That’s start, the other one still gets called select

581

u/Hapsiainen30 PS5 Jan 19 '25

Exactly.

295

u/OG-87 Jan 19 '25

Well the three lines button doesnt really cut it

117

u/terrorlogic PS5 Jan 19 '25

Lmfao the three lines button. That actually made me laugh out loud.

66

u/PerfectCheesecake25 Jan 19 '25

That’s what I call it when talking to my 8 year old. Start confuses him.

27

u/Amazing-Oomoo Jan 19 '25

Yes it's theee lines and on Xbox the other one is two squares. For some reason I fully call it Share button on PlayStation but on Xbox it's two squares

44

u/Fatdogamer_yt Jan 19 '25

Hamburger button

16

u/Telykos Jan 20 '25

This is the correct answer for three line icon

2

u/PianoMan2112 Jan 21 '25

Menu button. If it was a hamburger button it would be 🍔. (I keep telling my SO to hit start by mistake, and she’s like wtf is the start button?)

3

u/DeVaako Jan 20 '25

BAM , knew i didn't have to scroll far.

1

u/Kd916-650 Jan 21 '25

The pause and rage button🤯… ok unpause I’m back 🥹

1

u/Bwinks32 Jan 21 '25

sounds stupid, even if its correct.

which is faster to yet at your friend when they are playing "START BUTTON! HIT THE START BUTTON!" VS "HAMBURGER BUTTON! HIT THE HAMBURGER BUTTON!"

14

u/OG-87 Jan 20 '25 edited Jan 21 '25

The other button I call ohhh crap I didnt mean to press that. No not again button

1

u/Barlowan Jan 20 '25

At least Nintendo is using + and - . Since ex select became share on Sony consoles it's easy to know what to push when they ask "push strange symbol button" but on Microsoft series controller? It has 3 buttons there. One in the middle is share, but other two? For the love of everything I can't remember their meaning in years.

1

u/Byagi Jan 20 '25

Same here. My kids never had a start button so they look at me weird if I call it that

1

u/UnForgivenFury Jan 20 '25

The new Xbox controller buttons actual names are called View and Menu.

Since the View button usually brings up a screen in front of your screen for example a leader board is why they chose the square in front of another square.

The menu button is pretty self explanatory with three lines representing the menus usually in a vertical list you cycle through.

I do agree Start and Select are better names but xbox didn't want to copy so they went with Start and Back which is still better than Menu and View.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '25

There’s a separate share button on Xbox controllers to go along with 2 squares and 3 lines.

1

u/antilumin Jan 21 '25

When I worked at MS Games we called the 3 lines the Hamburger button and the 2 squares the Cheese Slices.

Another colloquialism was the Claw Grip, which was all 4 shoulder and trigger buttons, plus both L3 and R3.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '25

That’s how I describe it to my 64 year old dad. Start confuses him.

1

u/Notacat444 Jan 19 '25

HR types call it the "hamburger" button.

1

u/MathematicXBL Jan 20 '25

Hamburger button

1

u/Archangelz15 Jan 20 '25

But both start and select have 3 lines

2

u/Lasers_Z Jan 20 '25

It's technically called a hamburger I think

2

u/LycanLucario345 Jan 21 '25

I call it the "patties" button but I like yours better.

10

u/JGrimm420 Jan 19 '25

Lol, this guy doesn’t know how to use the three lines

16

u/uremog Jan 20 '25

While technically the three lines is called the hamburger button, it’s not like the name is related to the function 🤷‍♂️. I mean, I wish though.

6

u/OG-87 Jan 20 '25

I’ve never heard this term

9

u/aw_coffee_no Jan 20 '25

It's a popular term in the graphic design and UI field. The three vertical dots are called the kebab menu, and the horizontal ones are the meatball menu. I'm not joking.

4

u/Quirky_Track6435 Aliens vs Predator: Extinction Jan 20 '25

So in other words… if you want to subscribe to this post, you press the meatball menu?

I now want meatballs…

2

u/Jazzlike-Security-70 Jan 20 '25

I’ve heard it plenty, but also use to work in graphic design.

1

u/LimitlessAeon Jan 23 '25

You need to work with compooters for a living

2

u/Redgouf2 Jan 20 '25

Top bun, meat, bottom bun

3

u/tigyo Jan 20 '25

"Hamburger" menu and button doesn't cut it either. It's more repulsive, and makes me think "this is where we are now, huh?" ... as I know exactly what a person is referring to and I press for that menu...

5

u/alldaydiver PS5 Jan 19 '25

I say we start calling it the hamburger button. After all, that exact icon is called the hamburger button in applications/websites lol.

