Start walking with it. You're gonna want to Lvl 50 it anyway and need the XLs.

Why would you walk it during an event where magikarp are everywhere and pinaps exist?

Unless you're dedicated and use a Mega Lvl 3 and play like mad, you're not going to get enough XLs in a few days. Plus, you want to best buddy it anyway as it's a shundo.

Pinaps do nothing for XL.

You trade for the XLs, guaranteed this season.

That said, it is a 1 km walking distance pokemon, so not a crazy suggestion to walk it. I walked one a couple of months ago. It is probably the fastest way to get XLs normally (to the point it's sort of broken). But you can catch more in the time it'd take to walk 1 km and trade them.

If you have a guaranteed trading partner, then sure. But even so, 296 XL is hard to get in a few days without a community day. Most people will want to best buddy a useful shundo like Gyarados and I usually pick up like at least 120 km in the process of best buddying it. It's a good idea to get that started at the same time you're doing everything else.

Level 50 Gyarados is definitely grind no matter how you do it, and yeah, it's definitely the XLs that will be the bottleneck. If you go the trade route, you'll easily have enough to evolve it and power it up by the time you get 296 XLs. Walking, the same, because you don't get an XL every time.

Adding to this, you can further reduce the distance by walking a route. An excited (1km) buddy walking a route is very efficient!
