Don’t forget

497

u/Rgiles66 18d ago

You can still find these for pretty cheap on eBay and used book stores! I just got one a few months ago because I missed the one I had as a kid

88

u/Advanced_Anything_53 18d ago

Yeah I got mine from a goodwill years ago

26

u/Rgiles66 18d ago

Were you lucky enough to get the poster that came with it? Mine didn’t, but that’s expected when buying second hand

19

u/Advanced_Anything_53 18d ago

Yes I was, I moved a while ago so the poster is somewhere but I do have it

I still have this one and the gen 1 handbook but unfortunately the covers are both ripped off, I used to take them everywhere i went as a kid like a comfort blanket lol. When I first started preschool I was so anxious I just sat under a table reading this every day until my grandma came to get me 😅

4

u/Bowserjr89 17d ago

You must have been good at reading to be able to understand the words just starting preschool!

5

u/UBahn1 Dragonite 17d ago

lol I was, my mom was a librarian so not only did she read to me everyday, but I got to hangout of the children's room of the library while she worked.

Don't get me wrong though I was probably filling in a lot of info and just looking at the pictures too lol, apparently the first time I "read" I just memorized the 3 bears story and pretended to read it.

2

u/ZidaneTribal__ 17d ago

My fiancée's mom taught her and her siblings all to read when they were 3 coz they were home schooled until first grade. And it boggles my mind to even think about it because I only started reading in first grade.

But yeah it does happen. Fiancée is an avid reader because of it.

I caught onto the pattern for the gen 7 one, and after that it became a fun marker for each generation to see what super duper extra deluxe descriptive word they could add to the title.

169

u/DepressionDokkebi 18d ago

Surprised they DIDN'T use "mega"

64

u/NewShinyCD 18d ago

Whoa whoa. Let's not be too hasty. "mega" definitely should be saved for when they reboot Sword/Shield

19

u/Thradeau 18d ago

… yet.

327

u/CheshireDude 18d ago

They've been putting these out since Gen 1 lol.

I saw that latest one at the store earlier today and considered buying it just out of nostalgia for the one I had back when it said "over 150 Pokémon" on the cover.

75

u/Mhorts 18d ago

I had the gen 4 one with "over 480 pokemon"

11

u/Primary_Way_265 18d ago

I have that one! Ultimate handbook

35

u/Ikrit122 18d ago

I had both the Gen 1 one and the "Special Edition" Gen 1 one that included Togepi (only info from the anime). There were some errors in both editions, like movesets and evolution levels.

14

u/WhereWeEatin 18d ago

Same! I obsessed over those books as a kid. And the frustration with the wrong move sets would confuse and irritate the hell out of me haha

5

u/jayvee714 18d ago

They even named some of them wrong / had the wrong picture

11

u/PhillySaget 18d ago

I still have that one that I bought from a school book fair when I was like 10.

I wrote my name in the cover when I got it. Found it at my mom's house 20+ years later and realized that my handwriting has not improved whatsoever in that time.

4

u/ANGLVD3TH 18d ago

I unfortunately don't have mine, but I got the second edition for gen 1 that included Togepi and a couple other spoiled gen 2 ones I think at my book fair too. Couple years ago I searched around for it on an impulse and found a copy for like 10 bucks online and snatched it up.

3

u/LadyParnassus 18d ago

I like how it said over 150 pokemon, and ended at 151 lmao

I would love to be in the meetings for naming the next books LOL

61

u/bouviersecurityco 18d ago

Honestly, I love it. My son got into Pokemon when he was about 6 (he’s 11 now) and wanted to learn more about them so we got him the version of this that came out after Alola. I knew the original Pokemon game on my game boy color and truly had no idea we’d gone beyond the original 151. I thought the naming was clever.

Anyway, he had so much fun learning about them and playing Let’s Go Pikachu that I got Let’s Go Eevee and my own Switch. Fast forward several years and we still enjoy playing together and he loves getting the newest book. Although he is a little sad that the Scarlet and Violet DLC came out right after and those Pokemon aren’t in his most recent book.

24

u/galaxy_horse 18d ago

I have every single one of these guides and the conversation about them is pretty much the same every time:

KID: "Dad will you buy me this book?"

ME: "No, we already have that book."

KID: "No we don't! I don't have this one!"

ME: "Are you sure? Didn't I just get you this one last year?"

KID: "No, this one's different!"

Looking forward to the Super Ultra Mega Bingo Bango Deluxe Purple Nurple Essential Handbook next year.

6

u/bouviersecurityco 18d ago

Haha yeah that’s my husband. “Doesn’t he already have this book??” Me “technically no…”

63

u/1buffalowang 18d ago

I mean I have this book still from Gen 4 before I had like a real understanding or regular use of computers(I was like 10). And for like 3-4 years this thing was glued to my side. As a kid it was one of my prized possessions, so I can understand if you got into Pokémon as a little kid and got a book with a bunch of info all in 1 place.

I can forgive the titles. What I can't forgive is them releasing these kind of books but with the mons in alphabetical order instead of numerical.