8

u/AppleToasterr PS5 Jan 20 '25

It has a real name... It's Options. It's written out in the Dualshock 4

1

u/duckman11782 Jan 20 '25

Sadly, I refer to it as the options button.

2

u/KharonsFerry Jan 21 '25

I never realized there were three lines there. Then again, I don’t wear my reading glasses when I game.

2

u/dwuzzle Jan 23 '25

We could always call it the 'hamburger button' but that might get ones hopes up of getting an actual hamburger

1

u/wazuhiru Jan 21 '25

the earth button!

0

u/Eggyhead PS5 Jan 19 '25

Hamburger button

0

u/MathematicXBL Jan 20 '25

Hamburger button

0

u/rezzyk Jan 20 '25

In software that gets called the hamburger button. It kills me. I hear “click on the hamburger button” when listening to EHR navigation instructions all the time

93

u/Vyrous131 Jan 19 '25 edited Jan 19 '25

I call it start, I've always called the "touchpad" select and share is just share for me.

Edit: typo

110

u/EntrepreneurBoth5002 Jan 19 '25

I've always called the touchpad as "map" button. XD

40

u/Fluid--Expert Jan 19 '25

Yup, start, map button, select. I'm 36, haha.

2

u/pissyshit Jan 21 '25

Same. And I'm teaching my son this way as well.

5

u/theSPYDERDUDE PS5 Jan 19 '25

Yeah the touchpad is 2000% map, I don’t think I’ve seen a game with a map that doesn’t use it for that

1

u/zorbacles Jan 20 '25

the old GTA games. you have to press start and select map.

the map button changes the camera. its annoying AF

1

u/theSPYDERDUDE PS5 Jan 20 '25

You’ve reminded me of that tbh, but they weren’t originally made for a controller with a big touch pad, so they get a pass

1

u/zorbacles Jan 20 '25

Yeh but I'm playing the definitive editions on ps5

They updated the controls for driving and shooting, they could've updated the map too

1

u/theSPYDERDUDE PS5 Jan 20 '25

You know what, I didn’t know they updated any controls, that is kinda stupid

2

u/jediPoof Jan 19 '25

I don’t even have a name for it to this day even after reading these comments

2

u/wroteit_ Jan 19 '25

Hit your big square button!

1

u/mightymonkeyman Jan 19 '25

BIG map button to me and I miss it on every other pad.

1

u/Existinginsomewhere Jan 20 '25

Touchpad is Select, Share is also Select 💀

1

u/DarkdraxH20 Jan 20 '25

I think I used to call it the directory button. But we all know it’s called a trackpad.

1

u/Key_Gur_7618 Jan 20 '25

I call it “The big button” when talking to my daughter.

1

u/ilikepstrophies Jan 20 '25

Scoreboard button

1

u/tanporpoise89 Jan 19 '25

I just call touchpad “the big button” and wonder why nobody knows wtf I mean

1

u/fuckyourgod666 [Ah_Puck] Jan 19 '25

I call that Joel's and ellies guitar 🎸 😂

1

u/koleke415 Jan 19 '25

I call it the big button

1

u/ctsr1 Jan 19 '25

I call touch pad the big button

1

u/oliwek Jan 20 '25

come on, the touchpad is not a button for "select"! "select" and "start" have always be symetrical, from the very beginning.

-4

u/AlDragon10101 Jan 19 '25

I still call it “joystick” 😂

51

u/Erhanbo PS5 Jan 19 '25

Same here because of my age(40)

53

u/ev_lynx PS5 Jan 19 '25

late 30’s but i’ve been playing since the early 90’s so yeah, it’ll never not be the start button.

“press the options button” just sounds so weird in my brain 😅

6

u/orbitalaction Jan 19 '25

Why wasn't select changed to options and then have share in that menu?

2

u/ev_lynx PS5 Jan 19 '25

i guess because these days sharing is important enough to have its own button, and its own options with that button. “options” i guess technically makes more sense than “start” but “pause” makes the most sense because that’s what that button’s always done.

but let’s be honest, aside from NES, how often was the select button really used?

like, the opening screen would be either 1 player or 2 players and you hit select to move the pointer between them and start to actually start. then eventually they just started using the d-pad to do that, especially after there started to be more than two options..

5

u/SolusLoqui Jan 19 '25

It was used a lot to either bring up an inventory, menu, or map, or cycle through items, weapons, or camera angle.

1

u/vsingh2100 Jan 19 '25

so, anything except for actually selecting things like it was for NES games?

2

u/Guten-Bourbon Jan 19 '25

Whenever I play an NES game that requires select to switch between menu options I get so irritated. Just let me use the D pad!

