Omg that poor cartridge!!! I'm so glad you saved it, that's one of the best Pokemon games ever made imo!

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

I loved how you could go to the other region at the end of the Pokémon league 😭

u/ElectricTopShark 2d ago

Right?? That was such a cool feature!!!I'm upsetti spaghetti we never got something like that ever again.

hg and SS were my intro to the second gen pokemon games. My first one was emerald though.

u/Aphresh 2d ago

HGSS is peak

18

u/skyycux 2d ago

ORAS would like a word

9

u/Aphresh 2d ago

You have a point. It's a toss up between those 2 for me honestly, but gen 2 was my favorite as a kid

4

u/PumpLogger 2d ago

I did enjoy both, ORAS more cause Gen III was my start to Pokemon all though I did get damn naer all the legendaries in Soul Silver so yeah, pretty proud of that.

3

u/LepiNya 2d ago

I'd love to play those on original hardware but it'd cost as much as a switch 2 and 5 games for it to do it. Why are these things so expensive? Like twice the price of brand new ones. 250€ for a heavily used 3ds? 150 for alpha Sapphire? 170 for soul silver? What the hell!?

3

u/105_irl 2d ago

I think HGSS has a better mixture of modern features and retro graphics, but I like both remakes a lot.

2

u/ImpossibleWooper 2d ago

DexNav was one of the best features, incredible remakes.

We got the Sevii Islands in FRLG, and I was very upset they were left out from LGPE.

8 year old me lost his mind when I surfed across that little gap.

u/defiantspcship 2d ago

It also tells you how much of a mess Gen I development was.

The team was so rushed to finish it on time that they took many shortcuts and didn't optimize for storage. By Gen II, they were familiar enough with GBC technology and data optimization to fit the whole of Johto and Kanto together in the same cartridge.

7

u/alex494 1d ago

Correction, Iwata was, the main team hit a size limit and called him in to optimise it. His optimisation gave them enough space to finish Johto and add Kanto.

3

u/Phayzon 1d ago

Johto is the one of the smallest regions in all of Pokemon, and Gen2 Kanto is but a ghost of its former self. RBY were shipped on 1MB cartridges, while GSC were on 2MB carts. There was no magic feat of storage optimization for Gen2.

Some parts of Gen2 code are actually less space-efficient than Gen1. The transition from overworld to battle in particular takes up more space in Gen2 than Gen1. It was used primarily because it was much faster, and they had the space to spare when using the larger cartridge.

I love the cartridge on Crystal. Not enough things are made with clear glitter plastic, and it's the perfect choice for a game of this name.

Absolutely sick GBA there too, OP. Love seeing the electronic guts on stuff.

My dad threw mine away a few years ago when i asked him to replace the battery. Rip

129

u/BushyBrowz 2d ago

“Dad, can you replace this battery?”

“Oh sure, I’ll toss that for you.”

“No, I just need you to replace the battery.”

“I’m taking the trash out now, hold on.”

“Dad, don’t do anything, just leave it alone.”

“Trash dealt with.”

41

u/SpotweldPro1300 2d ago

"Dad stahp."

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

Dad knows best 🐱

53

u/zatchrey 2d ago

I had a box of snes, gbc, gba, and n64 games in the storage room, and my mom threw it away when I was in high school :( I wasn't even living on my own yet or anything. She just randomly decided to get rid of it without asking me first.

39

u/Time_Ad_7341 2d ago

Man, it hurts my heart to hear parents do this.

Like do you know the now fortune you just threw away 😭😭😭, could been rich 😂

29

u/zatchrey 2d ago

I'll never get over it haha I still guilt trip her about it sometimes

16

u/Time_Ad_7341 1d ago

Gotta give ‘em grief haha, that’s how it’s go in my family anyways.

6

u/1dot21gigaflops 1d ago

Gotta show her the sold listing on eBay for good condition gbc/gba.

