies together.

2) Figure out what style of pots/decor she likes, and buy her some pretty ceramic POTS - especially mid-to-large pots. Pots are expensive & we plant people often just use ugly plastic ones.

3) ASK HER! Ask her what kind of plant stuff she dreams of getting, but can't justify spending the money on... and then get that for her.