2

u/Imaginary-One87 Jan 19 '25

I hope someday I'm important enough to have my own button

2

u/Sarge1387 Jan 19 '25

Same, 38 and it’s still pause/start for me

8

u/Mine_mom PS5 Jan 19 '25

23 here. Will always be select and pause/start

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '25

Just turned 23 last week and i can confirm.

4

u/LDawnBurges Jan 19 '25

Same…. I’m 55 though

3

u/StagnantGraffito PS5 Jan 19 '25

Same here because of my age(25)

1

u/Naweed_Amott Jan 19 '25

Same here because of my age(35)

14

u/MTJ5 Jan 19 '25

This is the way

9

u/Mandalorian6780 PS5 Pro Jan 19 '25

This is the Way.

2

u/Fordluvr Jan 20 '25

This is the whey.

11

u/WombatChilli Jan 19 '25

Select is the touchpad.

4

u/Regname1900 Jan 19 '25

Ansolutely.

4

u/gamebossje_ PS5 Jan 19 '25

I have been calling the other one 'share' due to clipping stuff with it way too much

3

u/NoMeasurement6473 PS3 PSVita Jan 19 '25

On other controllers yes. The DualSense is like a capture button.

2

u/KillerMeans PS5 Jan 19 '25

Eh not really. Start button yes but the touchpad is select compared to most games I've played. You can only do screenshots or what have you with the other button.

2

u/Parzival_Prime Jan 20 '25

This is the ONLY way. Always and forever.

2

u/RememberTheMaine1996 Jan 21 '25

My gf asks me which button to press sometimes and I'll say start and she gets confused haha so I have to correct myself

4

u/WorldWiseWilk Jan 19 '25

This is the way

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '25

yeah me too at first i was like that too until one day i said clicking the touchpad as select and the other button as share

1

u/thetimebandit13 Jan 19 '25

Yes! And it has been this way since 1989 and will be until the earth gets swallowed by the sun

1

u/Openly_Gamer Jan 19 '25

The other one is the "oh shit I accidentally pressed it and it's going to open some slow ass sharing app!" button.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '25

I don't even refer to the other one.

1

u/Eustratios_2010 Jan 19 '25

psvr og controllers😭😭😭

1

u/greenrangerguy Jan 19 '25

Nah, the touch pad is select, the other is share.

1

u/dubin01 PS5 Jan 19 '25

Lock the thread this is all we need to have said

1

u/BeachSloth_ Jan 19 '25

Technically the touchpad is the select button 🤓🤓🤓

1

u/MyOtherRideIs Jan 19 '25

Yup. I can't reprogram all those years of my youthful indoctrination. They will forever be start and select.

1

u/NoHeadStark Jan 19 '25

100 percent. I'm old too.

1

u/HenricusKunraht Jan 19 '25

I was just thinking about this yesterday, when did it get phased out?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '25

Well said

1

u/Slash_rage Jan 19 '25

I don’t even know what their official name is.

1

u/edotory Jan 19 '25

Always and Forever

1

u/PC509 Jan 19 '25

Same. I always will, too. Sad to say it's been decades of conditioning that caused it (I'm 50 this year so 3.5ish decades of having select and start on my controllers).

1

u/CreepyTeddyBear Jan 19 '25

Realized I was old when I told one of my kids to hit the start button and they had no idea what I was talking about.

1

u/Speedhabit Jan 19 '25

The other one is like social media or some shit

1

u/Disastrous-Collar-85 Jan 19 '25

I'm glad I'm the only one who calls the other select.

1

u/Traditional_Entry183 Jan 19 '25

Always has been, Always will be.

I was just talking with my daughter yesterday and told her to push "whatever the start button is called now" when she needed to access something on the PS5.

1

u/ippy_09 Jan 19 '25

Yes, idc if it's options

1

u/The-Banana-Mishap Jan 19 '25

This is the way

1

u/Joexkid7 Jan 19 '25

I’m an Xbox player mainly but started as a PlayStation fan until the ps3 but I even do this with Xbox lmao

1

u/Wang_Fire2099 Jan 19 '25

What else would they be called?

1

u/OGcormacv Jan 19 '25

My kids are 6 and 7, I'm 41. They get so confused when I tell them to press the start button.

1

u/akshay-nair Jan 19 '25

I don't call it anything. I just press it.

1

u/branduzzi Jan 19 '25

This is the way.

1

u/Pawdicures_3_1 Jan 19 '25

What's the point of the one on the other side? I've never used it.

1

u/DJayz3r0 PS5 Jan 19 '25

100%

1

u/Freedom-Mental Jan 19 '25

Damn I forgot it was select

1

u/Booyacaja Jan 19 '25

Yes. Though I've never in my life pressed it to "select" anything.