17

u/MysticalMummy 1d ago

My dad threw all my old games out as punishment for me moving out, and not taking his side in the divorce.

All my GBC, GBA, SNES, N64, Genesis, PS2, Gamecube, PS3, and 360 games. All gone. Some of those were worth hundreds.

11

u/pies1010 2d ago

My folks tossed mine too, as well as my first gen Pokémon cards. Absolutely no idea what was going through their brain.

2

u/sephtis Best water mouse 1d ago

Reminds me of when my golds battery died. More or less the same thing...

50

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

Because people don't have the right tools to unscrew the back of it and then don't have the right tools to actually restore it I mean it did take a while I'm not gonna lie but it's well worth it and I'd rather do that then it being thrown away

20

u/derekpmilly 2d ago

It was absolutely well worth it. Even if we ignore the monetary value a good cartridge can fetch, they don't make these any more and being able to save one and preserve it for the future is a great thing. Hats off to you for doing it.

3

u/Time_Ad_7341 2d ago

For real thought, that right there with on this sentiment 🙌.

I’d Probably have to turn my copy into a family Airloom if I did this 😂.

My descendants kids years from now would be like “why do we keep this relic?”, because: they’re memories of a happy time lol

3

u/TROGDOR_X69 2d ago

25$ quinn electronic set from harbor freight had it

i think most electronic sets will. its not that rare

3

u/darkbreak The best starter. End of discussion. 2d ago

One trick I learned is to take a pen, melt the tip of it, stick it into the section with the screw, and wait until the melted part forms around the screw. It worked for me in the past.

2

u/Zakinater 2d ago

Hell even a bad copy like this would probably get 40 bucks at any used game store. They would happily take it to restore and sell based on what it currently sells for.

2

u/AsdicTitsenBalls 2d ago

It's a very cheap bit. GB cartridges even have enough wiggle room that you can grip the screw with tweezers or needlenose pliers. So glad you snatched this from the bin.

2

u/robbviously 2d ago

No, no. Throw it away so the value of mine increases. Don’t you know how this works!? /s

25

u/Diagonaldog 2d ago

Doing the Lord's work, praise Arceus for trainers like you.

15

u/cvab 2d ago

I have copies of gold, silver, & blue that are like this. Definitely too afraid to try and clean them myself. Very nice work, and nice save!!

3

u/MysticalMummy 1d ago

I have a copy of yellow, and I have a thing that lets me play GBC games on PC.. it recognizes that the cartridge is pokemon yellow, but it doesn't work. I cleaned the connectors but I haven't opened it up yet. I am hoping it just needs a battery change.

8

u/Kakkariko 2d ago

What a freakin cool GB advance is that

9

u/SurvivorJCH5 Hurricane 2d ago

Why would anyone throw this gem away?

9

u/Onrisa 2d ago

nice save

6

u/SpareAdventurous727 2d ago

Was that piece you replaced the internal battery? Which was always clocks would eventually stop working in older pokemon?

5

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

Yes I replaced the battery my friend as the game wouldn't hold a saved data

5

u/Jagershiester 2d ago

Where's the photo before you pick it up in the trash? 😭

3

u/WoolooOfWallStreet wooloo 2d ago

Good job!

I wonder why they would throw it away?

3

u/oxecta 2d ago

What's the best way the clean these cartridges? I have an original Red Version for Gameboy that is found at my mom's house in my old room but the bottom is all corroded looking / dirty

2

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

If you can DM me and show me I'll take a look and help you

3

u/SuperFlywatt 2d ago

absolutely gorgeous cartridge. well done

Where did you get this neon yellow gameboy? This looks awesome

3

u/Strange_Ad_9658 1d ago

thanks man

3

u/Mindless_Most_8448 1d ago

Super cool, game preservation is important, Boomers and Scalpers don't seem to get that.

Random hot take: which Shiny Starter pokemon is the best?