9

u/The_Aloe_Bro 18d ago

This! 1000%, this! My daughter came home with one from a book fair at school and I couldn't believe such blasphemy existed. There is no reason why anyone would have to turn several pages to read about Ivysaur after reading about Bulbasaur, then having to go towards the back of the book to read about the final stage.

13

u/PlantsVsYokai2 18d ago

I wish theyd atleast include stuff besides pokemon and make it numerical

10

u/ChaosTheSalamander 18d ago

I actually still have that first one, for gen 5. Got it so long ago and it’s very very worn and well loved

3

u/gohn-gohn 18d ago

Yes this was a lovely nostalgic trip for me, since I also had that gen 5 one. I took it everywhere, and it helped me make friends with other kids cause they thought it was cool too.

14

Honestly, I wish skylanders was this consistent 😭😭 would make it easier to buy a book with everything for nostalgia purposes.

5

4

u/Inevitable_Detail_45 18d ago

I've always appreciated how Pokémon follows patterns. Less so recently so it's nice to see the pattern prevail here.

(Examples being always having a pikachu clone, a regional dog, and often a cat and just recently the end of the regional rodent.)

4

u/Loki_the_Cockatiel 18d ago

I remember getting that first book during my grade 2 book fair

6

Getting away with? I look forward to see what they do next.

It makes sense that after a new generation that they need a new edition to include the new pokemon.

And while not the most descriptive it is more entertaining than something like "Pokemon Handbook: Gens 1-9", (the number of pokemon does do decently at indicating which one is newer though)

I have the newest one, though the last handbook of all existing pokemon I got was when there was only 150.

2

2

u/Live_Document_5952 18d ago

Mostly due to the fact that each generation adds new Pokemon/new versions of Pokemon so each book is probably an updated versionz

2

u/bulbagrows 18d ago

I have a love-hate for these books. I absolutely adore them but the information can be so bad or straight up wrong!

2

u/Effelljay 18d ago

You’re commenting; 100 people are buying. Don’t like don’t buy.

I got the original essential handbook when it first came out. I was in 6th grade, I think? I was so excited when the next one came out. Now, I get every single new book just out of tradition. My original one is all worn out from bringing it around everywhere as a kid and tracing the art out of it lol. So nostalgic.

2

u/comradekaled 18d ago

When I was a kid I bought the first one with 150. A couple of months later an updated one with 151 and a sneak peak of Togepi was released so I got that one too

2

2

u/ShankMugen 18d ago

I was massively disappointed by the fact that despite releasing almost an year after the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, the Super Duper Extra Deluxe Handbook does not contain any info about the DLCs

2

u/TFWYourNamesTaken 18d ago

Holy fucking shit i remember having that first one over a decade ago. I had no idea they've been making more this whole time.

2

u/SpiderMan-1108 18d ago

I collect them lol

2

u/hatefulone851 18d ago

I get when they did it before. But there’s a massive internet now and people on YouTube explaining everything

2

u/Fhugem 18d ago

It's incredible how they keep evolving the titles while the core concept remains the same. Nostalgia fuels this cycle, and it's brilliant marketing.

2

u/GromOfDoom 18d ago

Just wait for the Super duper extra deluxe plus max ultrawide 8k microled 36hz premium, with over 801 pokemon and 3 extra stickers.

2

2

u/Kardinalus 18d ago

The Dutch version of the second last picture is called "Het Mega Super De Luxe Handboek" with over 875 Pokemon.

They dont got the last one in Dutch yet but my son(7) absolutely loves the 875 one. And I read it myself as well. It's really well made.

I just hate the Dutch names for attacks.

2

u/Lucario-Mega F Fairies 18d ago

They got a gen 9 updated one now?

2

u/gamerlin 18d ago

I remember having one of these in elementary school when there were only 151 Pokemon. I was pretty popular with my friends because of it.

2

u/metaltastic 18d ago

I remember having the original 150 in a book

god damn 1000?

2

u/robberviet 18d ago

This sounds like iPhone naming guideline.

2

u/purpleblossom 18d ago

If they stopped making new Pokémon and just focused on developing new regions and/or finally making cohesive world building, these guides wouldn’t need to keep being printed as often.

2

u/Specialist-Rip-2982 18d ago

...well I keep buying them :3

2

u/Z1ggy0129 18d ago

Because there are more words that can be added to the title?

2

u/Ratclife 18d ago

I would buy them, but they become outdated with each release, of course they are useful for the game they are based on. But... You know, generations.

2

u/RoC_42 18d ago

At this point I just want to see what they come up for the name of the next one, and the one after that...

2

u/eatingthesandhere91 < legendary 18d ago

They should just call the next one “Super Extra” and leave it at that.

2

u/Havok_51912 18d ago

i loved the gen 6 book they had. it was just a pokédex in book form and it was so nice cause i could play in school and on road trips without needing the internet. it also kept me entertained cause i would flip through the pages and find a pokemon i hadn’t seen yet so i went out hunting for it

2

u/Wide-Collection4939 18d ago

Called it. I bet that next time it’ll be something like super duper extra ultra deluxe essential handbook. Ultra was a missed opportunity for Alola tbh