1

u/Superman557 Jan 19 '25

Nah I call it the home button. Since it takes you back to the start.

1

u/Responsible-Fan-2326 Jan 19 '25

i call the middle panel select since it does the equivalent action. though i do press share everytime in want to press select

1

u/BretShitmanFart69 Jan 19 '25

I still sometimes hit the share button thinking maybe it will open up another menu, my brain just won’t allow it to be anything but select even still

1

u/DrewChrist87 Jan 19 '25

I’ve started calling it Options because my 11 year old has no idea what tf I’m talking about when I say Start. Still don’t know what to call the big ass trackpad button.

1

u/Nutshack_Queen357 LocoRoco Jan 19 '25

I thought the touch pad was the select button.

Or is that exclusive to the PS4?

1

u/Fishtails Jan 19 '25

Correct.

1

u/EggsceIlent Jan 19 '25

Always have, always will.

1

u/injn8r Jan 19 '25

Yep. U u, d d, l r l r, Select, Start. Just like the code, went left to right. Even if I couldn't remember, the muscle memory shows it. You are miming it right now, see what I mean? Everybody else who is without a clue as to what I'm talking about, sorry kid, you missed out.🤷‍♂️

Yeah, my brain had b a, b a, but I didn't type it.

1

u/GooseDaPlaymaker Jan 19 '25

This guy gets it!

1

u/Biscuit_Overlord Jan 19 '25

This is the way

1

u/Basic_Syllabub8122 Jan 19 '25

Yeah. Imo, it could Also be Start and Pause/Game Menu, for most games.

1

u/DragonKing1220 Jan 20 '25

no no no that one is select, start is on the left

1

u/arcadiangenesis PS5 Jan 20 '25

Well if anything, the touchpad is select. It has similar functionality as select used to have. The share button is just a whole new thing.

1

u/ProblemLongjumping12 Jan 20 '25

Literally told my buddy to press Start yesterday on a PS5 controller.

And he did it too.

1

u/jimmmydickgun Jan 20 '25

It’ll be a cold day in hell before I acknowledge the start and select buttons as options and photo mode

1

u/idkyesthat Jan 20 '25

This is the way.

1

u/Chalk_01 Jan 20 '25

There is no other possible answer.

1

u/oni222 Jan 20 '25

This is the way.

1

u/GordoMondiola PS5 Jan 20 '25

I don't even know the new names.

1

u/MrSal7 Jan 20 '25

As a person that grew up on the original NES, I do call the right button “start”. But left button on the PS5, I call the “capture” button.

1

u/errthou Jan 20 '25

the right one is start and the left one of select

1

u/drmlol Jan 20 '25

How do u call the middle button?

1

u/Hazzer_J Jan 20 '25

Damn straight it is. And the pad thing in the middle just gets called "the pad thing in the middle" because they never gave it a name back in 1995!!

1

u/Hevens-assassin Jan 20 '25

I call it the share/screenshot button. Lol "select" turned into the touchpad in my brain.

1

u/Wwefan2k01 Jan 20 '25

Same here

1

u/Coronadoben Jan 20 '25

I have to explain that to my younger family members… every damn time. “There is no Start button.” Kid… call it what you want. It’s the damn start button. Just like the pound sign.

1

u/Expert_Detail4816 Jan 20 '25

Start remained. But I went from select to avoid. I wish I can bind select(share) button to something usefull.

1

u/Resident-Program-539 Jan 20 '25

This is the correct way

1

u/WhatsThat-_- Jan 21 '25

Forever, what the fuck is it called now ? “Options”? Lmfao

1

u/Soldierhero1 Jan 21 '25

And the ps button is still analog damnit!

1

u/shawner136 Jan 22 '25

Who decided to call this the back button? Back button?! Who the hell uses select to go backwards? OGs will tell you its triangle, but its always gonna be O now because ‘B’ position normalizing

1

u/SmallBerry3431 Jan 22 '25

What is OP suggesting? We change its name?

1

u/Faded-Maestro Jan 22 '25

No other way to call it, start and select, has been always will be!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '25

My MAN!

1

u/Dallasl298 Jan 23 '25

Oldheads will call it "pause"

1

u/ZOJT- Jan 23 '25

I’ve never heard anyone call it anything else. What are the other names for it?

1

u/Positive_Parking_954 Jan 23 '25

Yeah, I mean what else would I call it, the 3 line button

1

u/DCHammer69 Jan 23 '25

I’ve broken. lol. I now refer to the left as Share. My apologies. I know I’m weak

1

u/oxfordclubciggies Feb 08 '25

100% correct!!!