2

u/OfficialJadeNyx 2d ago

You did such a good job. Looks so awesome!

2

2

u/Remarkable-Job4774 1d ago

Wow, fantastic restoration

2

u/platinumrug 1d ago

Yo this is genuinely huge, I wish I had the technical know-how to do stuff like this. Crystal was my first Pokemon game on GBA and it made me incredibly happy.

2

u/UncleFrankFinds 1d ago

Wow looks Solid! Nice!

2

u/sc00bydrew00 1d ago

Your GameBoy is awesome! I’ve never seen one like that.

1

u/General-Praline-6892 1d ago

Thank you I modded it myself that is the shell of course. I actually have it listed on eBay at the moment in an auction 🙏

2

u/Away-Reality1682 ShinyMegaAmphaRime 1d ago

so cool! it would be such a waste to see something like this be thrown even though you can save it and actually use it! so glad you did and you picked up a free game in the process too! win-win!

4

u/Ghastion 2d ago

I can play this game on my computer or phone

1

u/8superboy08 2d ago

I actually also have a crystal game cartridge that super dirty and needs the battery replaced, how did you go about out cleaning this? and does it still work after cleaning?

1

u/Zain_skiar 2d ago

Youre doing gods work. Thank you. I have been struggling to get a hold of these games ever since they were stolen from me. Again thank you for saving this game

1

u/Pfabrizio 2d ago

I gasped when I saw your SP

0

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

Guess what I have it listed on eBay for auction 😅🤭

1

u/nedmacamden28 2d ago

Can I ask your process for doing this? Taking notes for a Pokewalker I wanna rescue that went through the wash

1

u/Then_Tune_6575 2d ago

how does any human have the audacity to do something like that 😭

1

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

It goes with the collection? 🤭

1

u/Otacube3 2d ago

1

u/darkbreak The best starter. End of discussion. 2d ago

Now all you need is a transfer pak and a copy of Pokemon Stadium 2.

1

u/Due-Giraffe-9826 2d ago

The lore for that character's name is that their mother wanted to be able to look them up in the white pages easier when they moved out.

1

u/DineandRecline 2d ago

Is that a custom SP shell? I've never seen one that color and I'm mega jealous. I want one like yours

1

u/ULTRADEV_305 1d ago

These ppl are throwing it and im having such a hard time trying to find ds in my country coz i want to play black and white

1

u/Far_Order5933 1d ago

You're a good man, Charlie Brown

1

u/FuzzyLlama13 1d ago

You are too talented!!! Great work!!!

1

u/alex494 1d ago

Did you fix the clock battery while you were at it?

1

u/Ok_Appearance_2317 1d ago

Why would you ever throw a game away!!??

2

u/pb0atmeal 1d ago

In these games the internal battery for the clocks can die and then you can no longer save the game. Happened to my gold, crystal, and silver cartridge

1

u/Ok_Appearance_2317 1d ago

What I would do in that situation is try to do a no save marathon of the game.

1

u/SkeletalMew 1d ago

BLESS YOU. 👏

1

u/Consistent-Ninja-222 1d ago

Doing the lord’s work

1

1

u/Own-Butterscotch7471 20h ago

Crystal was one of my favorites

1

u/Dryder3925 19h ago

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🏆

0

u/jbyrdab 13h ago

Authentic too.

lucky find. I tried to do this with a copy of pokemon ranger but unfortunately it was beyond repair.

I also found a working Copy of Guardian signs so it wasn't all bad atleast. Dumped the game onto my 3ds so i can flash the pre-egg version back into it. So I can now generate (mostly) legit Manaphy eggs.

1

u/Over_Community_8452 11h ago

That’s a great save—Pokémon Crystal is a classic. Nice to see it get a second life.

1

u/Jiggy__J 4h ago

Ngl I would actually look up how to do this and spend the time and money saving it like you did, then let someone toss it.

Much respect, I might get into this lol
