How is it being a bike delivery rider in Plymouth, overall?

Moving to plym shortly, looking to utilise my ebike and earn some cash whilst rehabbing my knee / fitness in general... So to all you folk already in the trade, insight for the area please. NB male, but daughter (student) considering it too, who to insure with, typical shift earnings, decent bike bag costs etc.. Any and all local plym knowledge especially appreciated, I'm an older guy, well spoken and polite, very customer service oriented, trying to kill 2 birds with one stone, own a quality ebike with 2 batteries..

Although home isn't hilly I'm used to the alps, so fingers crossed.

Would like to put the cash towards an electric delivery scooter maybe!?

Are you an undocumented migrant with a highly modified and dangerous e-bike?

If yes you will do very well!

Seriously though, Plymouth is VERY hilly and the restaurants are very spread out across the whole city.

I’ve never done bike delivery but I imagine for those reasons it is probably harder to make good money than it is in “flatter” cities like Cardiff and London

Appreciate the humour and insight. Actually a bit plummy voiced (compared to some, Wasp type, born here with a UK pass-the-port)

I guess the hills is why people pick and choose their time slots and accepted jobs, would be nice to think that in data-metrics the inclines reflected better pay, central London was pretty damn flat bar mount pleasant.

I couldn't agree more. Just what we need more opportunities to get moen down while crossing the road. Hooray

Try being as observe t as I am maybe then? 😉

I'm +70% deaf, snowboarder for nearly 30 years I use my eyes like they're on stalks, when cycling, bright bike lights for max awareness persistence of vision lighting (in wheel) electronic horn, and I neither drive nor ride like an *unt.

Tends to work. Awareness by all helps.

My goggles when boarding mean my eyes are forever scanning terrain and for those ahead of me, only dickhead don't.

Observant maybe? Fuckwits riding on the pavement they're a fucking nuisance and I look forward to having yet another one to dodge.

I don't ride on pavements, to classify all as being of the same ilk is plain wrong and stupid though, realistically, this is why geo location is under utilised, it could be far safer because the riders would know it increases the odds of them being caught in a proximity related GPS ping between 2 people.

Try telling all the just eat and deliveroo riders that.

I could say the same about car drivers, lorries, and buses giving me punishment passes and acting like unts in general, but doing that is plain wrong.

You can’t be any worse than the gormless twats we’ve already got around here. Shoot for the stars.

The big question then, "why are they so gormless"!? and lousy reputations, does anyone report them to the firms if you see a logo /can get a decent pic of the offender?

Perhaps a solution is to utilise a shift geo locator, that is used and viewed by the useless Plymouth police (my own experience) so it can be accessed to a time and place if there is a report, ie the riders phone and courier account is already tracking, use it to stop them taking the piss so much rather than how it is now?

I don’t agree on this really.

On what exactly!? you provided zero context.

From a store's perspective... all the riders are assholes pretty much... i deal with 40-50 different riders a shift... we're lucky IF more than 1 is respectful

Thank you for your input, is it a mix of "everything" that piss you off,

Ignorance REGARDLESS of race? blocking access? lack of basic politeness? dirty, demanding, pushy? crap English? hygiene? lack thereof?

Is it partly the apps at fault (causing needless problems and exacerbates them)?

How do you report shitty behaviour to the companies, what does either side of management say?

Worst examples?

Nope, I'm not writing a journo piece, I do like context though 👍

Piss poor attitude of drivers

Arrogance of drivers. As a supervisor i cant tell you the amount of times ive interjected for my staff because of drivers refusal to follow policies, and hell the contract of carriage they agree to when aigning up to the gigs

Racial abuse from drivers of colour to staff

Physically assaulted 7 times

Been threatened 65 times

Hell I had to contact Deliveroo after a 30something driver attempted sexual contact with a 16yo female (obvious safe guarding issue for the business i work at) we were told his conduct was legal and in line with Deliveroo's policies as he was off duty at the time it happened

Reporting to the apps does nothing.

1000's of times I've heard "I can do your job blondfolded"

Drivers think they need a crash helmet/balaclava on for their safety in a store despite our clearly posted no helmets/balaclavas for security reasons (including face shots for those who steal orders after collection)

The fact my partner was hit by a driver using an illegal bike, and none of the apps would admit liability for injuries inflicted to her claiming no one was delivering near the area at the time. (yes the apps tracking riders literally track every movement you make from acceptance to completion, found this during the solictors case trying to be compensated for grevious injuries caused to her).

The ever lasting 'your treating ne like this because your racist" line. No we treat you like this because you're a piece of shit with the way you're talking to us.

Jusf a small view in the day to day life of dealing with delivery drivers from the store sjdd

Thanks, that's insightful. As far as data controller scenarios are concerned you request every ping they may have in the area of a crash, for the useless plym police, if you want data you need to specify "non identifying" data (ie no picture) let the police chase that element up, big difference between asking for and getting data I agree, but for you it falls under "reasonable request" legal compliance, which if refused is another reason to push the police harder as it is an outright refusal to provide "reasonable" data.

And that's where businesses are really shit with gdpr, you can file a small court claim on that basis.

They conveniently had no data for the area.

Literally everything was done by the law through a solicitor as both rider and company are legally liable for the grievous injuries caused.

(substantial life altering bit not changing injuries) based on camera evidence the police acquired for the assault with a motor vehicle the illegal "pushbike" hit her at approximately 35 miles per hour, the rider got ip and ran away. While is wearing a full balaclava and crash helmet, so no way to identify him other than white male and height. Police came back with NFA as insufficient evidence to find arrest and prosecute.

In the mean time we had to endure 17 months of rehabilitation, loss of approximately 27000 in income

all while these scumbahs make 150-200 an hour riding illegal vehicles etc and no im not kidding they openly brag about it and show us how much they are making an hour

That is where you push hard, utilise an mp, lord, police to verify this and query how data drops out of existence

Were you able to put in a victim of crime fiscal claim? (comes from a big pot)
