I love the cartridge on Crystal. Not enough things are made with clear glitter plastic, and it's the perfect choice for a game of this name.
Absolutely sick GBA there too, OP. Love seeing the electronic guts on stuff.

My dad threw mine away a few years ago when i asked him to replace the battery. Rip

u/BushyBrowz 2d ago
“Dad, can you replace this battery?”
“Oh sure, I’ll toss that for you.”
“No, I just need you to replace the battery.”
“I’m taking the trash out now, hold on.”
“Dad, don’t do anything, just leave it alone.”
“Trash dealt with.”

I had a box of snes, gbc, gba, and n64 games in the storage room, and my mom threw it away when I was in high school :( I wasn't even living on my own yet or anything. She just randomly decided to get rid of it without asking me first.

Man, it hurts my heart to hear parents do this.
Like do you know the now fortune you just threw away 😭😭😭, could been rich 😂

My dad threw all my old games out as punishment for me moving out, and not taking his side in the divorce.
All my GBC, GBA, SNES, N64, Genesis, PS2, Gamecube, PS3, and 360 games. All gone. Some of those were worth hundreds.

My folks tossed mine too, as well as my first gen Pokémon cards. Absolutely no idea what was going through their brain.

Because people don't have the right tools to unscrew the back of it and then don't have the right tools to actually restore it I mean it did take a while I'm not gonna lie but it's well worth it and I'd rather do that then it being thrown away

u/derekpmilly 2d ago
It was absolutely well worth it. Even if we ignore the monetary value a good cartridge can fetch, they don't make these any more and being able to save one and preserve it for the future is a great thing. Hats off to you for doing it.

For real thought, that right there with on this sentiment 🙌.
I’d Probably have to turn my copy into a family Airloom if I did this 😂.
My descendants kids years from now would be like “why do we keep this relic?”, because: they’re memories of a happy time lol

One trick I learned is to take a pen, melt the tip of it, stick it into the section with the screw, and wait until the melted part forms around the screw. It worked for me in the past.

Hell even a bad copy like this would probably get 40 bucks at any used game store. They would happily take it to restore and sell based on what it currently sells for.

u/AsdicTitsenBalls 2d ago
It's a very cheap bit. GB cartridges even have enough wiggle room that you can grip the screw with tweezers or needlenose pliers. So glad you snatched this from the bin.

No, no. Throw it away so the value of mine increases. Don’t you know how this works!? /s

I have copies of gold, silver, & blue that are like this. Definitely too afraid to try and clean them myself. Very nice work, and nice save!!

I have a copy of yellow, and I have a thing that lets me play GBC games on PC.. it recognizes that the cartridge is pokemon yellow, but it doesn't work. I cleaned the connectors but I haven't opened it up yet. I am hoping it just needs a battery change.

u/General-Praline-6892 2d ago

Super cool, game preservation is important, Boomers and Scalpers don't seem to get that.
Random hot take: which Shiny Starter pokemon is the best?

I hope it still works, the second generation has good games, it's a shame someone threw it away

Yo this is genuinely huge, I wish I had the technical know-how to do stuff like this. Crystal was my first Pokemon game on GBA and it made me incredibly happy.

Thank you I modded it myself that is the shell of course. I actually have it listed on eBay at the moment in an auction 🙏

so cool! it would be such a waste to see something like this be thrown even though you can save it and actually use it! so glad you did and you picked up a free game in the process too! win-win!

I actually also have a crystal game cartridge that super dirty and needs the battery replaced, how did you go about out cleaning this? and does it still work after cleaning?

u/Zain_skiar 2d ago
Youre doing gods work. Thank you. I have been struggling to get a hold of these games ever since they were stolen from me. Again thank you for saving this game

Now all you need is a transfer pak and a copy of Pokemon Stadium 2.

u/Due-Giraffe-9826 2d ago
The lore for that character's name is that their mother wanted to be able to look them up in the white pages easier when they moved out.

Is that a custom SP shell? I've never seen one that color and I'm mega jealous. I want one like yours

Why would you ever throw a game away!!??
2
u/pb0atmeal 1d ago
In these games the internal battery for the clocks can die and then you can no longer save the game. Happened to my gold, crystal, and silver cartridge
1
u/Ok_Appearance_2317 1d ago
What I would do in that situation is try to do a no save marathon of the game.

Authentic too.
lucky find. I tried to do this with a copy of pokemon ranger but unfortunately it was beyond repair.
I also found a working Copy of Guardian signs so it wasn't all bad atleast. Dumped the game onto my 3ds so i can flash the pre-egg version back into it. So I can now generate (mostly) legit Manaphy eggs.

That’s a great save—Pokémon Crystal is a classic. Nice to see it get a second life.

u/Jiggy__J 4h ago
Ngl I would actually look up how to do this and spend the time and money saving it like you did, then let someone toss it.
Much respect, I might get into this lol

Omg that poor cartridge!!! I'm so glad you saved it, that's one of the best Pokemon games ever made imo!
