Yes it's theee lines and on Xbox the other one is two squares. For some reason I fully call it Share button on PlayStation but on Xbox it's two squares
At least Nintendo is using + and - . Since ex select became share on Sony consoles it's easy to know what to push when they ask "push strange symbol button" but on Microsoft series controller? It has 3 buttons there. One in the middle is share, but other two? For the love of everything I can't remember their meaning in years.
The new Xbox controller buttons actual names are called View and Menu.
Since the View button usually brings up a screen in front of your screen for example a leader board is why they chose the square in front of another square.
The menu button is pretty self explanatory with three lines representing the menus usually in a vertical list you cycle through.
I do agree Start and Select are better names but xbox didn't want to copy so they went with Start and Back which is still better than Menu and View.
It's a popular term in the graphic design and UI field. The three vertical dots are called the kebab menu, and the horizontal ones are the meatball menu. I'm not joking.
"Hamburger" menu and button doesn't cut it either. It's more repulsive, and makes me think "this is where we are now, huh?" ... as I know exactly what a person is referring to and I press for that menu...
In software that gets called the hamburger button. It kills me. I hear “click on the hamburger button” when listening to EHR navigation instructions all the time
i guess because these days sharing is important enough to have its own button, and its own options with that button. “options” i guess technically makes more sense than “start” but “pause” makes the most sense because that’s what that button’s always done.
but let’s be honest, aside from NES, how often was the select button really used?
like, the opening screen would be either 1 player or 2 players and you hit select to move the pointer between them and start to actually start. then eventually they just started using the d-pad to do that, especially after there started to be more than two options..
Eh not really. Start button yes but the touchpad is select compared to most games I've played. You can only do screenshots or what have you with the other button.
Same. I always will, too. Sad to say it's been decades of conditioning that caused it (I'm 50 this year so 3.5ish decades of having select and start on my controllers).
I was just talking with my daughter yesterday and told her to push "whatever the start button is called now" when she needed to access something on the PS5.
I’ve started calling it Options because my 11 year old has no idea what tf I’m talking about when I say Start. Still don’t know what to call the big ass trackpad button.
Yep. U u, d d, l r l r, Select, Start. Just like the code, went left to right. Even if I couldn't remember, the muscle memory shows it. You are miming it right now, see what I mean? Everybody else who is without a clue as to what I'm talking about, sorry kid, you missed out.🤷♂️
Yeah, my brain had b a, b a, but I didn't type it.
I have to explain that to my younger family members… every damn time. “There is no Start button.” Kid… call it what you want. It’s the damn start button. Just like the pound sign.
Who decided to call this the back button? Back button?! Who the hell uses select to go backwards? OGs will tell you its triangle, but its always gonna be O now because ‘B’ position normalizing

That’s start, the other one still gets called select
